About Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Fags?!

FagAsh · 01/01/2020 11:08

I am a big stinky old smoker. I’ve never quit for more than 2 years. I smoke about 6 a day and love every one. Honestly it’s really pathetic

Anyyyyway, I was prescribing Prozac for severe PMT (PMDD)

And within a week; I’ve just stopped being remotely bothered..... I’ve just stopped almost as though I forgot about it. And this is over new year when I’ve been drinking a bit! I’ve also gone off food a bit but I knew about that already

AIBU to think that Prozac has actually turned off the faggy switch in my brain? Anyone else??

OP posts:
JellyfishandShells · 01/01/2020 12:44

Actually, it’s also used commonly here to mean effort or exhaustion ie ‘ It was such a fag, I couldn’t be bothered’ or ‘ It was too much, I was really fagged out’

A faggot
is also a slightly archaic word for a bundle of kindling - still used though .
We’ve stopped using fag as the word for younger pupils being used as quasi servants in boarding schools , along with the practice - though it might help to know if it if you read older literature ,

Hark, is that the the sound of Sarah’s head exploding ?

Ginfordinner · 01/01/2020 12:45

Wow. This thread has become quite entertaining.

If I was posting on an American based forum I would make sure I was sensitive to local word usage, and would keep my outrage to myself if local terms were politically incorrect where I live.

Goes off to get some popcorn.

PencilsInSpace · 01/01/2020 12:48

but why can't they use a different term for the food?

Because it's our fucking food and it's our fucking word, that's why.

Is it really too much to ask that you quit with the cultural imperialism?

KC225 · 01/01/2020 12:48

Got to be honest OP I think your 'About Prozac and Fags' would make an excellent album title for the person/band.

Good to see a positive side effect. Well done and a happy new year.

About Prozac (Fluoxetine) and Fags?!
Cornettoninja · 01/01/2020 12:52

@SarahNade if you stopped trying to preach from your pulpit for a second and maybe get some perspective on the world and it’s many, many cultures and intricacies you may find you have more meaningful discussions and impact on people. I hope you never realise what the Spanish word (still in use) for black is .... or crack on with the trolling if that’s what floats your boat!

@FagAsh, most addictions are self medicating for other problems. There’s not much about a nicotine addiction other than the nice feeling when you relieve it (same for gambling - there’s no real ‘high’ or mind altering state’). If your current medication is serving those needs then it’s great you have found yourself not needing an unhealthy crutch.

It might be worth getting a vape or some other Low nicotine product just to keep in reserve if you do get hit with a craving so you don’t feel tempted to go back on the fags if you want to continue off them.

NoBlueXmasLightsAllowed · 01/01/2020 12:52

And the first award of the year for spectacularly and sanctimoniously missing the point goes to.... That weird Sarah person!

Orangeblossom78 · 01/01/2020 12:54

Back on topic, I think it has been used in the past to help with binge eating (prozac). It is a stimulating anti d

Good for you if it helps, might help you feel better as well being free of cigs (and save money too)

Orangeblossom78 · 01/01/2020 12:56

There is some research in this, here www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15764422

Although it did not influence smoking cessation, it says "fluoxetine may moderate withdrawal symptoms" Interesting.

Mabelface · 01/01/2020 12:56

Read it, good about the prozac. I'm off for a fag Wink

Orangeblossom78 · 01/01/2020 12:57

Also..."Our results, however, clearly favor the use of fluoxetine if weight gain is a major clinical obstacle to smoking cessation."

well that ties in with the stuff I read on binge eating as well, it can be a bit of an appetite suppressant also.

Cornettoninja · 01/01/2020 12:58

Well the medication they prescribe for smoking cessation is actually an anti-depressant. Zyaban is it?

TimeAfterTimeAfter · 01/01/2020 13:04

why can't they use a different term for the food?

Because that's what the food is called. It's what the word means.

How about we'll consider rewriting our language just as soon as you lot stop talking about fanny packs?

Teedeepie · 01/01/2020 13:05

Hi OP. Have been on Prozac myself and sadly it never helped me with the smoking but good for you.

