DH is making himself ill because he always has to be right

After a bit of a hunt this morning, I've just located a whole raw chicken in our car after DH obviously forgot to bring it in with the rest of the food shopping on the morning of the 23rd December (I had gone out to a different shop for a few more little bits in my car so he was left to do the unpacking from his car).

I am clearly annoyed and insisting the slightly green chicken is bad now but he is adamant it's fine as leaving the chicken in a cold car for two days is as good as leaving it in the fridge apparently. No idea on the temp here but it's been raining/a bit sunny here in Wiltshire during these last two days.

I'm certain he's just saying this because he's a stubborn person who, if I said the grass was green he'd argue that it was pink. Doesn't do it to anyone else, just me. He always has to be right. I've said the chicken is bad and so he's insisting it's perfectly fine to eat and is now cooking it. I'm pissed off knowing there's a strong possibility he's going to ruin boxing day being sat on the toilet the whole time which is just great when we have two young children. Is he bu for eating it or aibu (it is safe and I should leave him to it)?

Hahaha so I see he survived then!? Been dying to check this all day - I do reckon now he’s pretty much got away with it, although still dickish behaviour.

Ninkanink · 26/12/2019 16:11

Food poisoning can take up to 48 hrs to develop.

And anyway it’s not a given that one will get it, even with chicken that’s been sitting out in a car for two days - it’s just not really a risk worth taking, especially when it comes to children and elderly, pregnant women or people whose immune systems aren’t strong enough to cope.

TheHonestTruth100 · 26/12/2019 16:18

Regardless if he's ok we all know he's a fool for eating it OP. Everyone knows it's risky eating meat in those circumstances. Why risk your health like that, especially if it's to prove a point.

zafferana · 26/12/2019 16:26

Some people just the constitution of an ox. I used to have a housemate who could eat absolutely anything and not get ill. He even finished off a take away the next day that had made me ill and he was fine! I couldn't believe it.

Technonan · 26/12/2019 16:27

TBH, it it's well-cooked, it will probably by OK, but I wouldn't let the kids eat any of it.

Elfnsafe1y · 26/12/2019 16:30

As I would be doing the mopping up , though they might make a half-arsed attempt, of any puke etc, I would not risk it.

MoaningMinniee · 26/12/2019 16:30

I'm Wiltshire too, yesterday was a lovely sunny comparatively warm day. Inside of a car will have been pretty warm. Sneak into kitchen now, get it out and bin it before he sends the children into A&E.

MoaningMinniee · 26/12/2019 16:32

Sorry missed a whole chunk of posts Blush only just realised you started this thread yesterday not this morning! (Boxing Day).

yellowallpaper · 26/12/2019 16:35

Was going to say he'll probably be fine (although salmonella can hit a few days later) as cooking usually kills off all bugs in chicken. I would have bleached every thing that came near the preparation though.

CripsSandwiches · 26/12/2019 16:41

Exactly even if there was a 10% chance of me getting horrific food poisoning it's not a risk that would be worth taking.

sparklefarts · 26/12/2019 18:33

Has he got the shits yet? Grin

Whereisthechicken · 26/12/2019 18:54

No, he hasn't got the shits yet and I'm really disappointed Grin

I swear he knows he shouldn't be eating it because he's barely had any but he obviously won't admit it out loud. He only had a few slices with his christmas dinner but hasn't really eaten any more since even though, apparently, it tastes so nice and he couldn't wait to eat tons of chicken sandwiches. I'm calling it, he absolutely knows I was right about the chicken and has just eaten the bare minimum so he can say it was fine to eat. Perhaps I'll offer to make him some kind of giant scooby snack sandwich using the rest of it and see what his reaction is like.

Knittedfairies · 26/12/2019 18:58

I wouldn't offer, or make, him anything with a possibly-gone-off chicken; the cross-contamination wouldn't be worth it. Time to bin it.

AllYouGoodGoodPeople · 26/12/2019 20:04

So he's going hungry rather than eat the manky germfest meat? Dammit. He's not chucking up and he's denying you the opportunity to do the I Told You So sing and dance.

Make him a nice sandwich. He's probably like my dad though, the worst hygiene with handling raw meat etc but never ill.

Butterymuffin · 26/12/2019 21:15

I would go to the fridge and go 'ooh, you haven't eaten much of that chicken! Shall I throw it out now or are you going to finish it up tonight?' Don't let it go unnoticed..

MBM18 · 26/12/2019 21:20

Oh man, I wanted him to have the shits Grin

LauraMipsum · 26/12/2019 21:24

Every time I've got into the car in the last few days it's been bloody freezing, plus chicken that's gone off REALLY smells, so I think he'll probably be smugly and frustratingly fine.

ThreeLeggedCat · 26/12/2019 21:32

The onset time for campy is 2 - 5 days, so hold tight OP, you may still be proved right!

WTFdidwedo · 26/12/2019 21:37

Campylobacter can actually take up to 10 days to hit, though normally presents in 2 or 3 days, so he could still be very ill. Also to correct some rather erroneous posts, cooking to 75 degrees does not kill off horrible causes of food poisoning.

Thelnebriati · 26/12/2019 21:45

Read Green Eggs and Ham to your DC's tonight Xmas Grin

aLilNonnyMouse · 26/12/2019 22:19

When I got sick from chicken I ate it on the monday night and felt totally fine until the Thursday. I ended up off work for an entire week, I was so ill I couldn't move from the bathroom. I only ate one bite as well, just because he is fine now doesn't mean he will be in a few days.

LittleMissTeacup · 27/12/2019 12:13

I reckon he’s also picked the bits that looked better as well as eating the bare minimum! My DP does things like this too!

CatherineCawood · 27/12/2019 12:20

Wow what a nut case! I'm quite relaxed about slightly out of date food. DH refuses to eat some stuff I'm happy to. I would have not eaten this no way. I would say it has been far too mild unless you're in northern Scotland which you're not. Surprised he is OK.
