Took DD to an abandoned Medieval village this morning. Nothing much there other than old foundations, info boards and the ruins of an old church dating back to 1200s.

When we got to the church there was a huge family there with kids running in and out of the church, slamming the (massive solid wood) door, climbing in and out of the windows screaming and running wild. DD asked if she could go and play in the church and I said no as it was very very old and needed looking after. DD obviously replied “but they are!” So I said “yes well they shouldn’t be”. Unbeknown to me one of their relatives was right behind me and asked if I had a problem with children playing. I said “not at all but I don’t agree with letting them slam the door and climb through the windows. There isn’t much left of the church as it is, we should be protecting it”. The woman then said “the church has stood here since the 11th century yet you think a group of small children can knock it down?”

At this point I tried to end the convo and said “knock it down, no. Damage it further, maybe. Bear in mind this is also a burial ground. Anyway, sorry if I offended you, I would just hate to see it get damaged”. I then started walking away. She followed and said I was out of order and it’s a shame my child isn’t allowed to play!!

WIBU?? I wasn’t rude, just didn’t agree with using an ancient ruin as a climbing frame!! But then I am a massive history geek so maybe I shouldn’t have said anything?

Agree OP, you definitely were NBU.

On a similar note we recently stayed at a hotel (mid market chain, not posh but a good few steps up from Premier Inn) and during breakfast in the beautifully furnished dining room a few families had clearly come straight from the pool for breakfast and their kids were wandering around the buffet barefoot Confused. Just grim. Some people are just disrespectful where ever they are.

Getitwright · 01/01/2020 11:01

My NY resolution is to try not to educate Planks. So, anyone who is disrespectful to property or people, my first approach will be polite and informative. Gloves will be off after that.......

I like the sound of that approach Get Smile

Yep, time to install respect back into our society, regardless of sex, age, culture or ability. You only get one life, who wants to live in fear, stress and nastiness, all because someone else is a bully, a criminal, badly behaved? Aim high, keep the love and friendship flowing, support the weak, and don’t rely on others to sort your issues out. Smile

Other family were wrong but I do feel sorry for all the children inc ops been dragged to boring ruins.

But not everyone thinks they are boring, I loved visiting 'boring ruins' as a child and still do now. Shock horror: Different people like different things!

tellmewhenthespaceshiplandscoz · 01/01/2020 11:39

Ruins are only boring if you lack imagination and curiosity.

Mymycherrypie · 01/01/2020 11:44

It’s not just respect, it’s than a wall will crush your precious rat bag when it comes down on them.

We have ruins here from James 1’s time that are crumbling, I am just waiting for the day when an archway some oik has climbed comes down and crushes his skull. You can see the brick dust as they climb up it.

Getitwright · 01/01/2020 11:46

I find dragging around shopping centres mind numbingly boring. There are seldom many small independent businesses offering anything different, just the same mass produced stuff.
Walking in the footsteps of others, imagining their lives, their battles, their loves and hates is just so special, doesn’t matter if they are Kings or Queens, peasants or servants. History teaches us so much, for those who take the time to think about it.
I accept we are all different. But still need respect

ScreamedAtTheMichelangelo · 01/01/2020 13:11

I couldn’t believe that 4% actually said you were BR and then I read @MintyMabel‘s comments and another part of my faith in humanity died.

OP - thank god for people like you in the world. You’re doing parenting right. Cake

YetAnotherSpartacus · 01/01/2020 13:32

Bollocks. It is about choices. “Right and wrong” is subjective. It is incredibly arrogant to suggest you are the one getting it right and others are wrong

Right and wrong is subjective???? Riiiiiiight.

Note to self ... don’t try to educate planks.

MintyMabel · 01/01/2020 14:07

I read @MintyMabel‘s comments and another part of my faith in humanity died.

Oh don’t be so melodramatic. Humanity isn’t threatened by kids clambering on ruins. 🙄

Right and wrong is subjective???? Riiiiiiight.

Of course it is. If you are catholic, abortion is wrong. If you are Jewish, eating Pork is wrong. Half the threads here are based on people disagreeing on what is right and wrong. Only a plank can’t see that.

OP - thank god for people like you in the world. You’re doing parenting right

Translation : you agree with me therefore you must be doing it right. Anyone who disagrees with me is a bad parent.

Getitwright · 01/01/2020 16:13

Another translation could be that they are my children and I will raise them as I like/want.

ScreamedAtTheMichelangelo · 01/01/2020 16:36

@MintyMabel I was going to argue with your translation but then I thought about it and my brain nearly exploded.

I mean. We're talking about children using ancient monuments as playgrounds. I almost can't believe I'm having to say this, but surely if you think that's OK, it's bad parenting. Am I on another planet?

Mymycherrypie · 01/01/2020 16:44

Hilarious that anyone would think a fragile site would be protected mintymabel Hundreds of normal walls fall down every year. Building sites drop things on people. A woman at Kew was killed by a branch. Miles of coastline doesn’t have life guards. Cliffs fall down. If you don’t want to die in a stupid way, don’t do a stupid thing. OP’s child could have been hit by falling debris from those idiots climbing on it. Safety trumps shaming stupid people.
