Washing hair before going to hairdressers

I’m off to the hairdressers this afternoon. I last washed my hair on Friday and usually do it every 3-4 days. Yesterday I’d dry shampooed as I’d put an oil in for taming on Friday. Options are I either was it before I go or dry shampoo again. I really can’t be bothered washing it to have it washed again after my colour though.

Friday? It's Monday,go and wash your hair!

RhodaDendron · 30/12/2019 09:49

I’m sure a hairdresser will be along to advise shortly, but I have a feeling it’s best to wash out dry shampoo before having a colour put in. I know what you mean though, it’s annoying.

ClownsandCowboys · 30/12/2019 09:49

I never bother, I would leave it. Will dry shampoo be OK with the colour? Just leave it and let them wash it. I never wash mine unnecessarily, and often leave it an extra day if going to hair dresser.

Like you I only wash every 3-4 days as have thick hair.

chesterfuckingdrorrs · 30/12/2019 09:49

I'd wash it, especially if I was having it coloured, from speaking with friends about this previously I know I'm in the minority.

PaprikaPringle · 30/12/2019 09:49

My hairdresser likes to put colour onto clean hair. If I were you, I'd wash it before you go to get rid of the oil and dry shampoo residue.

AintNobodyHereButUsChickens · 30/12/2019 09:50

My hairdresser has always told me never to wash my hair on the same day before having colour put in. Personally I'd leave it.

SinglePringle · 30/12/2019 09:50

Leave it. If you wash it, your scalp will be more sensitive to the colour. It could sting a lot. My hairdresser tells me to leave it.

GruciusMalfoy · 30/12/2019 09:51

If you're bleaching it I wouldn't wash it without asking the hairdresser first.

PerfectionistProcrastinator · 30/12/2019 09:54

I’d not bother washing it. I’ve been when my hair needs a wash before and apologised to my hairdresser. I remember him once telling me it’s best not to wash it before a colour. I don’t remember why though.

Mojitomogul · 30/12/2019 09:55

I'd leave it! Dry shampoo shouldnt affect the colour. I only wash my hair every 4 or so days, its day 3 now and still looks freshly washed tbh.

Flipper1234 · 30/12/2019 09:56

Fairly sure I’ve also been told it’s easier to colour hair that isn’t freshly washed but maybe call the salon to ask?

motherheroic · 30/12/2019 10:03

@MrsPelligrinoPetrichor Not everyone likes to strip their hair every two days.

Averyyounggrandmaofsix · 30/12/2019 10:07

I would wash it because of dry shampoo. I generally wash my hair twice a week and would have washed it yesterday so it was clean but not too clean.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 30/12/2019 10:38

motherheroic and I am one of them but the OP's hair is sufficiently greasy enough to use dry shampoo and clearly needs attention today- either a wash or more dry shampoo. I think it's fair enough not to expect a hairdresser to have to deal with such dirty hair frankly.

Smashtastick · 30/12/2019 10:49

Op if give it a quick wash. If be worried the dry shampoo and oil might effect the colour?

Emeraldshamrock · 30/12/2019 10:52

You can't wash it the day of a colour. It's to late now. I always wash it the day before I wouldn't go with a greasy head. Mine gets greasy quickly and get washed most days.

dontcallmeduck · 30/12/2019 10:53

Hair washed, after a brush it definitely needed a wash. I’m sure the hairdresser will be happy

Nice one 😉

Roominmyhouse · 30/12/2019 10:59

It’s better not to wash your hair before having it coloured mainly because your natural oils can help reduce scalp irritation if you are having a full head. That said it’s really unpleasant to colour someone’s hair when it hasn’t been washed for days. Hair that’s not been washed for a couple of days has a really distinct smell and it’s often not very nice!

EntirelyAnonymised · 30/12/2019 11:02

You can’t wash on the day of colour

What a load of nonsense. It might not be preferred to wash immediately before the colour but I’ve always had to wash my hair every day and that means washing my hair on the day of colour of colour is later in the day and I’ve got things to do in the morning. The colour has always taken and developed absolutely fine.

NearlyOutedMyself · 30/12/2019 11:25

I always wash my hair the day before or the morning of a cut or colour. They just dry it off properly if it's damp.

Nanny0gg · 30/12/2019 11:27

My hairdresser has always told me never to wash my hair on the same day before having colour put in. Personally I'd leave it.

^^This.

Preferably (for the future) wash it the day before.

Emeraldshamrock · 30/12/2019 15:59

It is not the development of the colour that is affected.
The pores on your scalp open with warm water. Applying a tint directly into the scalp can burn your head.
If you're having foils the hair may be to soft to stick the foil, again foils can cause a burn if they leak onto an open pore head.
