to think that if a pub has 'vegetarian roast' on the menu, costing £6.50, it will involve an actual main course and not merely consist of side vegetables?

Just got back from lunch at a local pub. They had a carvery. I asked if they had vegetarian options, they gave me a menu and I chose "vegetarian roast". I was expecting a proper main course, but what I got was 4 (cold) roast potatoes, a Yorkshire pudding, some carrots, cauliflower and sprouts.

Oh well, at least the dds had fun because the pub had a bouncy castle and play area. And the sun shone.

Sounds vile and a rip off. Did you complain ?

cylon · 26/08/2007 14:04

i would have complained.
you dont get service if you dont ask for it.

sweetkitty · 26/08/2007 14:06

I've had this before Sunday roast without the roast and they were even trying to pour gravy on my vegetables.

Rip off don't go back

harleyd · 26/08/2007 14:08

i wouldnt have paid for it!

Rachmumoftwo · 26/08/2007 14:17

Shocking! I would expect a nut roast or similar. If you are just having the veg, if anything it should be cheaper. And legally can't be advertised as vegetarian if gravy etc. contain meat products. I would complain to the brewery/company that owns pub, as it just is not on.

Blandmum · 26/08/2007 14:20

Shabby and should happen in this day and age. Vegetarianism is hardly 'new' is it?

melpomene · 26/08/2007 14:25

Dh got the food inside the pub while I looked after the dds in the garden. Dh did query it when they served up my food but they just told him that was what the "vegetarian roast" was. I didn't want to make a big complaint because we wanted to have a relaxing time in the sun with the dds.

They did also have veggie burger on the menu, which was what the dds had, so I ended up sharing some of their burger.

We won't be going back there again.

Outrageous. Write to them! Vegetarian roast ABSOLUTELY suggests something in place of the meat in the same roast meal. Otherwise it is, as you say, side orders.

Vegetarian roast potato - yum. You did check they didn't could it with the meat or with beef-fat didn't you, they don't sound terribly enlightened.

macneil · 26/08/2007 14:52

By that logic, a vegan pudding would be ice cream with the ice cream removed and the wafer left on the plate.

and a fruitarian roast would be the peas and apple sauce from a pork roast dinner!

derah · 28/08/2007 19:07

Aaargh, I would have expected this 10 years ago but ffs, society is supposed to be enlightened about we crazy veggie types these days! COMPLAIN before it happens again! Goodness me, this takes me back to the "do you have a veggie option?", "um, we've got a salad." days.
