To ask where people buy baby things now that mothercare is gone?

All of the mothercares near me have closed down and now their website is also gone.
I’m expecting a baby in may so need to start shopping soonish but wondering where people actually buy their baby stuff from? With my first I had two mothercares within 1 mile of me so everything came from there (feeding, pushchair, play mat etc) but now I’ve only got a mamas and papas and TBH it’s a bit expensive to get everything in there. Clothes are fine as I can get them from places like next, sainsburys, Asda etc but if I were to actually want to shop for my bits rather than just amazon it where would I go?

Seconding Winstanleys for prams - we've bought 2 Phil and Teds from them in 12 years and always had great, knowledgeable and polite customer service experiences with them.
As PPs have said, supermarkets are great for baby clothes and eBay. And check out Aldi's baby event coming up. You can buy from their website for home delivery now too! Smile

A lovely person posted this on my thread - it’s all the supermarket baby events :)

2 kids and i never bought anything in mothercare. was in there a couple if times, but had no appeal to md
buggy: second hand from local pages
carseat: online, or halfords etc
clothes: h&m, boots
sling: online and/or secondhand

soundsystem · 04/01/2020 05:55

Another one who never bought anything in Mothercare (3 kids). Aldi, Asda, Matalan, John Lewis and Ikea mostly, although got a lot of stuff second hand on local Facebook groups

stuckinthemiddlewithtwats · 04/01/2020 06:01

I started buying really early - assumed we'd only be able to afford to buy from aldi etc but their stuff turned out to be shite and not worth the money. Bought Pram and cot new from eBay but gutted that we missed out on ridiculously low prices at our closing mothercare (eg cot and sprung mattress was £32.50) as we'd already bought the big stuff to spread the cost over the pregnancy.

I have the same issue as you OP, we don't have any decent shopping centres without travelling miles. No mamas and papas, no John Lewis etc. Our boots is tiny and stocks very little. My DP did a trip to ikea to check out their baby stuff and was less than impressed.

I've got three children under five and have honestly never bought anything in mothercare in my life! There are loads of places to buy things, literally hundreds of places. I hate shopping so buy everything online, mothercare's website has always been awful so I've just never shopped there. Prams/carseats etc can be bought online, just read the reviews and get next day delivery!

mousemousse · 04/01/2020 06:14

Go o to topcashback, search 'baby' and pick the online store with the best cashback rate.

Also Facebook marketplace where you can get most stuff for £5 almost new

user1480880826 · 04/01/2020 06:16

Nobody bought stuff from mother care in the first place. That’s why it went into administration.

Amazon and John Lewis have everything.

mistermagpie · 04/01/2020 06:16

Oh and secondhand - seriously so much lovely nursery furniture gets sold for really low prices. My two eldest both had beautiful cots from gumtree for absolute buttons and I've had two running buggies and a double for peanuts. I'd always recommend secondhand for prams - they are so personal really and an £800 travel system is silly money if you end up not liking the pram.

THAT90sBITCH · 04/01/2020 06:18

Anyone know if boots will sell the terry towelling sleepsuits? Or know anywhere else that sells them?

Herja · 04/01/2020 08:00

Aldi! Seriously! Check their baby events, there's one soon.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 04/01/2020 08:02

Clothes - h&m, next, Sainsbury's
Furniture inc highchair - ikea
Small toys, blankets, playmate- ikea
Car seat and pushchair - John Lewis (though I'd happily buy 2nd hand pushchair)

I'll be honest I never bought a thing from Mothercare for with of my own dc.

Aldi baby event in a couple of days, they have a bedside / next to me type crib for a really good price. Order online and it's free delivery.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 04/01/2020 08:12

Although the names are awful we got some things , pram etc from precious little one and trendy baby websites, I got a heavily reduced next to me through the bounty app. Breast pads, maternity towels etc aldi baby event had the branded ones not just their own, also for an ambiano baby food processor which was really useful for weaning because it came with all the silicone freezer trays etc. We also got a lot from John Lewis, wardrobe came from Dunelm, chest of drawers/changing table and nursery chair IKEA , mamas and papas for nice blankets and an activity mat, we drove past Mothercare to get to most of these places. I did like some of the little bird stuff and hope someone else picks the range up.

LionelRitchieStoleMyNotebook · 04/01/2020 08:13

Clothes Next JL and H&M mixed in with JoJo, kite PoP sales, plus supermarket basics. Breast pump best price was Amazon black Friday sale

lifesgoodwithlg · 04/01/2020 08:19

There's an Aldi Baby are event coming up soon incl their cosleeper. I find the quality of their stuff excellent.

hammeringinmyhead · 04/01/2020 08:28

We bought our Cosatto travel system and bedside crib in Mothercare but nothing else. Amazon for changing bag, Asda online for a Cosatto umbrella fold pushchair, Boots for the car seat and Savers for wipes. Sypermarket nappies (Asda). Pound shop for weaning spoons and pots as they sell Tommee Tippee.

I do agree that if you want to actually try a pram out, there is very little option to do so, but there always was. Not a single place in Bristol city centre stocks prams without going to Cribbs Causeway.

THAT90sBITCH · 04/01/2020 08:31

Aldi baby event is in store thursday

YourOpinionIsNoted · 04/01/2020 08:50

Have to say though, I went to Mothercare for my first. Didn't buy everything from there but it was a good place to start, and good to be able to see / try a lot of different stuff in one place. I also had a really lovely lady help me with feeding bras when I was a few days post partum and struggling with giant milk boobs! It's a shame it's gone. I found that once I got my confidence as a parent that was when I stopped using it, it had a lot of reassurance value for me.

Agree that IKEA stuff is a bit rubbish. All their baby furniture feels very flimsy, and they only do foam mattresses for their cots (I think) whereas we bought a proper pocket sprung one from Mothercare.

GrumpyHoonMain · 04/01/2020 08:55

John Lewis
Mamas and Papas (online)
Natural Baby Shower
Winstanley’s Pram World

shartsi · 04/01/2020 08:56

M&S for clothes

Hepsibar · 04/01/2020 09:16

Google for local shops. Women's Institute shops often have a lot of lovely hand knitted stuff.

Or there is always Amazon and EBay.

Hi I’m a new grandmother.. I too am looking at baby shops now mother are has gone
I need a socket cover as the cot is next to a plug socket that I have to plug in the monitor and lamp soo need to be able to cover the actual plugs that are switched on .. I bought one off Amazon but it doesn’t fit the socket far too big .. I have standard double socket I have seen sine but they are really expensive .. I had lots of these around the house when my children were little (28 years ago) from mothercare and we’re in a pack of 5 and nowhere near as expensive ... even taking into consideration price increases .. where can I buy reasonable priced ones ?

I don’t think plug socket covers are recommended in the UK anymore. I believe they’re actually more dangerous than leaving it uncovered, ideally with the switch off when it’s not used. I can’t quite remember the physics behind why this is though. This would explain why you’re struggling to buy them I think.

Lidl has loads of baby stuff on at the moment. I'm really impressed that they have some great brands on cheap.
Samuel Johnston is a baby shop based in NI with a huge range of equipment like prams, high chairs etc although they don't do clothes.
For baby clothes I shop at the supermarkets.
