Taking light bulbs from old house to new house

EasterBun2001 · 05/01/2020 09:46

When we bought our first home we invested in LED lightbulbs throughout which are not cheap but have paid for themselves in ridiculously low energy bills.

Now looking at moving, my sensible head wants to bring the bulbs with me but I feel like this would be unreasonable for anyone moving in.

What would you do?

When we left our house we left paint, tiles, bottle of wine, bunch of flowers and a list of local doctors, dentists, restaurants etc. Be kind. Karma's a bitch.

LesLavandes · 05/01/2020 10:14

Just leave the bulbs. When you move, the bulbs will be last thing on your mind. I think your thoughts are mean

When we bought our first house expensive bulbs were not heard of but that didn’t stop the previous owners from removing everyone from the house so we had to go out and buy more before dark. We were a young couple with a baby. How mean can you be? When we left the house we left good carpets, all light fittings and took nothing that was not furniture. By all means replace the led lights - so long as you leave proper bulbs.

zoobincan · 05/01/2020 10:20

I have some Philips Hue bulbs and some Plumen bulbs. Google Plumen bulbs and see how expensive they are

Nobody cares. More fool you though. Seriously.

Menora · 05/01/2020 10:22

No one is saying leave a £20 bulb, but replace with a £2.99 one!

IrmaFayLear · 05/01/2020 10:23

Our predecessors did the same. And they had yanked at the bulbs so some of the electric wires were pulled out of the ceiling and were exposed Angry

ToEarlyForDecorations · 05/01/2020 10:23

We rented a house and the light bulb did not work in the bathroom. The estate agent was adamant it was not their problem.

We ended up replacing the odd, circular bulb. Which cost £15 I might add. For a light bulb. Yep. (Which we could only find in Makro which has since ceased trading.)

So, when we moved out did we take the £15 light bulb ? Hell yes. We put the non-functioning bulb back in as an up yours to the letting agent. (We had to re-arrange the house back to looking like a show home with its' random meaningless vases and ornaments before vacating, but that's unrelated.)

Where we are renting now I purchased some light bulbs to put in the empty sockets. I can't believe the cost of light bulbs these days. I went to a, 'trade counter' that serves the public to get a better deal on lightbulbs.

Will we take the random light bulbs with us when we vacate ? Oh, probably then the next person can have the annoyance that we had about one in three lightbulbs in a fitting being missing.

FlamingoAndJohn · 05/01/2020 10:23

Aren't they those naff colour changing ones Flamingo? I would WANT those gone tbf

Not all of them. But thanks for calling my home decor choices naff. Hmm

OneStepSideways · 05/01/2020 10:24

Just replace them with the original bulbs if you have them, or buy some very cheap bulbs.

It’s horrible to leave no bulbs at all, moving into a new house with no light is infuriating! They can always buy their own led low energy bulbs later if they want to.

FlamingoAndJohn · 05/01/2020 10:25

Nobody cares. More fool you though. Seriously.

Well they do care in this thread as it’s the entire point.
And people can spend their money on what they want. Nice bulbs make a difference.

Gemma2019 · 05/01/2020 10:25

Ah just leave the bulbs and just buy new ones at your new house. They never last as long when you move them, that's if they even survive the move. Also I'd feel sorry for the poor sods who bought your house with its high EPC rating, only to find that it was just for show!

I have just bought a VERY EXPENSIVE apartment for the full asking price which included some items of furniture which the previous owner was not taking to her new retirement home. Her daughters took all the lightbulbs. They weren't even the expensive LED kind - they were basic 40watt bayonet bulbs! Had to move in in the dark!

Whatelsecouldibecalled · 05/01/2020 10:29

Please leave cheap ones at least. When we bought one of our houses completion was delayed due to the people we were buying off solicitors cocking up. We didn’t get the keys until 6.30pm. It was the 6th jan pitch black, cold and chucking it down. Finally got the keys to be let in and the previous guys had taken every single fucking light bulb in the house. Not a single light could be turned on. I was so tired and stressed at this point I sat on a cold dark kitchen floor and cried. We were moving ourselves and had a van load of stuff but lucky my sensible husband just said let’s lock the door go to your mothers and we will deal with it tomorrow. I was so angry at the time it ruined what should have been an exciting day. Remember you must leave whatever is on your fixtures and fitting list too. (Our guy didn’t but that’s a whole other story!!)

zoobincan · 05/01/2020 10:29

The point is whether to take bulbs or not, random stealth boasts 'google and see how expensive my bulbs are' not needed!

And people can spend their money on what they want. Nice bulbs make a difference.

No need to jump on a thread and tell people to google how expensive they are though!

candycane22 · 05/01/2020 10:30

Remember they probably aren't going to have internet for a few weeks to order any if they are special bulbs.

PlumsGalore · 05/01/2020 10:30

I thought you were being ridiculous at first but I get these are expensive, I would buy a load of. Heap
Bulbs from B&M and leave those and take your led ones

SerenDippitty · 05/01/2020 10:30

The previous owners of our house took all the carpets except the hall stairs and landing, they didn’t need that as they were moving to a bungalow. They also took the hooks the curtain tie backs had been on - perfectly ordinary non ornate hooks.

CakeandCustard28 · 05/01/2020 10:31

I moved into my rented house that had no light bulbs because of the old tenants. We moved in the dark and had to walk around with one lamp until we got some the next day... don’t be that person OP! Just replace with cheaper ones.

maddening · 05/01/2020 10:31

Replace. With cheap bulbs at least

zoobincan · 05/01/2020 10:32

Remember they probably aren't going to have internet for a few weeks to order any if they are special bulbs.

Internet access has come a long way. Most people can use their phones to order lightbulbs!

80skid · 05/01/2020 10:34

Leave them, sign up with utility warehouse in new house, get new LED ones for free

chipsandgin · 05/01/2020 10:36

I moved into a flat where the sellers had taken the fire grate (specific to the Victorian fireplace it belonged to!), lightbulbs, toilet seats, fitted mirrors, the TV aerial socket & all the curtain rails! Thankfully we had a brilliant and detailed fixtures and fittings inventory agreed (which all of the above were on apart from the lightbulbs, which is just down to common decency!) and a pitbullesque solicitor so it was sorted within hours, but what the actual fuck - we’d just paid thousands to these people!? Just rude! Also check your fixtures & fittings inventory..

SimonJT · 05/01/2020 10:37

I bought my flat in April/May, the previous owner took all of the lightbulbs. It wasn’t until it was getting a bit dark that I realised. I had to drag a very tired three year old on a forty minute journey to buy lightbulbs.

I shouldn’t have been surprised, they also took the radiator from the living room!
