To report someone who has a pitbull?

IAmNotLego · 04/01/2020 19:03

They boast about it being a pitbull, in IRL and on Facebook. Told me they weren't going to have it neutered (so it would continue to grow as big as possible), but had registered it. Surely it would need to be neutered? As part of this?

They told me they have it muzzled in public.

Second conversation. They've said it attacked 2 dogs, so has now been neutered.

I've seen the dog out in public without a muzzle and off lead..

I'm sure some will tell me to mind my own business. But I'd feel awful if something happened to another dog/animal or a child and it could have been prevented.

Pit bull have what you call a lock jaw. Where they can lock their jaw on a tyre tree ball ect they will not let go like untill they want a drink.

tabulahrasa · 05/01/2020 01:32

“Ok, forgetting the semantics....would you rather be attacked by an angry rabbit or a large dog?”

Dunno, what kind of rabbit? One of those 4 foot ones could probably really do some damage tbh...

tabulahrasa · 05/01/2020 01:37

Also why am I being attacked? Because I’ve given medication to an unwilling rottie and an unwilling rabbit...

And I’d take a rottie over a rabbit for that, the rabbit drew blood.

Tinkerbell456 · 05/01/2020 01:39

Those rabbits are vicious indeed.

Thatagain · 05/01/2020 01:43

They are pit bull types. Like staffy mungruls. If you + a pedegree staffy and even a pit mungrul you get a extremely dangerous dog. Why have pit bulls got a bad name when few get to see one in England.

CustardDream · 05/01/2020 01:50

'Dog bred for fighting does more damage when it attacks someone' shocker....

Who'd have thunk it?

Lloyd8149 · 05/01/2020 02:22

You're probably a budinsky. Yiddish for someone who stocks their nose in when it's not wanted or needed. STFU and mind your own business
If the owners said that they would have a muzzle on the dog ask them why they haven't? Otherwise keep your big nose out of this. Pitbulls are very loving dogs and you probably don't know the whole story.

Tinkerbell456 · 05/01/2020 02:25

I think it’s a pity to tar a whole breed of dog with the same brush because some are aggressive. Yes, some breeds are more aggressive than others by temperament but any dog is capable of aggression. So much depends on good socialisation and training.

Steve1973 · 05/01/2020 02:28

Bull breeds are victims to there eager to please personality they are either loving family dogs or status symbols I have a 11 month old staffie and he is so loving to everyone and just wants to play. I’ve seen parents physically drag there dog out of the way of my dog just because it’s a staffie it’s embarrassing and has more than once caused there dog to snap at me or my dog, it’s all about socialisation and responsibility not particular breeds.

Jbk1 · 05/01/2020 02:59

There is no such thing as a dangerous breed just dangerous dogs. You report dangerous dogs whether they are a little poodle or a pitbull. It's all how you raise and train your dog. I had a Rottweiler who love everyone but I took the time to socialize and train him.

Sue2020 · 05/01/2020 03:55

I believe IT IS by the deed (or offense )..and not the breed ... I have raised hundreds of pits and there are different breeds of pits .. in what I’ve found it’s the way they are treated ...I’ve also had a wolf mix a chow a shitzu a chihuahua a German Shepard a Yorkie a spitz a poodle ...and I ask you which of these breeds do you think were the most lovable the most trustworthy and the most territorial or the most aggressive..... You might be surprised....and it is 99.9% the owners fault and not the breed.

Sue2020 · 05/01/2020 03:57

I agree with you JBK1 you are absolutely correct!THANK YOU

CustardDream · 05/01/2020 03:58

If you get the chance to shoot it I would not hesitate, OP. You may be saving a child's life.

Yourkidsnotimportant · 05/01/2020 04:45

So much misinformation on this thread it's sad. Pit bulls don't have lock jaws. Pit bulls aren't more aggressive than other breeds. Aggression is a behavioral response, not a breed characteristic. Some breeds have stronger prey drive than others. That doesn't mean the dog is "aggressive".

Toomanygerbils · 05/01/2020 04:54

Can we also remember that this post was made by a person that non of us knows personally. Therefore everything including Facebook posts and supposed attacks are just things that may or may not have happened. OP hasn’t come back and proved any of this. This could be real or could be something anyone could make up

This article states how cross breeds can be part of the law too. I'd report it.

Seahorseshoe · 05/01/2020 05:17

Yanbu. Ticking time bomb.

Loveablers · 05/01/2020 05:24

I can’t believe how many idiot responses there are here

ANY dog can be dangerous. You cannot and should not tarnish a whole breed. Years ago it was gsd’s and rotties and now it’s staffy’s / pitbull type dogs

I know two different Pitbulls (not mine!) and I would trust them more than any jack Russell’s I know.

