I don't like Colin's. And as I've got older I've started to dislike Andre Lincoln's characters (which is sad as I used to love it so sort of taking the magic out of it) as he's actually a creepy stalker.

@frouby they are not porn actors, just body doubles. They discuss it in the film.

Glitterfisher · 26/12/2019 17:43

Sorry not body doubles if that's not the correct terminology, stand ins for sex scenes in normal films. This is mentioned on loads of programmes, if you remember in Friends Joey is a stand in for Al Pacinos butt (I think?) Grin

kateandme · 26/12/2019 17:51

Glitterfisher love that episode.

Ritascornershop · 26/12/2019 17:53

Emma Thompson as she appears in interviews annoys me half to death. Emma Thompson the actress is generally wonderful and she certainly is here, as is Alan Rickman (even if the character he played was behaving badly).

Bill Nighy & Gregor Fisher were wonderful.

These two stories are flawless.

Liam Neeson’s Was quite good, though the boy seemed awfully young for such a desperate crush.

Colin Firth - I find it hard to dislike him but falling in love with someone who doesn’t speak your language means you’re (more than is usual) falling in love with an idea, not a person.

Laura Linney - great acting, but annoying story of pointless female sacrifice.

Hugh Grant and Martine - I swear a lot, but that was just odd. I didn’t find it funny, and it certainly was not believable.

Lincoln and Knightley - always found that odd & unlikely. A normal woman just wed would be creeped out, not smiling in a simpering way.

Colin - awful, and highly unlikely.

Porno couple - odd idea, pointless.

Glitterfisher · 26/12/2019 17:53

@kateandme it was Al Pacino wasnt it? I love that he 'acts' with his butt and they get really pissed off with him Grin

Chancey1982 · 26/12/2019 17:56

Hate the film. Love Emma Thompson.

kateandme · 26/12/2019 18:18

Glitterfisher yeh ha! he had a few eps like that didnt he,doing funny stuff to get parts

DownstairsMixUp · 26/12/2019 19:03

I watch it but yes it sexist shite. Clearly written by someone v. Posh who hasn't a clue what wc people are like! Baffling. The woman calling martine fat to is just Hmm

RibenaMonsoon · 26/12/2019 19:14

I love it all. I'm a hopeless romantic.
Although Keira Knightlys husband is a bit lacklustre though.
Telling her to give the carol singers a quid and bugger off, loudly.. So they could probably hear him. What a nob! (okay it wasn't carol singers, it was his BFF declaring his undying love for her) but still! What a douche bag!!
Plus his mate was always doing nice things for him but you never see him doing the same back.
She married the wrong one there I recon.

ragged · 26/12/2019 19:53

All the "Oh she's so fat!" comments in LA I think are an inside concurrent joke on the people who mocked MM's real life weight loss. It's her way of having Last Laugh.

She looked dynamite in LA (and not fat, either).

Figgygal · 26/12/2019 20:09

I can't say I like the opening reference to the twin towers either

TulipsTulipsTulips · 26/12/2019 20:09

I dislike the one with the woman who can’t speak English. He falls in love with the idea of her, not a real person with ideas, opinions, issues, etc.

Underneaththetree · 26/12/2019 20:13

Liam neeson story just feels really uncomfortable and sad now since his real-life wife died a few years later in really early/tragic circumstances

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2019 20:45

Colin - awful, and highly unlikely.

Hmm. Unlikely, to have the funds to carry it through, but I knew a lot of twenty-something men who thought this was a cracking idea when the film cane out.

Ritascornershop · 26/12/2019 21:24

@bikerunski - I meant more, is it really likely a man can pick up a group of roommates for sex? Sounds like a porno vs real-life.

fligglepige · 26/12/2019 21:26

Re: the 'no one wants to shag a cry baby' comment. This is the kind of black humour that gets a lot of people through the worst kind of grief. I could give examples from my own life and family, but they sound really bad taken out of context!

ShinyNewNameTimeAgain · 26/12/2019 21:28

bikerunski I absolutely love Colin as he’s exactly like my brother was when the film came out, even looks similar. My dbro did exactly the same, headed out for a gap year in the States with no plan other than to pick up women.

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2019 21:31

@Ritascornershop, when I was a postgrad we had some US exchange students who went crazy for the British guys’ accents, so maybe not that far fetched. But I’ve always seen the Colin story as a bit tongue in cheek.

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2019 21:34

@ShinyNewNameTimeAgain, I knew so many guys who would be all “Respect!” for your brother.

Kris Marshall (Colin) looks bit unlike my DBf before DH, it wouldn’t have surprised me if he’d done the same. 😂

Underneaththetree · 26/12/2019 21:35

Isn’t the humour in the Colin frizzle scene playing on the fact that it IS really unrealistic and silly?

BikeRunSki · 26/12/2019 21:38

Exactly underneathetree.

PositiveVibez · 26/12/2019 21:51

Yes I watched it for the first time this year and really felt that on his scene's. Quite sad.

FrauleinF · 26/12/2019 23:16

@chomalungma

You've put your finger on why I hate this film so much.

All the (at times hopelessly shallow) men whose story we follow get the big happy ever after, or at least a significant chunk of it, in winning "woman as prize".

The women who we follow (either obligated to care for others or seemingly not exciting enough to be faithful to, and arguably the two characters in the whole film with the most emotional depth) get a big fat "fuck you" and no meaningful payoff whatsoever.

That gurning idiot with no plan other than to pick up.American women using his British accent is rewarded with his fantasy threesome (and fuckable "prizes" to bring home for him and his friend, no less) - whilst Laura Linney is denied any romantic relationship at all because of her misguided sense of obligation? No thanks.

Them cutting the lesbian couple was unforgivable as well, although it was yet another example of women basically ending up "alone".

The worst of what roles society carves out for the two sexes, in a nutshell...

chomalungma · 27/12/2019 09:08

@FrauleinF

When it's written down like that - about what happens to each character, it becomes so obvious.

I wonder what Richard Curtis thinks of the film.

Or Emma Thompson, Hugh Grant etc...

PurpleFlower1983 · 27/12/2019 09:23

Colin Firth’s is a bit random - like they wanted him in it but didn’t know where.
