To want my aunt and family to just go home

They came up for a visit on boxing day and for the most part it's been fine. It's my aunt and uncle. They're considerate guests mostly but I'm used to living alone. I've been hosting and doing most of the cooking though they have paid for takeaway.

I've loved seeing them but was expecting them to go home today as that was the plan. I have loads of uni work to do and was really looking forward to getting the house sorted, doing some baking and cracking on with it.

This morning they announced that they're staying until tomorrow because the weather is too bad for them to drive home. They're both mid sixties and generally we'll. They have a 70 mile drive but the weather isn't that bad (bit grey, some rain). I can't exactly force them out but my god tomorrow can't come fast enough

Can you say you’ve got plans and go out today? This is pretty rude of them 😬

AryaStarkWolf · 02/01/2020 12:31

That's far too long to have house guests imo

Leeds2 · 02/01/2020 12:33

Tell them you have uni work to do, so they will have to cater for themselves and entertain themselves too.

fedup21 · 02/01/2020 12:34

That’s extremely rude!

Are they very close to you? My uncle and aunts might stay with their own children or my parents but they certainly wouldn’t invite themselves to stay with me for a night or even a week!

Cherrysoup · 02/01/2020 12:36

Did they invite themselves? Did they say how long they’d be staying before they arrived? Next time, tell them how long they can stay and that you have other guests due so they limit the time they stay.

JKScot4 · 02/01/2020 12:36

A week? go out yourself today, I’d have murdered them by now, rain doesn’t stop them driving 🙄

Say you have plans for this afternoon, take your Uni work and go out somewhere, even if it's just to sit in a coffee shop. They're being a bit inconsiderate.

SusanneLinder · 02/01/2020 12:40

Suppose you can't throw them out as such, but I would say you have stuff to do today, and just get it done. Let them get on with it! Oh and you are out all day tomorrow if they decide the weather's bad then too.

messolini9 · 02/01/2020 12:41

This morning they announced that they're staying until tomorrow
Why did you not just say sorry, we had already arranged for today to be the last day & I have other plans so you cannot extend your stay?

because the weather is too bad for them to drive home.
Sure. This is a real reason. There are NO cars allowed on the roads today, have you not seen all the news reports?

I can't exactly force them out
As I said, I have other things arranged now, so will have to love you & leave you, here's your bag, lovely to see you, BYE!

Mumoftwoyoungkids · 02/01/2020 12:43

“That’s fine. Although today is my big cleaning day. Uncle Fred - do you want to hoover and dust and Aunty Mary - you could clean the bathrooms and kitchen?”

They may suddenly decide that the weather has perked up after all!

LesLavandes · 02/01/2020 12:45

On the upside, they are obviously enjoying themselves 😊

QuestionableMouse · 02/01/2020 13:01

I did say they needed to go but my aunt is a very dramatic woman and tbh I couldn't face the fallout if I basically kicked them out. I should have told them I was at work today but was so shocked I didn't think of it quickly enough.

My sister and nephews are here too so I'm pottering in the kitchen. Planning an early night because I'm "at work" tomorrow. Not actually but I'm determined they're going home.

Blimey-why do you have such a houseful so long after Xmas!? That would drive me mad.

LemonPrism · 02/01/2020 13:13

Why are they here it's not Xmas anymore... I've been back at work a week!
