To take the DC on holiday to Dubai?

FudgeBrownie2019 · 29/12/2019 14:16

We have two DC, 14 and 9. We've travelled fairly regularly with them but haven't ever done anywhere like Dubai/UAE. DH has found some summer holidays in those areas but I have a little weird feeling about going there - no idea why, no rational reason, I'm just uneasy but can't really put it into words.

Would you go there with DC? Have you been there with DC? Is it somewhere you'd be willing to visit?

@Icedpurple They dont have Zero rights. Their embassies are not blind to these things, and have a strict protocol in place. Does it happen yes, but is it the wild west ..no

IcedPurple · 30/12/2019 18:14

They dont have Zero rights.

If they're isolated in their homes, with no phones or other way of making contact with the outside world, then in practice they do.

The abuses inflicted on migrant workers - especially women - are very well-known and have been documented by human rights groups for many years. Just because you, as I (correct me if I'm wrong) white Westerner got to enjoy a luxury lifestyle doesn't mean it hasn't got an appalling human rights record.

Penguin1700 · 30/12/2019 18:22

They are not spotless, UAE standard is probably similar to USA/China rather than UK. However, countries like Nepal, Philippines do checks on the incoming housemaids (and some have ongoing checks) which helps. Does it mean that the UAE itself should do more.. yes they should, but they have made progress, and things are far worse (and similar) to what you describe in Saudi

Frankly there would be no more people coming to replace them if such terrible things were happening to their predecessors.

When your only argument is that 'other places are worse' you know you're onto a loser. One of the richest countries in the world should be able to enforce decent conditions for all its workers, not just white Westerners making 5 times their salaries (and tax-free too!) Why is it the responsibility of the women's home countries to check on the households, if that's even possible? Shouldn't the host country be doing that?

Penguin1700 · 30/12/2019 18:48

I dont know of a single country that can rest easy.

IcedPurple · 30/12/2019 19:03

Well, that's a complete cop out of an 'argument' if ever I've heard one.

Sure, no country is perfect but some countries have much much worse human rights records than others. And the country you're enthusiasticaly praising is one of those.

The kids would have an amazing time in Dubai. There is so much to do. But going for the summer holidays is a no no. You wouldn't be able to go outside as it would be too hot. I would suggest Feb half term. Very latest Easter holidays. Amazing water parks, desert safaris, ifly Dubai, Burj khalifa. I could go on. The kids would love it. And it is safe. I have never felt safer on holiday in fact. And beautifully clean. Go.

Twillow · 30/12/2019 21:15

I don't fancy it at all but my children have been with relatives and it sounded very clean, apparently extremely safe and they loved it.
I do not work for their tourist board!!

HulksPurplePanties · 31/12/2019 06:58

My friend went and couldn't swim in the sea at all due to the influx of poisonous squid and where beaches were clear of jellyfish the sea pollution was so bad it you couldn't go in.

Absolute bullshit. Poisonous squid? You're joking right?

HulksPurplePanties · 31/12/2019 07:01

If the United States can't do it, why do you assume the UAE can.

If they're isolated in their homes, with no phones or other way of making contact with the outside world, then in practice they do.&

While this does happen, it is not the norm, and it happens everywhere in the world. Sadly women are trafficked into domestic servitude across the world. You read cases of it in the US & the UK all the time.

OneDay10 · 31/12/2019 07:12

I've just returned from there yesterday. It was a really lovely holiday. There is just so much to do we couldnt fit it all in a week. My ds is almost 4 and he loved it.

The shit I saw in construction areas of Singapore and KL would singe your hair. I am so interested in this. The orthodox Jewish community is riddled with abuse, forced relationships, women not being allowed to do pretty much anything except work so their men don't have to (wearing wigs becUde they are not allowed to Shor their hair) and I have seen first hand the abuse in London where I grew up. Street signs outside schools banning women from driving etc. Not a sausage. Give you lot a rich Arab and you think you can just bully them, spreading actual lies with gay abandon. You are horrible and have zero idea of the world. The Guardian is a newspaper, not a manual.

FizzyIce · 31/12/2019 09:56

Bully them ?!
Who the fuck has been bullying a rich Arab?
Are you on drugs ?

Mookie81 · 31/12/2019 10:10

What's the weather like in Feb half term?

HulksPurplePanties · 31/12/2019 10:11

Should be mid to high 20's. Chilly in the morning and evenings (say mid to high teens).

Lippy1234 · 31/12/2019 10:17

I’ve been in Feb and it was good weather, ideal for waterparks and sightseeing. It does get a bit nippy in the evening.

onioncrumble · 31/12/2019 11:52

Yes tweetypie, I'm on drugs Hmm sat her in PF Changs in my nice safe country, chomping away on an E.

Mookie81 · 31/12/2019 12:54

Is the Frame worth doing or not?

Womenwotlunch · 31/12/2019 12:59

I know that MN hates Dubai, but I love it and it’s very popular with people around the world
However, I wouldn’t go in Summer, it’s extremely hot . People from Dubai leave Dubai in the summer

In all fairness to the poster who mentioned poisonous squid - there's a breed of extremely toxic octopus who frequent the Indian Ocean and have been known to holiday in Dubai just for a bit of a change . They're not big at all and could be mistaken size wise for a squid. There is no known antidote to the venom.

Jellyfish? Surely thats par for the course when you venture into the sea.

Pollution? I cant say I've come across any where I swim when in Dubai but thats not to say there isnt any.

Yes, but in 13 years I've never heard of them shutting down a beach?

Nanamilly · 31/12/2019 13:29

Yes, but in 13 years I've never heard of them shutting down a beach?

Maybe the family were too afraid to swim and the beach wasn't actually shut down.

HulksPurplePanties · 31/12/2019 13:31

Nanamilly I suppose that's possible, but hardly Dubai's fault?

Nanamilly · 31/12/2019 13:34

I completely agree with you and I thought my post was clearer.
