DH is making himself ill because he always has to be right

After a bit of a hunt this morning, I've just located a whole raw chicken in our car after DH obviously forgot to bring it in with the rest of the food shopping on the morning of the 23rd December (I had gone out to a different shop for a few more little bits in my car so he was left to do the unpacking from his car).

I am clearly annoyed and insisting the slightly green chicken is bad now but he is adamant it's fine as leaving the chicken in a cold car for two days is as good as leaving it in the fridge apparently. No idea on the temp here but it's been raining/a bit sunny here in Wiltshire during these last two days.

I'm certain he's just saying this because he's a stubborn person who, if I said the grass was green he'd argue that it was pink. Doesn't do it to anyone else, just me. He always has to be right. I've said the chicken is bad and so he's insisting it's perfectly fine to eat and is now cooking it. I'm pissed off knowing there's a strong possibility he's going to ruin boxing day being sat on the toilet the whole time which is just great when we have two young children. Is he bu for eating it or aibu (it is safe and I should leave him to it)?

The danger zone for poultry is any temperature above 4.4' Celsius. Unless the temp has been below that, the chicken is poisonous.

*DO NOT LET YOUR CHILDREN EAT ANY

It could potentially kill them*

MarianaMoatedGrange · 25/12/2019 14:30

I have never before been so interested in whether someone develops the runs

Me neither! Xmas Grin

Code brown countdown Xmas Grin

Soubriquet · 25/12/2019 14:31

If he does suffer, remember to not give him ANY sympathy and never let him live it down

If by some chance he had a stomach of steel, avoid speaking of it ever again

NumbersStation · 25/12/2019 14:32

@Rachelfromfriends1

No. OP and the kids are having gammon and bits.

He is noshing the chicken.

JustASmallTownCurl · 25/12/2019 14:32

Do you have an extra loo he can use by any chance? We have a two bed one bathroom place so I would be FUMING if someone did this knowing it is likely to end with the runs, just to prove a fucking point. Ugh.

MyMajesty · 25/12/2019 14:32

Some PP missed this one :

Nope he's eating it with his Christmas dinner right now. Code brown, count down to shitplosion starts now

Rachelfromfriends1 · 25/12/2019 14:33

Oh fair enough, I definitely missed that! Ignore me

MyMajesty · 25/12/2019 14:34

Seriously, I hope everything in the kitchen has been washed with Dettol.
(Or Zoflora, maybe)

Namestranger · 25/12/2019 14:35

Christ alive. I bet he'll (annoyingly) be fine.

Bananalanacake · 25/12/2019 14:36

Got a new phone and am working out how to reply. All I can say is do you have more than one toilet.

Oh lay-oh-lay! 🎼

MyMajesty · 25/12/2019 14:40

Tedious reality :

most bacteria can be transmitted airborne and cross contamination on surfaces and utensils so bringing a heavily bacteria ladened chicken into the kitchen where there is ready to eat food is just not worth the risk. Proper food poisoning is very serious and can cause liver and kidney failure so it is just not worth the risk.

nocoolnamesleft · 25/12/2019 14:40

He may get away with it, but it's a heck of a risk. I trust you are frenetically sterilising anything that he may have cross contaminated in his idiocy.

hazell42 · 25/12/2019 14:48

I put my turkey in the shed for 2 days because I didnt have room in the fridge
And I remember delia saying she used to keep hers in the boot of the car.

AwdBovril · 25/12/2019 14:49

I am usually very sceptical of use-by & best before dates, but with raw poultry or fish, & cooked rice, it pays to be cautious. He will be fortunate if he escapes with his guts in a happy state!

And YY to the posters recommending that you sterilise anything that poses a potential risk of cross contamination. I know someone who caught salmonella from raw poultry, & lost 3 stone before they could eat even vaguely normally again. Very unpleasant.

Liara · 25/12/2019 14:50

I did exactly this earlier this week. I stewed it for ages and it was fine.

DeeCeeCherry · 25/12/2019 14:57

If he gets ill he'll just say it wasn't the chicken.

I had 5 years of Mr Stubborn who always, always had to be right. Only with me, of course. Dumping him was absolutely the best thing I did. Peace, and bliss.. No more offensive, obsessive, pointless stubbornness and having to deal with a point-scoring idiot daily.

trackrBird · 25/12/2019 14:58

Just stupid.

Ask, would you pay £(sunk cost of bad chicken) to avoid being ill, and maybe worse? Most people would.

QuestionableMouse · 25/12/2019 14:59

@FGSJoanWhatsWrongWithYou

You can't always smell when food has gone bad.

@Whereisthechicken, I'd have chucked it straight in the bin and would be tempted to remove it from the oven and chuck it.

Bacardi101 · 25/12/2019 15:02

Shamelessly place marking Blush

Mummyoflittledragon · 25/12/2019 15:02

Watching - waiting. Hope he will be ok!

Horehound · 25/12/2019 15:05

I actually think it will be ok. If it's cooked well..

SacharissaCrisplock · 25/12/2019 15:05

I suspect that he'll be OK and extremely lucky which will then not help you in future because by rights he should be shitting himself inside out.