Unless/until they give you reason to be cautious just keep yourself out of it.

beautifulstranger101 · 05/01/2020 05:35

Yes- report it. My lab was attacked completely unprovoked by a pitbull who grabbed her round the throat. Its a miracle she survived and it wasnt the dog's first attack. Report it now and I'd feel zero guilt.

Mummy232019 · 05/01/2020 05:40

It’s all here say. Mind your own business. Sick of people like you getting dogs killed for no reason. If it bit you or anyone else and you had proof 100% report it but you’re going off “boasts”. Some people say their dog is aggressive when it isn’t to make people think twice before breaking into their home etc... (don’t blame them given the police cuts, they don’t investigate anymore just give you a crime number for insurance) I have a staffy cross mastiff that was repeatedly reported for no reason, luckily I’m a responsible owner and he didn’t have the characteristics of a pitbull in the end. I was told by a police officer that regardless of me being responsible if he’d have had the characteristics he would’ve been put down due to the sheer amount of spiteful reports a neighbour had made.

ILearnedItFromABook · 05/01/2020 06:04

Report it, if you feel the dog is dangerous. The authorities won't act unless they agree. Seems like a no-brainer to me.

iem0128 · 05/01/2020 06:08

I would report it as it is ILLEGAL under Dangerous Dogs Act 1991. Of course, we have heard of smaller dogs attacking babies, but these pitbulls are powerful dogs.

I remember my son being chased by a family dog, not even a pitbull. The dog was let out together with the owner's children on the same route to school. This bundle of energy just chased my son, along a road with parents driving their kids to school. I was in tears and totally helpless.

In another incident, I was in Hampstead Heath, a huge dog jumped on me, didn't attack me, but that really gave me a fright. I had my period and I was sure the dog smelt that.

When my friend and I were walking in a park, another small dog pounced all over me, leaving footprints and my friend suffered from the indignity of being sniffed at the bottom. I was annoyed and the owner said, "It just wanted to say hello. Judging from your face, you want to kill it!" I asked you. We were just walkers trying to take in fresh air in the park and yet being messed about by the dog and then the owner had a go at us! We didn't say anything. Dogs out being walked should be on leash. Or at least, respond to owners' instruction.

One day, I saw a teenager being pulled by 2 huge dogs outside my house. She was dragged by the dogs! I'm not against dogs. They provide companionship to a lot of people. But once a dog has attacked animals or children, it should be put down. Once it has the taste and biting experience, there is no way of knowing what the next trigger can be!

Report it as these people are doing something illegal and usually when they do things like this, there is something dodgy about their character - show a disregard for law, and safety for others. I remember seeing photographs of policemen being mauled by big pitbulls in South London. No laughing matter!

ballsdeep · 05/01/2020 06:15

@mummy
Pitbulls are banned for a reason. They should be reported, they are dangerous dogs.

allyjay · 05/01/2020 06:38

@Yourkidisnotimportant that is an utterly disgusting thing to say. Shame on you

Some absolute nuts on this thead

APT2020 · 05/01/2020 06:41

EllebellyBeeblebrox you said in an earlier post that “ pit bulls were originally bred and raised for fighting,“. Taken from Wikipedia article. However, and this goes for anyone else with the same belief, pit bulls were ”originally”bred for fighting, they were originally bred to be used for bull or bear baiting until the made it unlawful. Then they were used as fighting.

Here, keep reading:

In the United Kingdom, Bull-and-terriers were used in bloodsports such as bull baiting and bear baiting. These bloodsports were officially eliminated in 1835 when Britain introduced animal welfare laws. Since dog fightings are cheaper to organize and far easier to conceal from the law than bull or bear baits, bloodsport proponents turned to pitting their dogs against each other instead. Dog fighting was used as both a bloodsport (often involving gambling) and a way to continue to test the quality of their stock. For decades afterwards, dog fighting clandestinely took place in small areas of Britain. These dogs arrived in America around 1845 to 1860, where the dog fighting practice had continuity and a new american dog breed arrived. In February 10, 1898 the breed was recognized by the United Kennel Club (UKC) named as American Pit Bull Terrier.[1]

For some time in the early part of the 20th century the UKC began to register the breed name with the word "pit" in parentheses (American (Pit) Bull Terrier), to facilitate public acceptance as American Bull Terrier.[12] But this lasted a short time and returned to the previous form.[1]

In the early 20th century, pit bulls were used as catch dogs in America for semi-wild cattle and hogs, to hunt hogs, and drive livestock, and as family companions.[11] But the dog fighting remained the main use of the breed until 1976 when it was outlawed in all states.[13]

Taken from Wikipedia/History portion of article.

Just FYI, do not just take bits and pieces of something just to support a claim, just does not look good.
