Bring my daughter to A&E

She has had vomiting and diarrhoea, started yesterday, and has been lethargic since Tuesday. Has gone rapidly downhill today. Has a temperature that is causing hallucinations, has had all the medicine she can have plus all the usual treatment for temperatures. Is incredibly irritable and wont let us touch her. There have been bugs about the house but from history with my other DD it seems like a kidney infection. Phoned out of hours at 6 and still haven't heard back from doctor. She is getting rapidly worse. Aibu bringing her to A&E? In northern Ireland so we have no drop ins here and no 111 service

If your comment was aimed at me you misunderstood as I was speaking generally. You certainly didn't come across as knowing what to do as you claim to be now.

Forgottenwhatsleepis · 27/12/2019 12:01

Glad your DD is on the mend OP! Personally I found Nurofen for kids/ ibuprofen works better than Calpol at bringing down temps quickly (not tried Calprofen so can't comment on that)Also this isn't a dig, but the rash comes last in sepsis, but honestly really glad she is ok, and hoping you are all getting some much needed rest 💐

ScrimshawTheSecond · 27/12/2019 12:04

So glad to hear she's better. Hope you all get a good rest today.

Confuddledtown · 27/12/2019 12:44

@SunshineCake I was weighing up the pros/cons of A&E vs out of hours, detail of which I was able to go into once my child was well. There also seems to be a big difference between out of hours and A&E over here in northern ireland and what you have over in the mainland UK. In my area we are far more pushed towards out of hours, and as I updated I had previously been told off when bringing my older daughter to A&E with a kidney infection, hence the dilemma. Considering my child only began presenting with a temperature at 6 and had antibiotics in her system by 9, my original decision to go to out of hours first was right, but panic took over and surely any parent doubts their decisions when the wellbeing of their children is concerned.

@Forgottenwhatsleepis some one asked me if I checked for a rash so I was just responding to that but thank you. Alas my daughter had a stomach ulcer and isnt allowed nurofen

@ClinkyMonkey Rvh sound much better than our local hospital, we are very far away from Belfast

OP posts:
ClinkyMonkey · 27/12/2019 12:53

Ah, OP, see I'm doing that thing where I think Belfast is the centre of the universe in NI and everyone's only a short drive away! Even though I have relatives who are a couple of hours away and I visit regularlyGrin

Glad all is well.

CarolinaPink · 27/12/2019 13:22

V glad all is now well Thanks

Justaboy · 27/12/2019 13:42

No Medic who's worth their salt, also is experienced and Knows what their doing;!! would ever criticise anyone for bringing a baby or young toddler into a hospital ever!.

Its simply that they have very little in shall we say "resources"?

Example years ago DD2 had what was thought as a bad cold and sounded a bit "chesty" her breathing was rather rough. It turned out that she was having an Asthama attack!! In the special intensive care wardshe was on her mum was told that whilst they are struggling to breathe they can for a while then they run out of energy quite quickley whereas an older person will be able to cope better, all things otherwise OK in that respect.

Seems also that you have a differing system despite our local hospital having an excelent A&E dept that now has a sort of out of hours GP office on site which is a far better arrnangement. So if you do rock up at A&E your refered to the clinic across the other side of the car park clearly labled too for attention its done a Lot it seems ot take the operational stress of the A&E dept!.

It is also a pain and well, its the way the system 111 is, that your their awaiting a call back when you can be on your way to hospital or wherever!

If it were me and a babe in bother I'd just go, and hang the earbend of anyone giving me a bollicking!

Itsmybirthday19 · 27/12/2019 13:49

I had sepsis caused by a kidney infection when pg. I had no temp and while I was in pain, I didn't feel that unwell. The only notable thing was the shivering (I now know this was the rigours).

I wouldn't have gone to hospital - DH forced me. Bloody good thing he did as I suddenly started to crash while in triage and very nearly died. If I hadn't have been in the hospital at the time, I would have.

But I didn't present with the normal symptoms of sepsis, so to all those criticising the OP, it's not always easy to judge.

Ginfordinner · 27/12/2019 13:59

I hope the antibiotics kick in soon. Has she been referred for a DMSA scan?

