Dog howls to a couple of different songs, without fail.

Should we play them for him or avoid? Theres no doubt, had him years and these two songs set him off. Anyone know if it's something he enjoys or something that distresses him? Haven't put them on on purpose but maybe I should? Normally I can see if he likes something, but with this he really isn't giving away any clues except the howling. Doesn't look upset. Is it heaven or torture?

My step moms dog used to howl to pasty Klein it was funny for five seconds

My toddler howls to ABBA and has confirmed verbally that she likes it - any help?

LennyPugGoat · 30/12/2019 20:53

Pug goat bolts up off his comfy spot every time he hears the theme tune to Corrie and Emmerdale,

He leaps off the sofa, it’s really annoying so I feel your pain. I’m guessing he doesn’t like it as he does like sleeping and chooses to bolt at the TV over sleeping...

DNR · 30/12/2019 20:57

Really isn't often enough to be a nuisance, so really no pain. Just wonder if anyone knows if they like it or not.

My dog leaps up and howls away as soon as he hears the opening notes to the theme tune for The Good, the Bad and the Ugly.
It's surprising how often it's used as background music in films and TV shows when there's a scene of enemies facing up to each other for a confrontation.
I , too, have always wondered whether he likes it, or whether it distresses him.

ferretface · 30/12/2019 21:04

Our dog also does this at certain planes, I've also heard him do it to a fellow collie who he really wanted to play with but which ran away - on that basis I think it's a plaintive "come here" request but not real distress.

PhilomenaChristmasPie · 30/12/2019 21:06

No idea, but our dog when I was growing up used to howl every time I played the melodica.

Elphame · 30/12/2019 21:08

Mine howls every time the landline rings. It has an old fashioned analogue rotary phone attached and there must be something he hears in the bell.

HannaYeah · 30/12/2019 21:11

Can you put it on in another room and see if he comes in to listen to it?

One of my cats will come sit with me when I play certain types of music!

Ohyesiam · 30/12/2019 21:13

Howling dogs generally look like they are enjoying themselves to me. It’s like a “ ooh, this is the thing I like to join in with” response.
I don’t claim to understand dogs, I’m a cat person, but that’s what it’s always looked like to me.

My Dachshund used to howl to Groove Armada's I See You Baby (the Fatboy Slim version). As it was used to be in an ad for Renault every time it came on (at least once a day) he'd wake up, jump out, face still crumpled and howl with indignation. To this day I don't know what in that song outraged him so much

PastTippingPoint · 30/12/2019 21:18

Growing up our family dog used to "sing" whenever I practiced the clarinet, she could howl in tune as I did my scales Grin. She didn't seem distressed, she would actively run towards me playing!

Pinkarsedfly · 30/12/2019 21:20

I one had a cat that adored ‘You’ve Got A Friend’ by James Taylor.

Even if I sang it, she’d come and find me and purr and squirm with happiness. I buried her with the handwritten lyrics.

RIP Polly.

RuggerHug · 30/12/2019 21:23

Do they seem distressed in any way when it stops? Ours loved the ice cream van music and Coronation Street theme tune..

DNR · 30/12/2019 21:27

No clues. He doesn't look upset or relieved when the music stops.

I don't know op but this thread has put a smile on my face Grin

Lilopup · 30/12/2019 22:35

My mums dog does the same, he howls to George Ezra and Jess Glynn

SheSnapsThenSheFarts · 31/12/2019 08:31

@Pinkarsedfly that made me well up a bit

NurseButtercup · 31/12/2019 08:50

There are so many hilarious videos on YouTube with dogs "singing" to music, I would predict that your dog is happy. Grin
