Taking light bulbs from old house to new house

EasterBun2001 · 05/01/2020 09:46

When we bought our first home we invested in LED lightbulbs throughout which are not cheap but have paid for themselves in ridiculously low energy bills.

Now looking at moving, my sensible head wants to bring the bulbs with me but I feel like this would be unreasonable for anyone moving in.

What would you do?

I took them once in a rental because half of them didn't work when we moved in! But buying is different I think put cheap bulbs in at least

MarthasGinYard · 05/01/2020 09:56

Blimey you weren't even going to replace them Shock

You'd have found a thread about yourself from the new owner ....

"What kind of tight CF takes the light bulbs"

SusanneLinder · 05/01/2020 09:56

Leave the bulbs, or replace with cheap ones, but I still think its pretty mean!

Palaver1 · 05/01/2020 09:56

Buy cheap ones to replace

orchidsarebeautiful · 05/01/2020 09:57

We have very expensive Alexa controlled bulbs.
I would be removing every single bulb in the house.

But, I would replace every bulb I removed with a fully functional less expensive replacement.

It's a non issue really.

I'd probably state it on the fixtures and fitting form to be honest, I'd say that every room would have functioning lights and leave it at that.

Chocolatemouse84 · 05/01/2020 09:57

I'm now very grateful to the people we bought our house off. They left loads of left over paint and tiles in the garage and a drawer full of all the different light bulbs in the house.
We moved from renting but I would have made sure there was working bulbs just in case they hadn't thought to pack any.

Piccalillies · 05/01/2020 09:57

Poundland and various other shops sell LED light bulbs for £1.

FiveShelties · 05/01/2020 09:58

I still tell the story about the mean woman who we bought a house from who removed the light bulbs. We did not realise until it was going dark and then had to go to the supermarket on Friday evening to buy bulbs, just what we needed. It was 30 years ago and it still annoys me!

I am amazed that anyone would do this. It is beyond tight.

ohprettybaby · 05/01/2020 09:58

I'd leave the bulbs because I'm a decent person. You don't showcase your home with the light from LED bulbs and then, once someone's bought it, change them for cheap bulbs. Not unless you're an unpleasant person.

Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

Leave the bulbs! If you do take them though you do need to leave some lightbulbs in their place. You definitely can't just leave no light bulbs for them on the day they move in!

PitterPatterOfBigFeet · 05/01/2020 10:01

The people we bought our house took quite a few of the bloody door knobs which was a right pain. I think they were special ornate ones but they could have at least replaced them with basic ones as we couldn't open quite a few of the cupboards until we'd gone out and bought some which was a right pain when you're trying to move in.

NotOnMyWatchSunshine · 05/01/2020 10:01

@PawPatrolMakesMeDrink FADGE!!! Oh my goodness me I've not heard that in so long. Thank you. Thank you. 😂😂😂

FlamingoAndJohn · 05/01/2020 10:01

I understand op.
I have Philips Hue lightbulbs in some of my rooms. Like fuck would I leave them.
I’d replace with cheap ones though.

This isn’t 59p 60w jobs we are talking about here.

emilybrontescorsett · 05/01/2020 10:02

Yes I'm sure there is a legal requirement that your house must have some lighting.
Replace all the bulbs with cheap ones.
When I bought my first home, the owner even took the hook from the fence which held the washing line on.
Don't be that person.

armitasp · 05/01/2020 10:02

Take your bulbs and leave some cheap CFLs. Simples

Take them and replace with cheap standard ones

MsVestibule · 05/01/2020 10:03

I bought a house 30 years ago and when I moved in, I found a used bulb on the mantelpiece and no bulb in the main light fitting - it must have blown the day they moved out, but they left it there so I didn't think of them as the stingy fuckers who took a lightbulb with them!

Just replace them with cheap bulbs.

Jumpingforgin · 05/01/2020 10:04

You have to leave lightbulbs (by law one per floor) and just as human decency one per room, but nothing wrong with taking the expensive ones and replacing with standard bulbs. We did this as had bought lots of fancy filament ones, squirrel cages, corkscrews etc, so took them out and put standard ones in when we left. What annoyed me was our sellers told us they were leaving the light fittings in the house (nice copper shades) so we left ours for our buyers, moved in here and they were gone! Questioned it with the estate agents and solicitors who contacted them and they said they thought that fittings meant the bulbs 🤦🏻‍♀️... We were told we could open up a legal case, but it wouldn't be worth it, it was a genuine mistake on their part, just bloody annoying as meant we'd left our nice fittings at the old house, and then couldn't afford to replace with the same, so had to get cheap ones.

Squigean · 05/01/2020 10:04

In the scheme of things, are they really that expensive?

When selling a house it does seem chronically tight fisted consider removing light bulbs you've had use out of years.

Melroses · 05/01/2020 10:06

Led bulbs are now a lot cheaper than they were too

^^
This

Taking light bulbs is really skanky. LEDs are really cheap from Home Bargains and much better than the old ones. I have 100W bayonet equivalent ones that are actually brighter than the old sort and cost either £2.99 or £3.99 - can't remember.

I looked around a house in pre-energy saving bulb days and it had no lights at all!!! It was a dull day. After looking around, we realised there were lots of little two pin sockets which the estate agent thought must be part of a lighting system that worked from the light switch. They had taken every light/lamp Confused. It was a small 4 bed on at the price of a larger one. I hope someone knocked the price down - we didn't bother.

armitasp · 05/01/2020 10:07

some people on here saying it is mean perhaps don't realize some bulbs aren't cheap. I have some Philips Hue bulbs and some Plumen bulbs. Google Plumen bulbs and see how expensive they are. I would take them with me and replace them with some standard CFLs if I moved house.

minniemoll · 05/01/2020 10:09

I'd take any smart bulbs and replace them with pound shop or Ikea LEDs, but leave the rest - you might find that when you get to your new place you need different bulbs anyway, there's so many different types out there these days.

Melroses · 05/01/2020 10:10

When I bought my first home, the owner even took the hook from the fence which held the washing line on.
