Do you wear make-up to work every day ?

Not really AIBU but. I'm 28 years old and a teacher, but I usually get mistaken for early 20s even late teens. I'm baby-faced and also come across as younger with my mannerisms so i'm told.
I'm starting a new job on Monday and i'm determined to make a good impression and for the children to respect me.
I can look older with make up and i'm wondering if I should start wearing it for work, I rarely wear it at work usually.
I don't like just putting on bits, I either do a full face or nothing. I'll have to get up a fair bit earlier in the morning. Do you think it's worth it ?

If I'm outside my house, I have make up on...

NotMeNoNo · 04/01/2020 17:28

I wear 5 minutes worth of natural looking make up: foundation, blusher, eyes, lipstick. I don’t think I’m noticeably “made up” but I feel I look a bit less washed out and more groomed with it .

Mummadeeze · 04/01/2020 17:29

Always wear primer, foundation, blusher, bronzer, eye pencil, mascara, lipstick. Takes less than 5 minutes thouhh

Arrowfanatic · 04/01/2020 17:34

I do, even though I work in a mostly empty office I just like to as I look poorly without as my skin is very sallow.

Takes me less than 10 minutes. I can spend half hour doing it if I'm going all out but generally it's just BB cream, powder, eyeshadow, eyebrows, blusher and a bit of highlighter on the cheek bones.

KittyMarmalade · 04/01/2020 17:39

I wouldn't leave the house without makeup! I don't wear that much but look so hollow-eyed and blotchy without it, I can hardly bear myself without it.

EntropyRising · 04/01/2020 17:40

So you're not a big fan of makeup but you do contour? I'm confused!

I'm mid-40s and less is more - I wear a bit of 'blur' cream, a bit of concealer around my nose, a bit of brown or plum upticked eyeliner, a bit of bronzer and some pinky/peach lipgloss. This takes me about 3 or 4 minutes and I feel slightly in lounge/pajama mode without it.

ivykaty44 · 04/01/2020 17:41

Yabu that you have to wear full make up

Just mascara, liner and lipstick is fine

FuckingHateRats · 04/01/2020 17:43

I'm a teacher too. I always wear something, just some foundation, blush, mascara and tinted lip balm.

When I don't everyone asks me if I'm unwell haha.

If you don't do it from the off though, then they won't make the comparison between make up and none.

Queenofpi · 04/01/2020 17:43

I have never worn makeup to work in my life. I am also quite baby faced and although I had to work hard to get the kids to respect me (secondary maths teacher) I don't think wearing makeup would have helped. You need to earn the respect of teenagers. I would say wearing makeup would make it harder, not easier, as if you don't do it "right" in their opinion they might scoff somewhat. I have to say that I agree with @ValancyRedfern in that I like to show them that not every woman feels they have to wear makeup every day. Good luck on your first day!

Episcomama · 04/01/2020 17:43

I think if you show up with a fully made up and contoured face you'll actually look younger and far too try-hard

Kjled · 04/01/2020 17:44

I do wear makeup for work everyday and I work in a school. But the only reason is due to the fact I had bad skin for years so it’s for my own confidence.

gamerwidow · 04/01/2020 17:47

I wear make up to work, for me it’s like armour and I feel more able to take on the world.
If you don’t want to wear make up then don’t start now especially because it’s going to give you less time in the morning.
You said in your OP it’s your mannerisms that make you seem young so if you really must change something have a look at them first.

Rachelfromfriends1 · 04/01/2020 17:50

I work in a senior management role in finance, corporate environment. I apply everything but in small amounts. I don’t look like I’m wearing a full face but I am - makeup can be tailored to suit the exact look you desire, it doesn’t have to be a cakey/full works/clubbing look all the time, you know. I get compliments all the time.

I would say my makeup looks like Naomi Genes - good skin, blusher, defined brows. Neutral tones.

ChocolateTeapots1 · 04/01/2020 17:50

45 minutes???? My wedding makeup by a makeup artist didn't take that!! What the hell are you applying? Takes me about 3 minutes to apply basic makeup (to hide bags mainly!). I wouldn't bother personally, if you look fresh faced without it what's the point? If you have kids you'll spend all your time trying to apply makeup to take 10 years of ageing off, enjoy being makeup free!

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 04/01/2020 17:54

@TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre you didn’t wash your face for 3 days? That’s vile🤢

😂😂I knew it'd make me sound scruffy, but honestly I'm not!! I wouldn't wash my face every day anyway. Hands get washed multiple times a day, obviously. Hair gets washed twice a week.

Funnily enough I also look younger than my years!

And I might have exaggerated. I got 2 days out of the makeup. 3rd day it all came off (with a baby wipe!) and then a smother of moisturiser to apologise for not giving it due care and attention for a day 😉

adaline · 04/01/2020 17:56

I wear it to work but it only takes me five minutes or so. Just concealer, foundation, some eyeshadow and mascara.

What are you doing that takes 45 minutes?!

madcatladyforever · 04/01/2020 18:00

I'm a medical professional and I always wear it to work. I like to think I make an effort. I don't wear foundation at work though. I don't like going to work looking as if I just got out of bed.

Helmlover1 · 04/01/2020 18:01

I wear make up for work because it helps me to feel more confident, plus I suffer from acne so I would feel really self conscious without it. I wear a thick foundation, sometimes concealer, blusher, mascara and lip gloss. Takes about 10 mins.

OlaEliza · 04/01/2020 18:15

I wear make up every day. Occasionally now I won't if I'm just going to the supermarket and back. I can do a full face in about 5 mins.

Alsohuman · 04/01/2020 18:16

I never leave the house without it. It takes five minutes.

Marriedwithchildren5 · 04/01/2020 18:46

I get up earlier to put it on. The one time I went with a more natural, minimalist look I was asked several times if I was poorly!!! If it helps build your confidence give it a try. I love makeup and trying different looks so I'm happy to get up earlier.

BunnytheBlueWhale · 04/01/2020 19:11

I don’t think it matters if you have a young face in itself. I mean, most people would think it a good thing(!), but even in a work context if you’re dressed and behaving appropriately and professionally then you’re age won’t come into it. Make up could help you look more polished. However I’ve often been told I look young for my age (I’m 35 and some people think I’m ten years younger especially when I’m in casual clothes) but I work in a profession role and people don’t comment on my age or how I look presumably because I look and act like I know what I’m doing...

I wear make every day for work.

TheTittefers · 04/01/2020 19:19

At a minimum, I put on Clarins Beauty Flash Balm for a glow, then light concealer around the eyes, mascara and lip balm. That’s three minutes max. On days when I have presentations or events, I add in a dewy foundation, some highlight powder, liquid eyeliner and give the eyebrows a quick brush, adding two more minutes. Without anything, I tend to look very tired and sad around the eyes.
