To ask where people buy baby things now that mothercare is gone?

All of the mothercares near me have closed down and now their website is also gone.
I’m expecting a baby in may so need to start shopping soonish but wondering where people actually buy their baby stuff from? With my first I had two mothercares within 1 mile of me so everything came from there (feeding, pushchair, play mat etc) but now I’ve only got a mamas and papas and TBH it’s a bit expensive to get everything in there. Clothes are fine as I can get them from places like next, sainsburys, Asda etc but if I were to actually want to shop for my bits rather than just amazon it where would I go?

Lidl had some bedside cribs and other baby stuff recently.
There are also new / as new shops about, eBay, gumtree and the NCT sales.
DS was baby at boot sale / hand me downs and eBay

I haven’t bought anything really from Mothercare for any of my children. Overpriced and not that good, with bad customer service. I’m not surprised they have gone under, although I’m sure I’ve read about something to do with some of their products being sold at Boots in the future.

KellyHall · 03/01/2020 23:31

Definitely Boots.

And if you join their Baby Club with your Advantage Card, you get 10 points for every £1 spent on baby related items which is like getting 10% cash back!

M&S do adorable, good quality baby and child clothes.

Argos

didireallysaythat · 03/01/2020 23:34

eBay? I thought Mothercare closed years ago, I was surprised to hear they've only just gone.

Ilikewinter · 03/01/2020 23:36

Mothercare will be in larger branches of Boots from summertime this year.

zen1 · 03/01/2020 23:37

Mothercare are still selling through Boots online (including buggies). The plan is to keep selling the Mothercare brand through Boots.

LtJudyHopps · 03/01/2020 23:44

Kiddicare did go bust but Dunelm have Kiddicare stock online. I believe they have some Kiddicare areas in some of their stores now also.

Italiandreams · 03/01/2020 23:44

Always said Mothercare lacked customer service, as a new parent you often want advice ( not necesssarily brand recommendations , I understand they can’t do that) but for example when I got a car seat John Lewis where great. They asked my about my child/ car etc and told me which car seats would meet my requirements but the staff in mothercare had not idea. Just googled on an iPad which I could have done myself! As a crazy , hormonal first time mum, I needed to feel that someone knew what they were talking about. I just couldn’t understand why mothercare didn’t understand that. I know several people who had similar experiences.

DinoSn0re · 03/01/2020 23:45

I’ve had three babies in the past few years and never set foot in a mothercare store. There were three or four within fairly easy driving distance too.

I’ve always shopped in the supermarkets, Argos, Jojo Maman Bebe and online.

DinoSn0re · 03/01/2020 23:46

Oh and John Lewis! I find their baby section quite nice to look around.

Ikea is good too.

Equanimitas · 03/01/2020 23:47

Can't you reuse the pushchair etc that you got for your first child?

Poppinjay · 03/01/2020 23:48

I wouldn't go near Mama's and Papa's. My quite pricey pushchair/travel system didn't ever stay folded. They charged me to take it back to look at it and then didn't fix it. When I got it back still not folding properly, they just shrugged at me and refused to engage.

MyDcAreMarvel · 03/01/2020 23:52

I thought Mothercare was good value £16 for a three pack of babygros , lovely quality and they did terry towelling ones.
Anyway Mothercare items will be on sale in Boots stores.

NemophilistRebel · 03/01/2020 23:57

I never bought from mothercare previously

Pram - John Lewis
Cot - Mokee
General baby bits - a mix of John Lewis / amazon / kiddicare / groovystyle/ Ikea

I’d 100% recommend Groovystyle for anyone in south Hertfordshire

Branster · 03/01/2020 23:58

Weurdly enough I never once actually made a purchase in Mothercare, visited but bought nothing. I didn’t use and won’t miss it and am amazed it lasted so long.
I second a good independent shop even if it’s further away than where you live, it’s so worth it. You get proper advice and good choice for a buggy system and cots. John Lewis is great for car seats and furniture as well.
You really only need one good buggy and car seat and cot bed to start with as big items for long term use. That’s where you need to spend time and money. Apart from that a portable bath, Moses basket and bedding easy to find everywhere. Clothes are also everywhere Gap, Next, supermarkets, H&M, department stores and independent shops plus online stores. And everything else like stair gates, safety items etc are online everywhere.

Boots and John Lewis

zigzagbetty · 04/01/2020 00:01

Never bought in mothercare as when comparing prices they were always more expensive. We got our car seat from boots (with a bonus of £50 worth of points!) , cot from ikea and wardrobes etc from argos.

NameChange30 · 04/01/2020 00:06

I buy the vast majority of stuff online.
Check out Aldi baby events as PPs said.

Are you superstitious about buying things too far ahead of your due date?
I can understand waiting until you've had your 20 week scan but once you've had that you should crack on.

If the unthinkable happens you could return or sell things.

MissPepper8 · 04/01/2020 00:10

I never used mothercare, I bought big items from the actual brand retailer, I bought our pushchair from a specialist pram store that did various brands (got a good deal with the whole unit and a car seat), snuzpod from themselves.

Stuff like a bath, bottles, the sheets for the pod ect came from IKEA or amazon. Tbh I find mamas and papas and mothercare expensive so I just found deals else where.

Thehop · 04/01/2020 00:12

Look at the mamas and papas factory shop page on Facebook. They do free next day post and take PayPal. Loads cheaper than store.

Holdencaulfieldshomeboy · 04/01/2020 00:14

I bought a few this gas from babiesrus- part of toysrus which has also now gone Hmm quite a lot from amazon. My pram from silver cross website. Things like clothes and nappies Next, Tesco, Asda etc.

BillyAndTheSillies · 04/01/2020 00:14

John Lewis is great for baby stuff. Supermarkets usually stock lots of baby things, especially in the Asda/Tesco superstores.

Bought our buggy from Winstanleys. Had really good service from them.

Nursery furniture was from an independent shop we found at The Baby Show.

AngeloMysterioso · 04/01/2020 03:30

We got our pram/car seat bundle online from Winstanleys Pramworld- really good price and the company is independent and has a really good reputation.
