6 week old with temperature, Gp or A&E?

I know not AIBU, but waned quick replies.

6 week old Dd, had a difficult night crying, unsettled and she has a temp of 38, it's not going down although she's still feeding.
Nhs website recommends Gp with temp in babies under 3 months and I've phoned out of hours and I'm waiting a call back. Her dad thinks we just take her to A&E now though as she's not getting any cooler and there's nothing we can do/give her. Feeling a bit useless and unsure what to do. Been waiting 20 minutes for dr so far and it took about 15 to get through when we phoned.
No rash or anything but she's crying and unsettled, feeding on and off and the temp not going down.

I’d go to a and e with a baby that small. They really won’t mind checking them over and you will have peace of mind.

Soubriquet · 28/12/2019 09:47

A&E for sure

Nurses and doctors would much rather be safer than sorry with newborns

sadwithkiddies · 28/12/2019 09:47

Gp your call would have been triaged and they will call you back

Bloodylegoeverywhere · 28/12/2019 09:48

I'd suggest a&e for peace of mind. I was told once if you are concerned enough to ask for advice then seek help. Good luck and hope all is ok!

icantfind · 28/12/2019 09:48

Skin to skin can help. Your body temp will help regulate hers.

Minionbums · 28/12/2019 09:48

I’d wait for the call back. When this happened to us he said it was a good sign that she was unsettled and crying - as opposed to quiet and unresponsive - and the fact she is still feeding is good too. It’s frightening when they’re so little.

orangejuicer · 28/12/2019 09:48

A&E, just go.

Tink2007 · 28/12/2019 09:48

With a baby that small I would go to A&E - 111 when they call back will only advise the same.

Doje · 28/12/2019 09:49

111 always send you to A&E with a baby that old... you might as well head there!

mrbob · 28/12/2019 09:52

A&E. Likely to be admitted even if just for observation but probably needs bloods and a urine test etc

custardbear · 28/12/2019 09:53

Personally I'd go to A&E - 111 will probably call you en route anyway

AppropriateAdult · 28/12/2019 09:54

GP here, OP; babies under 3 months with a temp of 38 or higher need to go to A&E. I wouldn’t delay any longer.

Ohnoherewego62 · 28/12/2019 09:54

Yeah I'd take her to a and e aswell! Good luck. Hope little one is ok!

negomi90 · 28/12/2019 09:56

A&e with a bag, expect to be admitted. Sometimes 111 gets this wrong as fever advice in babies under 3 months old is radically different from any other age group.

GirlOnIt · 28/12/2019 09:56

She's had skin on skin, pretty much all night. Going to just go to A&E. If doctors phone and say different we can go there instead.

Stupid question, do I just put her in the car in her sleep suit or still put a cardigan, hat etc on? I just can't think straight

OP posts:
Sunshinegirl82 · 28/12/2019 09:59

Babies don't need wrapping up in the car especially not with a temp, put her in in her sleepsuit and take a blanket for her.

I hope she's better soon.

ooonicorn · 28/12/2019 09:59

Just sleepsuit with a blanket on top till the car warms up. Sitting with a 4 month old that's had a temp all night so feel your pain

MrsIH · 28/12/2019 09:59

yes Dress her as you would normally

PinkDaffodil2 · 28/12/2019 09:59

A&E under 3 months with a fever (have worked in GP, paeds ED and 111 out of hours)

Tucobenedicto · 28/12/2019 10:00

Wash her down with lukewarm water with some vinegar in it...my mum used to do that to us when we were young...it defo works...Will bring her temp down

ballyboy · 28/12/2019 10:01

Absolutely A&e. And as soon as possible. Newborns should not have high temps.

Skin to skin will not bring a newborns temperature down!!!

ballyboy · 28/12/2019 10:02

Omg some of the advice on here is shocking!

MrsIH · 28/12/2019 10:02

NHS advice is NOT to undress or sponge down and also not to cover with lots of layers or bedding so that’s why I say dress her to go out as you would normally. I’d put a blanket over her in the car until the car is warm.

Sunshinegirl82 · 28/12/2019 10:02

Current advice is not to sponge children down as it causes shivering which can increase core temperature.

A&E is the place, prepare to be admitted if only for observation. They don't take chances with small babies.

ballyboy · 28/12/2019 10:04

I'd just put her in her pjs with a blanket over her.