@SarahNade are you also going to get the name of a summit in Massachusetts changed for your cause????

Some medication can have interesting side-effects. Dopamine products prescribed to people with Parkinson's disease may cause the patient taking them to develop ICDs like kleptomania, compulsive gambling or even pyromania.

Esspee · 01/01/2020 13:13

@FagAsh I’m so glad you have found help to kick your fag addiction (which was the cause of my mother’s death). This New Year looks like the start of a new you. Best of luck.
As for the derail.....I have been shocked to hear my D-I-L use words like fanny in front of her children while objecting to me discussing pussy cats with my granddaughters. It caused me to understand that countries which supposedly speak the same language do, in fact, have major differences in meaning for some words. So here, in the UK, we walk on the pavement whilst in the US that is where you drive your cars. Once you get the message please remember that the language is called English. There is no such language as American and for what it is worth the only people I have heard using the word nigger in the last 50 years have been black Americans.

ZebraOwl · 01/01/2020 13:14

@FagAsh That’s awesome: congratulations on the unexpected side effect; & hope the fluoxetine helps more generally.

@SarahNade
This is a UK-based forum used by members from elsewhere. The expectation that US cultural & linguistic imperialism be the rule as it is elsewhere is unreasonable: why would people start using the Americanism smokes over the term that they use in everyday speech simply because in the US & some other countries it has a different - admittedly offensive - meaning?

People go into shops & buy both fags & faggots; kindling wood gets bundled into faggots; people have fag breaks; they discuss giving up fags with HCPs at all levels; they are words that are universally used & accepted. Trying to police the language of another nation because the US decided to use the same word as a slur is beyond absurd; and the comparison with the N-word is beyond offensive. Oh & if we’re throwing around the “ooh, someone close to me” I’ve no idea what names were used when my friend’s boyfriend had his head beaten in with an iron bar leaving him with brain damage & - unsurprisingly - PTSD, other than “not fag”.

I totally get that it can be startling to hear. Nonetheless, flouncing about demanding people not say it is ridiculous. How about we stop pointing at people because in some cultures that’s offensive (you only point at things)? Have you gone onto all the French language fora you can find to demand they never again mention taking a shower? Welsh carrots are controversial in the MN debate on using archaic terms to do with IQ. (Pretty sure if I googled I’d get an enormous list of Things In Other Languages That Sound Offensive In English But Totally Aren’t...)

Utterly. Fecking. Ridiculous. Honestly, you’re making an absolute holy show of yourself.

TimeAfterTimeAfter · 01/01/2020 13:15

I personally am deeply offended that US citizens repeatedly use a racial slur term pertaining to the downtrodden and oppressed people of Scotland (Jock) and therefore demand that all sporting discourse be revised accordingly.

WorraLiberty · 01/01/2020 13:19

I once had an Australian woman slide her feet into my thongs.

I never went back to that beach again, I can tell you! Grin

Fleurdebleurgh · 01/01/2020 13:19

I've been an ex smoker for about 3 years...and now really fancy a fag. Cheers MN Hmm

MoonlightMistletoe · 01/01/2020 13:27

I used to take Prozac however in the end had a medication change. Seems it's really agreeing with you OP killing two birds with one stone happy days!

InsertFunnyUsername · 01/01/2020 13:42

Well done OP. Giving up smoking is so hard for most, so enjoy it being easy.

I had my last fag when I started taking Mirtazapine, like you I just couldn't be bothered and realised I was reminding myself to smoke. Weird!

HarrietThePi · 01/01/2020 13:48

Wow that's great op. I was prescribed fluxoetine a while back but it was making me sleep so much. I did smoke less but only because I was asleep for the majority of the day. I stopped taking it because I couldn't deal with the sleeping.

Interestedwoman · 01/01/2020 13:53

YANBU. A similar SSRI or SSRI-like med is used to help people give up smoking.

Also, you could've been using smoking to try and help yourself feel better, and as the med hopefully gradually helps you feel better. you won't have to do that as much anymore.

Make the most of it and try and perma-give up. Wishing you a happy, more smoke free (and therefore wealthier) new year! xxx
