To take my handbag to bed?

hellcarryingahandbag · 04/01/2020 23:48

Hi all,
I have always put everything I will need or want in my handbag, and taken it to bed, or the room I’m going to sit in. I am not in good health, so I like to have everything with me. The thing is that I put things in my bag that I want to put in a different room, or that I want to have handy, I don’t go out with the cordless landline in my handbag or anything Grin. My grandmother has always done the same thing, and my mother thinks it’s lunacy. I am never without my handbag, as I feel better knowing everything I need is easily accessible. Are my grandmother and I right or is my mother?

Mine is in the cupboard under the stairs.
I was advised once that if someone was looking for houses to rob, they'd be more inclined to go for ones with handbags by the door, but that your bag should be somewhere a burglar would look if they did break in so they would be less likely to come upstairs and hurt me or my family.
My phone however is never not in my pocket or my hand.

do you not need your wallet for online shopping

  • I use PayPal

An attached garage was my #1 wishlist item when I bought this house. No more taking groceries in in the rain, no more scraping ice and snow off the car, getting cold or soaked getting in and out of the car. I love it.

bettybattenburg · 05/01/2020 00:53

I have a heavy lamp beside my bed and if an intruder came into my room, they would fall foul of the lamp...

If you were awake.

My bag and keys are on a table in the hall, they'd be welcome to it. My phone goes on the bedside table in case my dcs phone.

hellcarryingahandbag · 05/01/2020 00:54

@bettybattenburg I am a light sleeper...

Your Majesty < curtsies >

You always have your handbag with you on the telly, even when making Christmas pud,
so I'm not surprised you take it to bed too

steff13 · 05/01/2020 00:57

even when making Christmas pud

I saw the picture of her making cookies with her purse. I'm guessing the Queen's purse is not covered in germs like most women's purses. 🤢

hellcarryingahandbag · 05/01/2020 00:59

@BigChocFrenzy one can’t be without one’s handbag!

@hellcarryingahandbag you're the most organised person I've ever spoken to in my life Grin

HepzibahGreen · 05/01/2020 01:07

I suppose you could always leave a decoy handbag downstairs near the door with old set of keys, an old purse and cards, old glasses and whatever else people normally have in their bags. Then keep the real stuff in your room.
I literally do this!Blush
There's an old handbag on the hook by the door with an odd wallet and keys in. It's sort of subconscious now but years ago there was a spate of break ins at night in my street and I started doing it then.
My actual hand bag stays by me at all times, with keys, cards, cash, small make up bag, glasses, tissues spare pants..Grin
Of course it does! I'm a lady.

Hoik · 05/01/2020 01:08

Ah see, mine can't be seen. The windows next to the door are heavily frosted and the letterbox is locked at night so there's no peeking through it.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 05/01/2020 01:08

@HepzibahGreen a lot of break ins these days are for cars. Leave your car keys downstairs even if you take everything else upstairs.

It's not worth the battle.

hellcarryingahandbag · 05/01/2020 01:09

@GiveHerHellFromUs I’m really notGrin by the way, I love your username!

My Mum nursed in a geriatric Ward in the 1960’s and said it was stressed to new nurses that they absolutely must place female patients’ handbags back beside them on the bed as soon as the sheets were changed, otherwise the patients would become extremely anxious.

HappyHarlot · 05/01/2020 01:12

Do none of you have a bedside table? That’s for pens, books, tissues, hand cream, chargers etc

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 05/01/2020 01:13

I've always taken my handbag to my bedroom and never thought it might be weird until now. Not aware of anyone else in my family that does this so not sure why I do.
Might be that because I get up for work at 5am and don't spend any time downstairs (other than to feed the cat) before setting off for work, it's easier for me to put my phone etc in there just as I'm preparing to leave.

BigChocFrenzy · 05/01/2020 01:13

"a lot of break ins these days are for cars. Leave your car keys downstairs even if you take everything else upstairs."

Well, I'm in trouble if a burglar comes:
no car, but I live in an upmarket serviced flat - I'm visually disabled

Oh well, I live in a v low crime area, right on the bank of the Rhine, so they may prefer boats anyway

TotHappy · 05/01/2020 01:14

Ha, I inadvertently have three of these decoys hanging on the coat hooks in my front room - I move from bag to bag without emptying the old ones so any of the four bags hanging there could be the current one, with the 'true' cards and keys... Who would know?? I didn't realise I was so cunning.

schoolcats · 05/01/2020 01:15

My bag is in the hall but to get it they'd have to have x ray vision be break down two doors so I guess it's safe

That sounds lovely. I live in a low crime area as well; we've lived here since 2007 and there's never been a break-in in our subdivision.

Leave your boat keys by the door Wink

LimitIsUp · 05/01/2020 01:24

I do this too - that why my door keys and car key is to hand if I need to exit the house quickly in an emergency

hellcarryingahandbag · 05/01/2020 01:25

@HappyHarlot I do, but it’s a small chest of drawers, and it has a lamp and my amazon echo dot.
@TheKrakening3 I get anxious without my bag...

Do you live alone? I have Dc so I would rather they could get out without me in the event of a fire. Like If I was unconscious or something. So key stays by the door.

Walkon · 05/01/2020 01:33

I do the same! I am asthmatic so it has my inhalers , also lip balm, my glasses ,my diary, phone... All these things I used multiple times a day so always have my bag beside me.
