AIBU to ask what sex isn't baby?

Savuti · 26/12/2019 23:29

I am pregnant with my second, AIBU to ask if my next baby will be the same sex as my first or more likely (anecdotally rather than scientifically) to be different.

Most sibling sets I know are the same boy/boy or girl/girl.

Do you agree? Or am I getting the opposite sex this time round?

Just for 'fun'

I am one of two girls
My MIL had 4 boys and 1 girl
I have 5 girls and 1 boy

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/12/2019 07:30

We have two lovely dds, but my sister, her daughter and DiL, and my dd, all had girl followed by boy. Dd now expecting no. 3, a dd.

Who can ever tell, though? My MiL had 4 boys. It does seem that one or the other does run in some families. A GM of mine had 5 girls, one boy, and her dd, my DM, had 3 girls and one boy.
And someone else I know had 5 boys, followed by a girl.

As someone once said, as long as it's one or the other, we'll be very happy!

My three siblings with children are all boy/girl combos. Everyone else close to me is boy girl bar one good friend and one cousin. I have two girls, trying for a third so who knows what that will be!!

ChipsAreLife · 27/12/2019 07:36

Oh and my parents had three boys and two girls so fairly equal split

TheCountessatHotelCortez · 27/12/2019 07:37

I am one of 5 girls, I have 3 girl cousins. My son was the first boy to be born in the immediate and wider family since my dad and his brother. I have 2 girls and a boy, eldest is a girl then the boy then my last was a girl

Ivebeentohellanditscalledikea · 27/12/2019 07:40

My mum had girl girl boy and I have girl boy boy.

While pregnant with my last I swore he was a girl as the pregnancy felt the same as it did with DD I even argued with the midwife when they told me he was a boy as I was so convinced he wasn't.

stellabelle · 27/12/2019 07:44

I had girl/ boy, and both of them had girl / boy. It's 50-50 every time.

Monkeytapper · 27/12/2019 07:44

I have a brother, DH has a sister, together we have a boy and a girl.......my brother has a boy and a girl and DH sister has a boy and a girl.

SuperMeerkat · 27/12/2019 07:48

@Savuti It doesn’t matter how many you ‘know’ you’ll get what you get 🤦‍♀️

olivehater · 27/12/2019 07:49

The paper posted above is interesting and makes sense. We have totally bucked it though and gone boy, girl, boy close together. If there is any correlation it by to small amount to be concerned. Most of my friends have one of each.

snapcrap · 27/12/2019 07:51

I thought this was going to be a gender neutral thread, your AIBU is worded very oddly!! I have no idea what sex your baby will be but congrats!

burninglikefire · 27/12/2019 07:52

A fair amount of work has been done on investigating whether the probability of a girl/boy depends on the previous birth. A good summary is here:

www.biorxiv.org/content/biorxiv/early/2015/11/24/031344.full.pdf

Some of the studies found no relationship between one birth and the subsequent one. However, a number of studies found that having a child of one sex did significantly increase the probability of having a child of the same sex next time round, i.e. girl girl and boy boy pairs were slightly more common than would be expected.

The key word here is slightly.

Hope that whatever you have gives you much pleasure!

Essexgirlupnorth · 27/12/2019 07:55

Out of our NCT the six that have a second child 4 had the same sex sibling and 2 had different.
Also alot of friend seem to have 2 the same.
My mum had two girls, my mother in law had two boys then a girl.
I have one girl and I am pregnant again so will see what sex this one is.

HelloDulling · 27/12/2019 07:55

Have just done a quick tot up on my fingers, and about half my friends have a mix, the other half have either all boys or all girls. So 50/50 whether you get the same again seems right in my anecdotal experience.

Catconfusion · 27/12/2019 07:59

In my friendship group there are more boy/girl combinations. It’s just down to luck. I heard if you had sex just before ovulation it’s more likely a boy and a couple of days before it’s more likely a girl. Girl sperm hangs around for longer. Boy sperm is faster but dies off quicker. It will be lovely whichever you’re having.

NearlyGranny · 27/12/2019 08:07

Third baby was a girl (grown up now) but I didn't want to know as we already had b/g twins, though we could have been told as she'd had amniocentesis testing. In labour the midwives were saying boy because of size and heart rate. I delivered kneeling and there was comment about her face being a girl's face (before I ever saw it!) between contractions. And her 'girl's face' was indeed followed by a big healthy girl body.

It's always flip a coin odds, regardless of what has gone before, though some men produce more of one sort of sperm than the other and some women seem more girl- or boy-sperm receptive at different stages of the cycle.

I loved not knowing with all of them, frankly, but now it seems everyone wants to know in advance.

Stayinyourfridge · 27/12/2019 08:09

Me - 1 girl / 4 boys!
Ex dh - 3 boys

Our kids - 3 boys

Eminybob · 27/12/2019 08:09

Thinking about all the people I know with 2 young kids, nearly all are boy/girl combos.
I have 2 boys, and I have a friend with 3 boys, but other than us there is always one of each.

I had a boy, and then got pregnant again about 5 months later... I really wanted another boy, but I was SO convinced I was having a girl... early gender scan - boy. I didn't actually believe it for ages because I was 100% sure he would be a girl Grin I just had a "girl" feeling.

They're 3 and 2 now, and are little best friends 👬

My Nana had a boy and a girl, my mum had a girl and a boy... then I broke the mould with 2 boys.

Missteebeee · 27/12/2019 08:25

Sister one: two boys
Sister 2: one girl then one boy
Sister 3: girl, boy, girl, girl, boy
Me: girl, boy, boy, girl
Little sister: boy, boy, girl

So all in all, completely random

Ijustwanttoretire · 27/12/2019 08:26

I have 2 boys - different fathers. I agree with OP - most (but not all) people I know their first two are the same sex. I didn't give a monkeys one way or the other with my first but second time round I hoped for a boy as I 'knew' what I was doing and what to expect. Well that was the theory anyway!

happytoday73 · 27/12/2019 08:31

I read a statistical study a few years ago that determined that older parents were more likely to multiples & have a girl unless that had already had 2 or more boys when the chance of more boys was stronger.

In my family if we have a girl first have both sexes, if boy first just have boys. Also only twins to those that have boy first. As my husband has mainly uncles (and twins) we knew our chances of girls were likely remote...

YappityYapYap · 27/12/2019 08:32

I have 3 sisters so my parents had all girls. However, my older sister has 4 kids and they went boy, girl, boy, girl. My younger sister has 2 kids and they are boy, girl. My youngest sister has a girl and is pregnant with another girl. I just have 1 and he is a boy. There doesn't seem to be a pattern really
