to think my neighbours are being unfair?

For background, and at the risk of sounding like a boast, we are on a ver naice housing estate, houses around the £700k mark. This is relevant.

There is a fence between us and next door. It’s their fence, we are responsible for the fence on the other side. They extended their garage backwards along the fence line. Three panels were damaged and despite loads of promises they never replaced them. So our boundary looks terrible, the garage has windows in it which overlook our garden while the fence panel isn’t there.

We have politely asked when they plan to fix it, they said they would but they couldn’t find anyone/tradesman didn’t turn up/getting more quotes.

Still not done. It pisses me off because I think we’ll why would anyone give up neighbourly goodwill etc for the sake of 3 panels? And say they were going to fix it and then not? They can’t see the panels but that doesn’t mean they’re not there! Argh!

DH is getting really cross about it and is muttering something about replacing the whole fence with max height panels (and sniper towers, search lights and razor wire...Wink) but I’d rather they just bloody fixed it.

I think it depends on how long it's been like that for? It's been xmas and a lot of tradesman take some time off so there may be a wait.

StrangeLookingParasite · 02/01/2020 07:34

Yep get whores and send them round.

That escalated quickly.

NewName73 · 02/01/2020 07:37

Tell them you will get the work done yourselves and send them a bill, then do it.

It might also be worth checking if their garage complies fully with planning regulations too. It's odd that they put in windows to overlook your garden, they could be planning to turn it into accommodation.

ThePawtriarchy · 02/01/2020 07:39

The problem with using whores on your neighbour’s side of the boundary is that their best side will face your neighbours.

citychick · 02/01/2020 07:39

I'd wager money that the OP will be able to tell when these neighbours decide to sell, if the boundary is left untidy.

Any estate agent worth their salt will ask them to sort out that boundary. Any potential purchasers will want that sorted ASAP.

Canadianpancake · 02/01/2020 07:43

Maybe the whoars can fix the fence? 🤷

MsJaneAusten · 02/01/2020 07:44

The fence isn’t the problem. The garage with windows is. They’re not going to replace the fence because as far as they’re concerned, the garage now IS the boundary wall. Have you checked building regs about that window?

BaolFan · 02/01/2020 07:44

They clearly have no intention of sorting it, so you have two choices. Get your own fence panels and sort it yourself, or plant something along that part of the boundary.

Personally I'd do the latter - and go for something dense and prickly like pyracantha. It's quick growing and the wild birds love the berries on it. Available from just about every garden centre as it's common.

strawberry2017 · 02/01/2020 07:51

I agree with true PP, they out the windows there for a reason and probably have no intention of replacing the fence but are probably hoping you get bored of mentioning it.

Love the idea of sending in the whores Grin

IHateBlueLights · 02/01/2020 07:57

I agree. They never had any intention of replacing the panels - hence the windows.

Put up your own panels and make them high enough to block out all the light.

citychick · 02/01/2020 07:57

OP if the extended garage rinds down the boundary line, were you not shown plans before it was built?
Even if it comes under permitted development. So you'd have seen that there would have been over looking windows?

Surely after a build they are meant to make good once all is finished?

ToBreatheAgain · 02/01/2020 07:57

Love the idea of sending in the whores too. Disappointed I can't vote for that option.

On a more serious note I'd check local council regulations regarding fences and windows that overlook neighbours and see where you stand legally.

billy1966 · 02/01/2020 08:02

Also agree. The windows were deliberately put in. Why would they now want a fence placed in front of the window.

Extremely cheeky to place the windows on your side of your garden.

Check it out. They don't care about the boundary or respect your right to privacy.

lowlandLucky · 02/01/2020 08:08

Plant bushes along the length of their gatage that will block the window. Why didnt you object to the window overlooking your garden ?

hazell42 · 02/01/2020 08:09

And how exactly is the fact that you live in a £700,000 house relevant?
Or that it is a "naice area"?
Did you think that only poor people have shitty neighbours?
Poor you

Leflic · 02/01/2020 08:29

I thought the fact the house is relatively expensive meant that details like fencing need to be up to standard. With a cheap do upper it’s not such an issue.

MarinaBettina · 02/01/2020 08:29

I'd make a tableau of fishing gnomes, a windmill and wishing well outside their window, they'll soon want to screen it.

Ocomeocomeimaginaryfleas · 02/01/2020 09:25

Don’t forget to chuck in a few whores.

Rubyupbeat · 02/01/2020 09:43

I couldn't be bothered and would get it done myself, lol. My DH would probably see his solicitor.
And no, it's not a boast 700 grand for a house, that would buy an apartment here......

imamum21 · 02/01/2020 09:53

do you have a small dog that will have access to their garden? if not borrow one, im sure once its done the toilet a few times in their garden the fence will be sorted. if you sort it yourself then they can claim you damaged more etc as its their fence

GiveHerHellFromUs · 02/01/2020 09:56

@Ocomeocomeimaginaryfleas a happy compromise...

Whatdayisit2 · 02/01/2020 09:58

They can't see the boundary of the garage is in the way and they don't want to block their windows. Call them out on it or replace it yourselves I'm afraid

MaggieFS · 02/01/2020 10:02

Did the garage extension need planning permission?

fastliving · 02/01/2020 10:13

I agree put up your own fencing inside but as close the the boundary as you can.
I would paint it black to absorb the light on their side too, as they obviously have purposely put in the windows and have no intention of repair my the fencing.
I quite like the dog idea too!

TouYube · 02/01/2020 12:43

I’m loving the idea of sex workers on the boundary line, but parking is already a problem and the bus service isn’t great, so how would they get here?

Re the value of the houses - it was simply to make the point that they can afford to fix the fence. It was in no way a statement about anything else other than that.

The fence was damaged in April. Yes April.

DH works from home so there is someone here almost all the time and he has refused every single parcel and delivery for them, and taken in everyone else’s. it’s that kind of good will that they’ve jettisoned. It’s a such a “fuck you” attitude.

Planning regs here say we can do 2m along the boundary line apart from where it directly abuts the road, where it must be 1m.

They’ve said “we know we have to get it done” and then didn’t do it. Arses.
