Do you wear make-up to work every day ?

Not really AIBU but. I'm 28 years old and a teacher, but I usually get mistaken for early 20s even late teens. I'm baby-faced and also come across as younger with my mannerisms so i'm told.
I'm starting a new job on Monday and i'm determined to make a good impression and for the children to respect me.
I can look older with make up and i'm wondering if I should start wearing it for work, I rarely wear it at work usually.
I don't like just putting on bits, I either do a full face or nothing. I'll have to get up a fair bit earlier in the morning. Do you think it's worth it ?

I never wear make up.

I'd say around one in five of the women I work with do, mostly the younger ones.

I work in the renewables industry and spend a fair amount of time outdoors though.

I'm not sure make makes anyone look older if I'm honest.

VivaLeBeaver · 04/01/2020 15:48

I do, but like others it takes me 5 mins to put on.

Foundation, powder, lipstick, eyeliner, eyebrow pencil. Done.

SenecaFalls · 04/01/2020 15:54

I usually wear make-up for work: moisturizer, primer, foundation, eyebrow pencil, eyeliner, mascara, blush, lipstick. It takes 5 minutes max.

namechangetheworld · 04/01/2020 15:56

I wouldn't have dreamt of going to work without makeup on. It always made me feel a little more confident and I always think that smart business dress looks odd with a completely plain face (on me, anyway). It always took me about 10/15 minutes in the morning so hardly a big deal.

I'm a stay at home Mum so thankfully dont have to bother any more. BB cream and mascara for the school run is about as much as I can manage to muster these days.

DappledThings · 04/01/2020 15:56

DappledThings you’d probably think I wear no makeup too! But I definitely look better with foundation or tinted moisturiser. Less grey, less blotchy.

We've discussed it so unless they are outright lying they don't. And I really don't either. I tend to just not look in the mirror!

Waxonwaxoff0 · 04/01/2020 15:57

Yes, but it doesn't take long. I have rosacea and blotchy skin so I don't feel comfortable without foundation.

I wear foundation, brow pencil, concealer and mascara.

damnthatanxiety · 04/01/2020 15:57

So just figure out how to do light makeup. Full face is a bit much. I know you day you don't do partial makeup. Well, start.

ClientListQueen · 04/01/2020 15:57

Yes, every day. Takes me about 20-25 mins

nutellalove · 04/01/2020 15:59

I wear a full face every day - it's a mixed bag in my office though, not everyone does. Takes under 5 mins once you've mastered the art

PositiveVibez · 04/01/2020 16:02

Yes. I feel pale and washed out without it.

It takes me about 5 mins. Primer, foundation, bronzer, blusher, eyeliner, eyeshadow, mascara

I don't look 'over-done' though. All quite neutral.

I wouldn't get the milk off the step without it at one time, but I'm much more relaxed now - RG, will take the dog for a walk or go the shops without slap on.

TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre · 04/01/2020 16:02

45 minutes!!!!! What are you doing?! I've had professional make up applied for a wedding and it only took about 20 minutes and last 3 days with a little touch up here and there 😂 😂

PositiveVibez · 04/01/2020 16:02

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 04/01/2020 16:03

There has to be some middle ground between none and full face. I used to often not wear make up pre DS but I had time to have my eyelashes and brows done regularly, had an excellent skin care regime and got a lot of sleep and exercise. Now I look like hell, but have no time for the above, so a quick 5-10 minutes, concealer, BB cream, benetint, mascara and I've usually got some kind of lip balm/Vaseline tin in my handbag. I have started getting my eyebrows threaded and it helps because they're neat and tidy so I don't have to do anything else to them. If I didn't wear any make up to work people would think I was ill, not young.

