Boris does come from European nobility and he is descended from King George II

malylis · 27/12/2019 21:32

wasn't descended from, had links to.

Not sure foreign titles count in terms of class.

Emeraldshamrock · 27/12/2019 21:35

You can become middle class, in fact going to university used to be regarded as the catalyst of change
Yes I agree for your future for tge children's future. They will be MC but it doesn't wipe out the past.
You can be working class and professional my cousin is the of a department for a huge tech firm, her 46 year old DH has retired from his tech firm with a huge pay off only to take on another project, they are very successful and WC.

malylis · 27/12/2019 21:44

But they aren't, by becoming professionals you stop being working class. You aren't paid by the hour or day for example.

Emeraldshamrock · 27/12/2019 21:46

I bet most born into MC families disagree but probably are to polite to say it.

Yep still doesn't make a person MC.
Take Lynn ruane from Dublin she is an inspiration and very proud to be WC.
Lynn Ruane is an Irish politician who has served as an Independent Senator for the University of Dublin constituency in Seanad Éireann since April 2016. She was the President of the Trinity College Dublin Students' Union
Many many WC people become respected and proud professionals as WC infact it inspires them.

malylis · 27/12/2019 21:50

Then they are snobby middle classes. Not very bright either.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 27/12/2019 21:51

I don’t understand the wasn’t descended from comment. It was his 8x great grand father.

Emeraldshamrock · 27/12/2019 22:04

Then they are snobby middle classes. Not very bright either For not believing Mary from the corner who grew up in a antisocial area done a master's and became middle class on her graduation.
It is okay to be from working class with a masters degree, it is more than okay it is brilliant though a person shouldn't feel by achieving this they must change their voice, judge their family and move into a MC circle, where the real MC think your a fraud anyway.
In my view becoming a professional does not make your MC.
Similar if born MC with an education and all the mannerisms losing your cash won't make you WC either.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 27/12/2019 22:05

As seen more than once on Who Do You Think You Are?, I dare say a lot,of us are probably distantly related to The Black Prince ,or Edward The Confessor - if you could go trace back far enough. Multiply each generation by 2 and you’ve soon got enough ancestors to fill a half a dozen battleships.

Meanwhile, my DM who died a few years ago at 97 maintained that net curtains and shoes-off-indoors were sure signs of LMC.

malylis · 27/12/2019 22:16

Look at the definitions of what makes you MC WC etc.

It does count if you got a masters, as I said, not very bright and snobby.

Okay as long as you believe a person can change class with a masters, do they leave their birth family behind or can you be MC with WC sibling's niece's nephew's?
I'm not sure what your not very bright and snobby is about? Is it the folk born into MC families.

malylis · 27/12/2019 22:25

A person can change class, you can be MC with WC family, of course.

FeigningHorror · 27/12/2019 22:30

I have an Oxford DPhil, and I can assure you I did not magically take a step up the class ladder as the certificate landed in my hand.

louderthan · 27/12/2019 22:32

The thing I find the most interesting is the variations within the middle classes. For instance I'd consider both my family and ex-DPs family to be middle class but they are worlds apart:
Mine:
Left wing
City dwelling
Bit bohemian (some would say grubby)
Teachers/social workers/academics/writer
Kids sent to state school

Ex DPs:
Conservative
Home Counties dwelling
Religious
Accountants/engineer/City worker/Army
Kids to private school

The only common denominator is university education.

My mum is from a very working class background: first in her family to go to uni, her parents both left school at 14 and ran a grocer's shop.
But she is a retired teacher and academic and would definitely describe herself as middle class. I find it all very interesting.

malylis · 27/12/2019 22:33

I said it was the catalyst.

In most cases people who have degrees become professionals, receive salaries. They are no longer paid by the hour as their main source of income.

Emeraldshamrock · 28/12/2019 01:24

I don't think this class calculator takes background into consideration. Personally I couldn't give a shiny shit a person is a person if they're doing their best, treating others around them with respect it really shouldn't matter -living their best life cringe--

AlaskanOilBaron · 28/12/2019 07:28

Strictly speaking, upper-middle means descended from aristocracy/having titled ancestors but having lost claim to them.

In the modern sense, Boris Johnson for example would be considered upper-middle regardless of whether he has titled ancestors, because of his bohemian upbringing, Eton etc. It's quite possible for middle-class parents to produce upper-middle class children these days, IMO.

ChazsBrilliantAttitude · 28/12/2019 11:24

AlaskanOilBaron
That makes sense. Boris, Cameron et al. do fit more into what I assumed would be UMC although Samantha Cameron might be Upper class.

I think someone posted below that it takes 3 generations to fully move class and I suspect there is some truth in that. Children can move up a class but it is their children that consolidate the move.

Exactly.
Though your opinion won't be liked by those who moved up a class after graduation.
My Dsis is intelligent loved education. She is a professional but still wc and there is nothing wrong in that.

AlaskanOilBaron · 28/12/2019 18:55

SamCam descends from Henry the 8th. She’s UC by most any measure.

OhTheRoses · 28/12/2019 19:14

That made me laugh Alaskan. Many are descended from Royal bastards. (Not aimed at Sam Cam)

sproutsgalore · 28/12/2019 19:21

Yet another class thread. Surely this has been done to death and back by now?

Quite frankly, no-one gives a shit other than those who think they are better than the next person, and the opinion of someone like that isn't worth listening to.

WatchingTheMoon · 28/12/2019 19:30

@sproutsgalore

How awful that you are forced to read threads you're not interested in. Is there someone you can talk to about this?

I don’t give a shit. I quite enjoy not conforming or rebelling.

Someone upthread identified me as middle class, but the mc care about what people think. I don’t care!😁

I think non conforming comes with confidence.
........
That is a very refreshing post and I certainly identify with it.
