Would you find this offensive around DC?

We had some relatives staying and found it quite offensive some of the language they used with the DC. AIBU or would you too?

Examples: Goddamn. As in Put down that Goddamn tablet (to DC)
Dc also used: Hell, For God'ssake and the like.

DH was brought up C of E, I less so but still found I didn't like this kind of thing. DC primary age

77% of people think saying “Put down that Goddamn tablet” to a child is ok? Confused

Well done @TheFuckingDogs you must be very proud 🙄

BlueRussianCat · 03/01/2020 20:56

When mines difficult I will say "Jesus Christ miniBlue" but not God damn. I might say "Put the bloody thing down then!" or something like that. Becuse blaspheming is nothing, no big deal, not swearing.

Ohyesiam · 03/01/2020 20:57

I like swearing, and am surprised that hell and goddamn are seen as swearing, BUT it’s sounds really disrespectful, bordering aggressive to say things like that to kids, rather than just around them.

AhoyMrBeaver · 03/01/2020 21:01

I don't think goddamned is offensive. I've never used it because it's not in my lexicon, but I'd say damned in front of anyone eg 'Where's the damned cat?'. It's no worse than that is it?

WeeSleekitTimerousMoosey · 03/01/2020 21:05

Perhaps say to them that you dont like swearing around the kids

They might not consider the terms in question to be swearing though. I don't.

If you asked me not to swear I'd think you meant fuck, cunt, shite, wank. It wouldn't occur to me you were including for gods sake, or hell.

Also I am always puzzled by this mild, e.g. bugger.

Why is bugger considered mild compared to fuck? It makes no sense.

BigFatLiar · 03/01/2020 21:12

The use of swear words is because they are taboo, the underlying meaning is utterly irrelevant.

If thats so why isn't it ok to use racist/homphobic terms as swear words? Is it only ok to offend certain groups?

Owlypants · 03/01/2020 21:12

I don't find any of those words offensive and don't understand why they're considered swearing. I think a child saying hell is better than a child saying fuck, I said fuck as a child and was told if i said it again i was going to bad fire

TheFuckingDogs · 03/01/2020 21:48

overnightangel - yep I am proud! My child understands how and when to use language appropriately and also knows how some language can cause hurt and upset to others and that this is always wrong so eye roll right back at you 🙄🙄

TheFuckingDogs · 03/01/2020 21:51

And yes obviously not swearing at them 😊

MoonlightMistletoe · 03/01/2020 22:02

I wonder if they already had altered their words "put down the goddamn tablet" when usually they'd say "put down the fucking tablet" ? I don't think goddamn is a swear word well it's not one I hear often if it is. But if you are uncomfortable with the things around the children then you need to tell them they are being inappropriate in your opinion x

Newname1978 · 03/01/2020 22:04

Like PPs said depends how it's used

sirfredfredgeorge · 03/01/2020 22:35

It is okay to offend generic "god", lots of religions have gods, and all of them are equally as offensive to gods of other religions as a non-religious person using god as a taboo word, like damned.

The use of "Jesus Christ" is similar to homophobic, racist or disablist terms, it is milder in that it's used as a curse rather than an insult, but yes it's more unacceptable, but hell, damn, god are not specifically insulting anyone. If it was then religions when then insult others by talking about worshipping false idols or similar would be similarly wrong.

Rosebel · 03/01/2020 22:45

I don't think the words you mentioned are offensive and certainly not swearing. If they'd said fuck I'd understand but this seems really mild. Equally silly isn't really bad, I've said that to my children before now.
