6 week old with temperature, Gp or A&E?

GirlOnIt · 28/12/2019 09:44

I know not AIBU, but waned quick replies.

6 week old Dd, had a difficult night crying, unsettled and she has a temp of 38, it's not going down although she's still feeding.
Nhs website recommends Gp with temp in babies under 3 months and I've phoned out of hours and I'm waiting a call back. Her dad thinks we just take her to A&E now though as she's not getting any cooler and there's nothing we can do/give her. Feeling a bit useless and unsure what to do. Been waiting 20 minutes for dr so far and it took about 15 to get through when we phoned.
No rash or anything but she's crying and unsettled, feeding on and off and the temp not going down.

A&e if that small. An A&E doctor once told me that no doctor is going to think badly if a patent who is worried out their child’s health and brings them in. He said he’d rather see 1000 cautious parents than 1 child who is too ill to treat anymore.

Sssneks · 28/12/2019 10:05

@Tucobenedicto

A PP who is a doctor has already told her that she needs to go to A&E and you're telling her to douse her baby in watered down vinegar instead???

Please don't be so irresponsible.

PrayingandHoping · 28/12/2019 10:08

My baby had cold symptoms and checked by GP couple of Fridays ago and then Sunday night got a temp of 38, called 111 and we were sent to A&E. she had Bronchiolitis and was admitted for 10 days including 4 in intensive care:

We were advised to strip her to a vest top while we waited for the call back. But dressed as normal when we went to A&E

Hope she's ok:

foxatthewindow · 28/12/2019 10:10

Definitely A&E, and take a bag for you too if it’s a long journey. In a baby that small it’s likely they will do a full sepsis work up and start IV antibiotics. You might be there a few days. Good luck!

Inhismemory · 28/12/2019 10:10

Wash her down with lukewarm water with some vinegar in it...my mum used to do that to us when we were young...it defo works...Will bring her temp down

This is bad advice.

Op I hope you're on your way already. Thanks

Puddlelane123 · 28/12/2019 10:14

A&E, no question. They need to rule out sepsis and will want to commence IV antibiotics speedily.

ragged · 28/12/2019 10:16

Let us know what happens, OP?
I hope the blood taking isn't too painful for her.

Mrsgoggingsthe3rd · 28/12/2019 10:19

A&E, you’ll wait for a call back and they’ll send you there anyway. They won’t see you at OOH or Walk in Centre, in my experience under 6 months they ask you to go to A&E.

No sponging down or skin to skin. Light layers.

Namechanger23455 · 28/12/2019 10:20

Hope she’s okay op!! Xx

Soubriquet · 28/12/2019 10:20

Wtaf?!! Xmas Hmm

Are you a medical professional?! No!
So don’t give stupid advice like this

BananaChocolateLump · 28/12/2019 10:23

Horrendously bad advice! OP I am sure you aren't stupid but please don't do this!!

TheFaerieQueene · 28/12/2019 10:23

Can anyone explain what luke warm water with vinegar in it is going to do?? I’ve heard some bat shit crazy advice on here before now, but that takes the biscuit!

Mishappening · 28/12/2019 10:23

Vinegar!! - FFS!!!

Hope you have got to A and E and baby has been seen. Good luck. Always worrying when a tiny baby is like this. You are doing the right thing; even if all you get is reassurance - that is worth a lot!

tmh88 · 28/12/2019 10:26

Hope your little one is ok. A&E is the best place for you. Flowers

Also washing a baby with vinegar?!? Hmm I think this is the most crackers thing I have ever read on Mumsnet Shock

trixiebelden77 · 28/12/2019 10:29

The concern is that small babies struggle to mount an immune response and so a fever must be taken seriously.

Every hospital I’ve worked in for 15 years has performed a septic workup on every single baby under twelve weeks who has a fever.

Please ignore people talking out of their arses in this. They are entirely, absolutely, too ignorant to offer any advice at all.

HeyDuggeesCakeBadge · 28/12/2019 10:33

OP I'm so glad you are taking baby to A&E - it's exactly the right place. I really hope everything is okay Flowers

Futureplanning · 28/12/2019 10:39

Glad you're on your way to A&E, you're doing the right thing. I hope your little one is okay.

Tucobenedicto · 28/12/2019 10:44

I think if all you smart arses Google "does vinegar bring a temperature down" you will see that it can help in the short term...yes it may be an old wives tale but it certainly worked for us...the op wanted quick advice and of course she should go to A and E...hurry up go Google....go go go.

Teachermaths · 28/12/2019 10:50

WTF is the vinegar advice?!

Good luck OP, Hope she's OK.

Inhismemory · 28/12/2019 10:53

I think I'd rather trust nhs advice than dr google. Nhs advice against stripping and sponging children down as it can actually raise core temperature even if it makes the skin feel cooler momentarily.

GirlOnIt · 28/12/2019 10:54

Thank you everyone! We're at A&E, doctor phoned just as we got in the car and I said we'd decided to take her to A&E and he agreed.
Temp when we got here was over 39 so she's been seen as urgent, just having some blood taken now but her dad is with her as I can't do needles at the best of times. She had a good scream and protest at being checked over though and the doctor said that's a good sign.

Vic49 · 28/12/2019 11:10

So glad that you're being seen urgently. Being feisty at being checked over and having bloods taken is a great sign - although not fun for you or your DH - hope everything gets sorted quickly.

IShitGlitter · 28/12/2019 11:14

Hope baby is ok.

GirlOnIt · 28/12/2019 12:24

They think it's just viral but she's still got a high temp, so they're going to keep her in for 24hrs to see how she goes.

Ds did similar at around the same age and that was just viral, although he ended up in hospital for a few days. He was quite drowsy and not feeding so it was a easy call to go straight to A&E with him. Dd was her usual self yesterday and it just seems to have come on all of a sudden, she was still feeding too, so I wasn't quite as worried as I was when Ds wouldn't.
All staff are being very lovely though and said we were right to come in.

She's currently sleeping and I've sent her dad off to find me some food, because I've just realised I haven't eaten anything all morning.

GirlOnIt · 28/12/2019 12:31

And thank you to everyone again. I think I just needed to hear that A&E wasn't overreacting. Typically couldn't get in touch with my mum and Dp's mum is of the phone an ambulance for anything type, love her to bits but she'd have me thinking it was 100X worse than it was.