ValancyRedfern · 04/01/2020 16:09

I'm a teacher and made a decision not to wear make up to school as I wanted to show the teenagers it wasn't essential. It also means I can set my alarm later in the morning! Whether you wear make up or not won't have an impact on how much the kids respect you. Do whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Notagainnnn · 04/01/2020 16:10

Another suggestion, use products that are speedy in application. So instead of foundation a BB cream and concealer, a cream blush like Charlotte Tilbury's glowgasm in the pink shade. (Everyone should be using bronzer and or blush if they put on foundation or your just left looking Ill)
Mascara, brow mascara instead of a pencil, kohl eyeliner on top lashline and smudged out with tiny brush so you don't have to get it perfect. No wings on liner. Lip tint or long lasting liquid lipstick patted out in a your lips but better colour so you are less likely to need lipliner and make a mess during the day. Face powder on eyelids if they get oily or bronzer on eyelids for a bit of depth. Doesn't need to be a full on look.

XXXXXX42 · 04/01/2020 16:13

I’m 42 and have never routinely worn make up. I certainly don’t bother for work!

SachaStark · 04/01/2020 16:16

I’m also a secondary teacher, @OP, a year older than you, but also very petite and look younger than I am!

I wear makeup to work about 50% of the time. Bare Minerals foundation and mascara. I don’t bother if I feel like my skin needs a makeup-free day. Not one student has ever commented on my makeup or lack of makeup.

I’d say that if you’re wanting the students to respect you, let that come from your voice, not your appearance. Firm, clear instruction, and don’t let them hear any “wiggle room” in your voice. Then, show them that you like them. No teenager wants to disappoint somebody who they feel genuinely likes them, they want to work for them instead. At least that’s my experience, and I’ve taught a lot of overpacked “difficult” classes by this point.

ShawshanksRedemption · 04/01/2020 16:17

Always have done, as it helps me looked a better version (IMHO) of me. I'm in my 40s though, and every little helps. I go for a natural look that makes me feel polished than overly made up.

Animum2 · 04/01/2020 16:17

Only time I've ever worn make up was when I got married and even then I was reluctant, prefer to go natural

Notagainnnn · 04/01/2020 16:17

Honestly though I get why it takes so long! I used to do full on Nikki tutorials style looks. No one needs all that everyday but all these influencers like James Charles and Jeffree Star have the people thinking this is expected, it's not obviously. Now I do a mixture of Chloe Morello type looks and Charlotte Tilbury. Tati (glamlifeguru) always looks nice but that's too much too for day to day.
Less is more, and more forgiving, natural, quick and classic. Looking back I looked horrific like a dry, washed up, cakey person in drag. Good skin care is key. Now I don't need half as much on my skin.

Purpleartichoke · 04/01/2020 16:17

I am incredibly pale and I have nearly white eyebrows and eyelashes. That corn silk color they use for creepy kids in horror films.

I use a tinted moisturizer, brown eyebrow powder, and mascara. Just enough that I am not completely washed out.

Emeraldshamrock · 04/01/2020 16:19

I wear some, not full face looking I use powder, one colour eye shadow and mascara.
As I always have they'd probably get a fright with my fair eyelashes. Grin

EmpressLesbianInChair · 04/01/2020 16:20

I hate going to have my eyebrows waxed/threaded as I find it too painful so I tend to draw new ones on now

When did natural eyebrows go out of fashion anyway? All this waxing, threading etc just sounds like paying for unnecessary torture.

emsyj37 · 04/01/2020 16:26

I do wear makeup every day, yes - foundation, blush, brows, eyeshadow, liner, mascara, lipstick. The whole thing takes about 10 minutes. When I was younger I only wore foundation and mascara but I'm old and haggard now so I need more help.

A 45 minute makeup application including heavy contouring sounds like it would be appropriate for a night out rather than the workplace. Heavy contouring is better suited to dim lighting (or photography, or the theatre) than broad daylight. I doubt it would make you look older/give you more gravitas. If you want to wear makeup every day then maybe look at the products you're using and learn a more natural and quick look?

TurkeyStuffingPudding · 04/01/2020 16:27

I do, I feel more presentable that way, but I do a fullish face in under 15 minutes.

Maybe experiment and time yourself

My whole morning routine is 45minutes!
