AIBU to think that McDonalds need to up their vegan game

As a vegan the start of veganuary is always really exciting when all the new companies bring out their vegan stuff - this year seems to be particularly great - Greggs have brought the vegan steak bake, kfc have their vegan burger and McDonald’s....well they’ve taken the horrible goujon things they have in their veggie burger, sold them separately and marketed them as a new vegan meal! Grin AIBU to think that they need to seriously up their game?

The vegetarians that I know eat vegan food too. They don't always include dairy or eggs. Are they doing vegetarianism wrongly? On MN no vegetarians seem to touch anything unless it has two pounds of grated cheddar over it.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 10:44

I think it's fine if you enjoy dairy/eggs btw but I don't get this idea that seems to be prevalent on here that vegetarians can't have vegan food. Also, perhaps it's area dependent but in my city there's still generally plenty of vegetarian options including dairy.

gingersausage · 03/01/2020 10:46

Rubbish @RollingOutOfBed. Omnis can eat vegan food too, but they won’t. It’s about choice. I’m a vegetarian, I like cheese. Why shouldn’t I eat it? I’m not stopping omnis eating meat or forcing vegans to eat dairy so why the need to be so chippy?

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 10:52

I'm not the one being chippy, but I do find it odd that vegans on here(I've only really seen this on MN) talk of vegan food as though it's completely alien to vegetarians and not something they could countenance eating, and I'm talking vegetable and pulse based dishes here, not faux meat.

Again perhaps it varies by area and I think it probably makes sense to have some vegetarian dishes that contain dairy and/or egg, because people enjoy them, but at least in my city/county I haven't seen any sign of them disappearing from menus.

motherheroic · 03/01/2020 10:55

I don't think they have to. But I do find it funny that they use the SAME smushed vegetables for every veggie/vegan option Grin

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 10:56

I have to go to dinners for work and now the options tend to be ‘carnivore or vegan’.

The last one I was at the ‘vegan’ at the table (‘Oh I’m not really a vegan’) was asking for the pesto sauce for the vegan main dish (a load of sautéd veg on some hard pasty) and complained about the bland meal. I had to ‘snag’ a nice pudding from one of the staff as the option was a fruit salad.

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 10:58

‘Vegetarians can eat vegan food’ - have you tried the M&S vegan ‘Caesar salad’. I can usually eat almost anything if hungry but this went in the bin! It was foul.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 10:58

Caesar salad in any form doesn't appeal to me so no, I haven't tried it.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 11:00

You should visit here then because I'm looking through menus of some of the restaurants I've visited and it's like 50 shades of cheese.

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 11:00

I only got it because it was low in calories and the best of a very small choice. Yuk.

WatchingTheMoon · 03/01/2020 11:00

I love how up in arms people get about McDonalds. Do you think other companies are all super ethical and that the animals they use die of old age in a nice field with the farmer holding their hoof?

CactusAndCacti · 03/01/2020 11:04

"Grab and go" options are fairly rubbish across the board. It is very difficult to get a sandwich without mayonnaise.

gingersausage · 03/01/2020 11:08

@RollingOutOfBed I guess it depends very much where you live and what your eating out budget is like. I’m more pissed off about the “veganisation” of veggie convenience food to be honest. Morrisons and Tesco meat free frozen ranges used to be wonderful, now most of it tastes like cardboard. Quorn have discontinued over half of the stuff I used to love, and the vegan versions of the staples like sausages are horrible.

mencken · 03/01/2020 11:08

if you are a vegan you presumably are quite big on low footprint. So why are you eating all these takeaways with their tons of packaging?

make a sandwich.

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 11:09

It's not all about animal welfare.

When I was at school the destruction of the Amazon rainforest as part of the industry was known.

People are more clued up now on environmental issues - or do they just want to say 'oh I'm a vegan' and ignore the 'ethical lifestyle' part?

CactusAndCacti · 03/01/2020 11:10

No, I don't think all other companies are super ethical, but McDonald's is generally considered to be one of the worst.

I do go to McDonald's, but I don't deny that they have some dubious ethics.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 11:14

The main point of veganism is and was the animal ethics issues. www.vegansociety.com/go-vegan/definition-veganism

The definition has expanded a bit and there are increasing numbers of people going vegan for environmental reasons and it's a common secondary reason for other vegans but it isn't an absolutely essential part of being vegan.

RollingOutOfBed · 03/01/2020 11:16

At least in the UK. I've no idea about other countries.

easyandy101 · 03/01/2020 11:19

Convenience veganism is a very weird avenue of consumerism

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 11:20

Its a trend. Everyone is desperate for a label these days.

MyGhastIsFlabbered · 03/01/2020 11:21

I've yet to go anywhere and only see omni or vegan options with no vegetarian offerings. It just doesn't happen imo.

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 11:23

It does, it really does!

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 11:25

Or you will find that the vegetarian offering has been limited to one thing, a new vegan (or several) item/s has been added and no change to the carnivore offerings.

As I said earlier - I have to go to events ad the food is now mostly /carnivore or vegan'. The last conference I went to had a buffet and the ''non-carnovore' food was greasy (and soggy) roast veg, and coiled to death grain (also soggy and greasy).

Lordfrontpaw · 03/01/2020 11:26

boiled not coiled.
