Do you wear make-up to work every day ?

Not really AIBU but. I'm 28 years old and a teacher, but I usually get mistaken for early 20s even late teens. I'm baby-faced and also come across as younger with my mannerisms so i'm told.
I'm starting a new job on Monday and i'm determined to make a good impression and for the children to respect me.
I can look older with make up and i'm wondering if I should start wearing it for work, I rarely wear it at work usually.
I don't like just putting on bits, I either do a full face or nothing. I'll have to get up a fair bit earlier in the morning. Do you think it's worth it ?

Makeup won’t make the children respect you. They are teens they are programmed to not respect anyone except people their own age.

Wear as much or as little as you are comfortable wearing.

Waveysnail · 04/01/2020 16:30

Iv toned my down to la Roche-posay BB cream, some cream blush and mascara

TheFlis12345 · 04/01/2020 16:32

I have a fairly senior marketing role. I only wear make up for pitches and meetings with senior clients, my skin doesn’t like make up very much so my team and junior clients have to make do with me bare faced most of the time! Grin

makeup does not equal 'bothered'. Clean and tidy equals bothered. I work from home but in years in an office, never slapped up and did very well, thank you. Mostly male colleagues, perhaps that made a difference, maybe a female run firm expects lots of paint. Although I would hope not.

as the OP proves, the beige paint, red and black circles do stick on 10 years so if that's what's wanted, go for it.

StoneofDestiny · 04/01/2020 16:36

Never wear makeup to work or otherwise.

StoneofDestiny · 04/01/2020 16:37

I'm washed, tidy and smartly dressed. That is enough

ValancyRedfern · 04/01/2020 16:38

Reading your OP again I saw you mention mannerisms making you look younger. You need to practice giving off high status signals with your body language. Stand upright shoulders back and keep your feet apart planted on the floor (pacing is low status). If you keep fiddling with your hands out them on your hips. Keep still as much as possible including your head. Talk more slowly. These are all high status tricks I've learned from acting which have stood me in good stead when teaching.

Very rarely wear makeup to work. Possibly for a supplier meeting or a job interview.

I've worked in the same, heavily older-male dominated workplace since I was in my early 20s, and have never wanted to draw too much attention to my appearance because I wanted to be taken seriously for my work, not my looks. I felt that people might think I was a bimbo.

And now I just can't be bothered to be honest.

TooManyPaws · 04/01/2020 16:40

Never wear make up at work, except perhaps some tinted moisturiser or concealer.to even up blotches. Getting your eyelashes and eyebrows dyed saves on mascara and used to be popular with female officers when I worked with the police. I much prefer a natural look (and it doesn't seem to be unpopular with men either) as authority comes from yourself rather than clarting your face. I've spent too much time with the military and police to think that anything other than clean, neat and tidy is professional.

Mermaidtissues · 04/01/2020 16:43

I wear makeup everyday, a mineral powder foundation, eyeliner, mascara and lip balm or stick. If I don’t wear the foundation I get spots, I’m used to it now. Takes a few minutes after my daily shower

olympicsrock · 04/01/2020 16:45

I do a professional but very hands on role. My make up routine takes no more than 5 mins ( perhaps 2 on average). Moisturiser, Gel foundation ( borjois healthy skin ) blush/ bronze, eyebrow pencil, eye shadow, nude lip crayon, eye pencil and mascara. I look much more together than bare faced.

BlueChangeling · 04/01/2020 16:47

Depends on what colour my hair is dyed. I can get away with no make up when it's brown but I look really washed out if it's any lighter and need to add a bit of colour to my face to look alive.

TheNavigator · 04/01/2020 16:49

Every day I go into the office - I am mid 50s and resemble a corpse dredged from the water after an early morning commute without make up. It only takes me a few minutes - mainly foundation in the T area and some blusher to enliven my deathly pallor, mascara, lip gloss and I'm done.

PhoneLock · 04/01/2020 16:51

My whole morning routine is 45 minutes!

Mine is about ten. Shower, dry, brush my teeth, shake my hair, done!

NemophilistRebel · 04/01/2020 16:53

I wear make up every day that I leave the house. Takes less than 2 minutes. I get ready and out of the house quicker than DH

myfuckingfreezer · 04/01/2020 16:56

I wear primer, foundation, powder, concealer, eye shadow, brows, eye liner, mascara, blusher, lip liner and lipstick, all in fairly natural colours and as said it takes less than five mins. I've genuinely no idea how you spend forty five mins applying make up

I don't understand how all this can take less than 5mins! It takes almost that long to let your primer rest before foundation!

hazeyjane · 04/01/2020 17:00

I always wear makeup.
Foundation
Concealer
Powder
Bluster
Eyebrow pencil
Eye liner
Eye shadow
Mascara
Lipstick
Hair up
= 10 - 15 mins

Furrydogmum · 04/01/2020 17:04

I wear minimal make-up for work because I want my skin tone to look even, I just use a creme to powder base, mascara and neutral lipstick - I like to look different when I go out..

WhenISnappedAndFarted · 04/01/2020 17:06

I always wear a bit of make up.

You don't need to be contouring for work!

Fr0g · 04/01/2020 17:07

45 minutes - wow
Five minutes max, and that probably includes making tea and feeding the cat. (Warehouse style flat where everything is close together).
BB cream, eye makeup, maybe lips.
I went thru a phase where my face frequently v sweaty (medication side effect) so stopped bothering then, but generally feel more confident - once people are used to my face with make up, a non make up day will generate a lot of 'are you feeling OK?' queries.

More than anything, in my current role I do lots of online meetings; without that I might only catch a glimpse of myself if I go to the loo - the online meetings can mean seeing my image for an hour+!

Fr0g · 04/01/2020 17:10

I don't understand how all this can take less than 5mins! It takes almost that long to let your primer rest before foundation!

that's where feeding the cat ormaking tea is useful!

Rachelfromfriends1 · 04/01/2020 17:15

@TellMeWhoTheVilliansAre you didn’t wash your face for 3 days? That’s vile🤢

JamieFrasersSassenach · 04/01/2020 17:18

I work in a school - I put foundation on every morning for work, if I then arrive with time to spare I apply mascara, eyebrow pencil, lipliner and lipstick in my car, two of my colleagues also do the same......

Rachelfromfriends1 · 04/01/2020 17:20

What are people defining contouring as? Some seem to be make out as if it’s particularly difficult or time consuming?

I just get a powder and brush, sweep it across my jaw and cheeks, it probably takes the same amount of time to apply as blusher, so seconds? Not sure what the fuss is about.

Isleepinahedgefund · 04/01/2020 17:21

You won’t be respected more by the kids for wearing makeup (unless you want to trade eyeliner tips with them?!)

If you feel more confident wearing makeup then go for it, if not then you’re still exactly the same person. It’s the same as wearing a certain outfit that makes you feel confident.

I wear makeup for work, I love makeup and I occupy myself on the train journey by applying it. Takes me between 5 mins and half hour depending on what else I’m doing at the same time.

I’d never judge anyone for wearing or not wearing makeup - I don’t think you’re setting any better example for the children by wearing it or not wearing it.
