Friend has just revealed that when she makes a stew/curry/casserole, anything that can be put in the oven for a few hours and cook on low heat, she would do that and go out for a few hours.

I can’t imagine doing that, anything could happen. What if you got caught up, run over/injured honestly anything could happen and nobody would know you have the oven on 😳.

Nope I wouldn’t do this either. I don’t leave any appliance on.

OceanSunFish · 04/01/2020 20:54

I once got locked out of my flat and couldn't get in till the next morning. The oven was on overnight! Shock

No fire but the casserole was very burnt and the pan has never quite been the same.

rumandbiscuits · 04/01/2020 20:54

The fact you wouldn't put the oven on and go out but would the washing machine is beyond me. Washing machines are one of the most common causes of house fires not ovens! I would never leave the house with the washing machine on but would the oven (not that I really ever do but I know which is safer...)

KnightandDay · 04/01/2020 20:58

My oven has a timer, but also it automatically switches off after 4 hours. You can do a fab stew in 4 hours!

CanIGoHomeNowPlease · 04/01/2020 21:00

I have an aga - that’s super hot for most of the year and has piles of washing on it too 😬

slipperywhensparticus · 04/01/2020 21:00

I leave my oven to work when I'm in the house why shouldn't I even I'm out the house?

Cushycat · 04/01/2020 21:03

Horrifed? Grin

ZenNudist · 04/01/2020 21:04

I leave the oven on when I'm out all the time. Not the hob though, has seems different.

cubesofjelly · 04/01/2020 21:04

This is one of those threads where I feel the whole ‘MN is another world’ thing. I had no idea leaving ovens and slow cookers on was so common Blush

FWIW, I think YANBU! I don’t leave any major appliances running whilst I’m out (apart from the ones I’m supposed to, like the fridge!). I don’t like having the washing machine on when I’m not home, likewise the oven, and I don’t have a dishwasher but I wouldn’t have that on when I’m out either. I worry about fires. I have had smoke come from a washing machine before mid-cycle.

Rosebel · 04/01/2020 21:07

Have done this a few times but I do worry so tend to use the slow cooker instead, although i!I'm not sure if that's any better. I also leave the washing machine on when I go out.

cubesofjelly · 04/01/2020 21:07

...leaving them on when out of the house, obviously.

Ponoka7 · 04/01/2020 21:08

Any working woman (and plenty that didn't) would leave a casserole/stew on all day in the oven, in the 80's and earlier.

You'd put your roast in and go to church, on a Sunday.

There was more danger from your Christmas lights and chip pan.

Mind you we all had to frequently use candles the 70's, so it probably hardened us up.

ScorpionQueen · 04/01/2020 21:08

I would with my fairly new electric oven but maybe not if it was gas. Can you still get gas ovens?

NegroniOnIce · 04/01/2020 21:09

I regularly get steamrollered by large industrial farm vehicles. Makes the beef curry even more tasty. I also go out and leave the stock pot on the hob - very very low heat. That's awks if I do get flattened by an HGV but I've been lucky so far in that DH has been home to turn it off.
Too much fretting is really not good for you.

windycuntryside · 04/01/2020 21:10

Horrified ??? Really. You have quite a good life of this .... horrifies you. Yabu also.

EdersonsSmileyTattoo · 04/01/2020 21:11

I do this all the time, I leave the dishwasher, washer, dishwasher, cooker and/or slow cooker on and go out.

I never realised it was a thing to not do it! Confused

Crazymaisienumber9 · 04/01/2020 21:11

A colleagues husband is in the fire service and I asked her about this and she said he would say never never never. I remember my electric blanket went on fire while i was in the bed...smoldering. I was a young teenager at the time (in my 50s now)...pushed it over from my side of the bed as I didnt like too much heat ...my sister was due to come to bed shortly afterwards ...fortunately i woke up as something was irritating the back of my throat...the smoke...i was out of it when i went downstairs to tell my sister. It was a new electric blanket. A near miss.

FloreanFortescue · 04/01/2020 21:12

I wouldn't. Just because it only takes once. I use my slow cooker on a timer.

Bluerussian · 04/01/2020 21:15

Your friend could do with a slow cooker, it would be safe.

Ponoka7 · 04/01/2020 21:16

@ScorpionQueen, please tell me your taking the piss and you know quite well that gas ovens and agas are still very much available.

AmazingGreats · 04/01/2020 21:16

I wouldn't because I don't know how to set the timer and have a bad memory for things like that and often change my plans, so I might pop out for half an hour and end up being gone hours and forget all about it. I have ended up with a slow cooker full of burnt food on occasion.

candycane22 · 04/01/2020 21:18

I do kind of worry when I am held up at work and the slow cooker is on 13/14 hours.

MoonlightMistletoe · 04/01/2020 21:20

I couldn't do this, I thought I left the iron on once I was adamant I was going to come home to the fire brigade outside my house. It was fine I didn't even leave it on Blush

AJPTaylor · 04/01/2020 21:22

PMSL. There is risk averse and this is a whole new level

Rezie · 04/01/2020 21:27

I would never do this. Would cause me too much anxiety. But if someone else feels comfortable then why not. It's not for me.