DD used to get recurring urine infections, so was referred to the hospital where it was discovered that she had bladder reflux. She had a DMSA scan to check for damage to the kidneys, and put on a prophylactic dose of antibiotics to prevent a UTI and so that any future urine infections wouldn't travel back to the kidneys.

If there isn't any follow up, please ask your GP to refer your DD. Repeated kidney infections can have serious implications later in life.

Confuddledtown · 27/12/2019 14:52

@Ginfordinner Thankyou, antibiotics seem to have kicked in and shes much more like her usual self, albeit still a bit sleepy but that's to be expected. They have given her antibiotics for 5 days but advised me to make an appointment with gp for them to reassess her to check the infection has completely cleared and they can prescribe a longer/stronger dose if needs be. I've made an appointment for Monday so I'll see what the GP says then. This is only her 2nd kidney infection, her first was a good 18 months ago so I'm not sure if she'll qualify for referral. My Dd1 had very recurrent kidney infections, she had 6 in the space of a year that got increasingly more painful and resistant. From memory I think they didnt refer her until she had 3 in the space of a year. I'll make sure to talk it all through with gp on monday

Are they urine infections or kidney infections? If your DD had 3 kidney infections before she was referred that is quite shocking. DD was referred after her second urine infection in a week. We are very lucky that our GPs are so thorough.

The paediatrician spelled it out very clearly to me just how serious untreated UTIs could be. If your DD1 hasn't had a DMSA scan please insist that she has one to assess whether she has sustained any kidney damage. Also, if your DD2 is getting kidney infections as well I would insist that this is investigated as it is too much of a coincidence that both daughters are getting kidney infections.

I hope you get some answers, but it sounds like you need to push for them.

Confuddledtown · 27/12/2019 15:32

They always refer to them as water works infections. DD1 was admitted to hospital when she was 3, had to have a catheter and all in, it was terrible. She was terrified of going to the toilet and it got to the point she would only pee in the bath with the warm water to soothe it. It was a terrible time. She had a scan but no damage or cause was found. Eventually she just stopped getting them, she hasnt had one in about 2 years (shes now 6).

DD2 definitely isnt as bad, but will be discussing the history of my other daughter with the doctor to make sure any risk of reoccurance is nipped in the bud

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 27/12/2019 16:05

They always refer to them as water works infections

My understanding is that a “water works” infection doesn’t necessarily mean “kidney infection”. I have had “water works” infections a few times but only once have I had a “query kidney infection” in my GPS words.

Confuddledtown · 27/12/2019 16:11

Water works covers urinary tract, urethra, kidneys and bladder

OP posts:
paradyning · 27/12/2019 16:24

The OP clearly knows what she's doing for her children's health. Leave it at that.
And for what it's worth you cannot demand a DMSA scan. They have to be properly justified by an IRMER practitioner. Not just 'because the parent wants one'
Glad they are on the mend OP.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 27/12/2019 16:29

Water works covers urinary tract, urethra, kidneys and bladder

Yes it does. But it does not ALWAYS mean a kidney infection. Have you actually been told it is a kidney infection? Recurrent kidney infections are different to recurrent bladder infections...

Confuddledtown · 27/12/2019 16:31

Yes 🙄

OP posts:
Ginfordinner · 27/12/2019 16:43

Kidney infections are much more serious than urine infections.

Confuddledtown · 27/12/2019 16:51

I am well aware as my daughter was admitted into hospital with one for a week when she was 3

OP posts:
BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 27/12/2019 17:48

Yes

Sorry, it’s just that when you said it had been referred to as “water works” it made it sound like they hadn’t ACTUALLY said “kidney infection”.

Confuddledtown · 27/12/2019 18:12

Yes they ACTUALLY had a "kidney infection."

Thank you to every one who sent well wishes and gave advice. She is doing much better.

I'm not responding to anymore comments as they are getting a bit ridiculous now. My daughter has been treated and is getting better, so staying to discuss my children's entire medical history is a bit of a moot point.

Thank you for your concern

OP posts:
IamaBluebird · 27/12/2019 18:18

Newschapter · 27/12/2019 18:25

@Confuddledtown glad to see Dd has been seen to.

I'm in NI too, near the Causeway, and I'd have taken the same action as you.

Some folk don't understand how different it is in the back of beyond Grin

Justaboy · 27/12/2019 19:58

Confuddledtown
