My sister in law is having a very fancy black tie wedding in April. Obviously I want to wear something nice, we’re not well off so I can’t spend too much but I can afford a new frock.

However here’s the thing. Not only am I overweight (size 18/20) but I’m constantly on the go with my son who has ADHD and SPD. I need to be able to run, bend down multiple times without flashing, pick up and carry an 8 year old and be climbed on. All while looking nice and retaining some modesty. Help! Does such an outfit exist? Last time I went to a family wedding I looked awful in a mismatched outfit I had thrown together and I tore my pretty dress chasing my whirlwind who was a toddler at the time. Shall I just accept defeat and wear leggings and a jumper as usual?

Asos curve has a load of nice midi dresses for a reasonable price. What kind of stuff do you like?

Crunchymum · 05/01/2020 09:45

You have a bit if time, can you start trawling Ebay?

It's also a good time of year for sales?

HeddaGarbled · 05/01/2020 09:46

Smart trousers and top?

AnchorDownDeepBreath · 05/01/2020 09:46

I don't think you can do jumpers and leggings, you'll feel really out of place.

Would you prefer trousers? A jumpsuit could work? Or a midi dress, so you aren't at risk of flashing but can still move around?

Lipsy had some lovely high neck Grecian style dresses before Christmas, if you like that type of thing. They seemed easy to move in.

I hope you find something that works and you feel confident in Thanks

Definitely ASOS curve. They have gorgeous midi and long length dresses and are cut really well

Suchawitch · 05/01/2020 09:47

Look at www.yoursclothing.co.uk/. I'm the same size as you and I have bought a lot of things there. They are designed for larger ladies and have room for movement. They are also reasonably priced and have a discount for your first online order. There are also shops if you want to take a look and try the clothes on. They have all kinds of styles.

I spent years feeling uncomfortable in badly fitting Next and Per Una clothes until I gave up pretending I wasn't overweight discovered this shop.

A jumpsuit? There are some nice 'eveningwear' ones about now.

Ohhgreat · 05/01/2020 09:48

Have known lots of people wear jumpsuits to weddings, they are definitely formal enough, makes running and bending much easier!

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 05/01/2020 09:50

Jumpsuits don’t work for me, just don’t shut my shake at all and then I get all twisted and uncomfortable.
I look nice in dresses, 50s style or skater style. Big boobs, big bum and chunky thighs (muscular from carrying my fat self and my strong heavy 8 year old)

Boohoo are quite good but be careful as some stuff isnt quite as pictured, still lovely but not the quality of more expensive shops

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 05/01/2020 09:53

Have to watch the length too as I have to wear flats (back injury in my early 20s plus running after DS)

Thejollyroger nice dress but I’m not sure it would look good with flats Hmm

Google 'pretty kitty' Lots of lovely dresses on there in 50's styles

IlsSortLaPlupartAuNuitMostly · 05/01/2020 09:54

The rise of “modest dressing” aka the Zara tent, means that there should be a decent number of loose midi dresses available in which you won’t look out of place.

Inhismemory · 05/01/2020 09:55

Can you get a babysitter so you can enjoy the day or can your DH do the running around that day if you do it all the time. You deserve a day off.

thejollyroger · 05/01/2020 09:56

No, with flats you want a maxi dress, really.

bridgetreilly · 05/01/2020 09:57

Nice silky jersey wrap dress.

Ohhgreat · 05/01/2020 09:58

Have a look at Studio 8 at John Lewis. Lots of wedding guest suitable dresses, reduced in the sale at the moment too.

I've been looking at this one recently. I don't wear heels by choice and have a similar one that looks fine with flats. They do different colours

randomsabreuse · 05/01/2020 10:00

Have a look at Lindybop maybe. Skater/Swing dresses, decent length and the fabrics on the two I have feel pretty robust (cotton and satin)

ACupOfTeaSolvesEverything · 05/01/2020 10:00

Ok wrap dresses are a no as they invariably get pulled open when picking up DS.

Maxi dress and flats is my go to fancy outfit. But since having DS I find I trip on the dress with all the bending and moving. Midi dress and flats isn’t flattering on me, knee length ish is ok.

New look do a good plus size range, loads of Midi dresses, with full skirts for under £30.

PsychosonicCindy · 05/01/2020 10:01

Look up lindy bop dresses on eBay they are fifties style fall below the knee they're so comfortable and flattering. I'm an 18 I wore one to the last wedding I went to it looked great in the photos even! And I wore flats with it (they were platformy flats though)
