To think you can’t have two good sleepers?

Expecting my second baby. First has been a brilliant sleeper. Have this sense of dread that the second will be a different story but also hoping there’s some chance I could get lucky again! Anyone had two good sleepers?

3 good sleepers here. So much so we don’t know how to deal with them if they wake in the night.

Mrsmummy90 · 04/01/2020 23:12

2dcs 17mo apart. Both fab sleepers!

ForestYeti · 04/01/2020 23:13

My first 3 were great sleepers, not so lucky with number 4

TheDarkPassenger · 04/01/2020 23:15

I had two shit sleepers, does that count? 🤣

TheDarkPassenger · 04/01/2020 23:16

FWIW I’m also a really shit sleeper, and was as a child too according to my gleeful mother. Maybe it’s a hereditary thing. My dad barely sleeps too

Onceuponalifetime · 04/01/2020 23:17

I had bad sleepers.

But I know a lot of people who have had good sleepers. And I suspect baby sleep habits has a genetic component so if you’ve had a good sleeper you’re probably more likely to have another, just as someone who has had a poor sleeper is more likely to have another poor sleeper.

ivykaty44 · 04/01/2020 23:17

Yes, 2nd baby slept better than first 🤫

NewNameGuy · 04/01/2020 23:18

We have 2 fantastic sleepers 3 and 5

nofriendsatll · 04/01/2020 23:18

First slept through at 10 weeks, second at 9 weeks and then third at 8 weeks. Only had thirteen months gap between each of them - but the fact they were such amazing sleepers was the reason why. Very lucky, I know

JockTamsonsBairns · 04/01/2020 23:18

My first 2 were brilliant sleepers which, at the time, I put down to my amazing parenting and adherence to an evening routine. Then I had dc3, who completely wiped that theory out my head Grin

Instagrrr · 04/01/2020 23:18

I had one of each. It’s luck of the draw (personality) in my opinion. It’s great when smug parents who think they have been amazingly great get a shit sleeper though, all about balance Grin

Ineedcoffee2345 · 04/01/2020 23:19

Dd1 slept through from 9 weeks dd2 from 3 weeks old Shock nothing I did to make this happen. I think I got very lucky. Scares me thinking of having a 3rd who may not be a sleeper

Lalas1 · 04/01/2020 23:19

I've had 3 Grin

bananasandwicheseveryday · 04/01/2020 23:22

Both mine were good sleepers. Dc1 slept through (11pm - 7am) from around five weeks, as well as plenty of daytime naps. Dc2 slept through slightly earlier. Both are now adults and could still win Olympic gold for sleeping. Dgc is also a good sleeper and has been since birth.

ChipsAreLife · 04/01/2020 23:23

Mine both absolute shockers for sleep. Expecting number three and hoping for third time lucky!!

Housewife2010 · 04/01/2020 23:24

Both mine were great sleepers. My daughter slept through from 6 weeks and my son from 10 weeks. Unfortunately he decided to drop his lunchtime nap the moment he turned two.

sweetkitty · 04/01/2020 23:27

It depends what you mean by good sleeper though?

Are they good because they were sleep trained from an early age? Bad because they were never left? What’s good 10 hours, 8 hours, 5 hours?

All four of mine coslept to well past a year old, if they stirred in the night, they were quickly given a feed back to sleep. In fact I’m sure as they got older they helped themselves like a dummy and hardly woke me. For some people this would be horrendous for me it got me lost sleep. All were sleeping in their own beds by 2 in their own rooms, never trained or left to cry. All slept through baring the odd bad dream. Now the 2 teens are such great sleepers I cannot wake them up in the mornings Grin

I think what I’m trying to say is that what’s a good sleeper to one person might be a bad sleeper to another. So you shouldn’t compare. Also as a mum of 4 my advice is do what you can to get the most sleep you can, sleep deprivation is a killer and the baby/toddler years go past in a flash, survival is the key.

defineme · 04/01/2020 23:29

My 3 were tricky up to 9 months in terms of night feeding, other than that they always napped, slept through the night, never had cause to go to them unless they were I'll, could leave them with babysitters knowing they'd never wake up. However, now they're teenagers I can't get them to go to bed or wake up in the morning! It's all luck x

Onceuponalifetime · 04/01/2020 23:33

Sweet kitty your babies sound like good sleepers to me.

I co slept but they still woke and stayed awake in the night, were difficult to settle (didn’t even like to feed to sleep).

They were naturally light sleepers as well so all sorts of things woke them.

They also were alert and didn’t show tired signs as expected, I think they needed a lot less sleep than average which is quite frustrating for a parent who is looking to respond to tired cues and there are none when there should be some.

Butterfly02 · 04/01/2020 23:37

Dt were great sleepers.
Ds (also asd & health issues) was not.
However at 10,10 & 15 all are good sleepers.
I do think a lot is to do with a good routine in our case.

Scottishgirl85 · 04/01/2020 23:40

Two awesome sleepers here. Both slept 12 hours a night from 10 weeks old and never looked back since. Literally can count on one hand the number of times we've had to get up in the night since then. Ages nearly 5 and 20 months. Good luck!

Ludways · 04/01/2020 23:41

Mine were both good sleepers. They're teenagers now and it causes problems now, I wish they'd get out of bed!!

Wacadu · 04/01/2020 23:43

I had 2 great sleepers. They still love their beds and I had to wake them up on Christmas morning!

BillyAndTheSillies · 04/01/2020 23:44

Both DS's are good sleepers (although anything can change since DS2 is only 13 weeks).

I can put DS(3) to bed at 7:30 and he will often sleep until 8:30/9 on a weekend. Also never worried about "danger naps" with him. He could nap until 5:30/6 and still go to bed at 7:30.

Ds2 will go down after his 9pm feed and often wake for a feed at 3, then 6 and sleep until 9.

I'd actually say DS2 is a better sleeper in that he doesn't need rocking or shushing to sleep, just switch on some white noise at bedtime and he's asleep. During the day he will just fall asleep at bang on 10:30am and bang on 1:30pm.

I used to be in tears trying to get DS1 to nap or go to sleep. Hours of pacing, rocking, singing etc.

sweetkitty · 04/01/2020 23:44

@Onceuponalifetime I’m not saying mine weren’t good sleepers to me they were great but maybe to others having them in your bed and waking for a dream feed now and again wouldn’t be. What I mean is that everyone’s definition of a great sleeper is different.
