Option 1) tescos
Option 2) "crap pub"

Context: met through OLD, chatting for a couple of months, talked on the phone and arranged to meet on 27th.

His car is off the road so i said i would come to his neck of the woods, he should suggest where as i dont know the area.

Tescos is his first choice. Crap pub came about after i pushed back on tescos.

Told him as its a first meet and i am travelling to him (circa 50 miles) i expect more than tescos or a crap pub. Its in his court but I feel like saying "sod it" all together

LuluJakey1 · 24/12/2019 00:51

Don't meet him. There is something off here. Trust your gut reaction. You deserve better than Tesco or a crap pub.

Napmum · 24/12/2019 00:54

Hhmmm it sounds like he's not got much cash. If you're interested in him she to is personality and not bothered that he appears to have literally no cash. I would suggest some where near that location that seems decent from online reviews and offer to pay half. However, I would definitely think twice about dating someone who has no cash just because it's a stressful situation to be in and makes dating a bit crap.

So basically you're in your rights to say sod off and if it was me I would have to really really like him to consider dating him just due to his circumstances making it much more difficult

PompeyBez · 24/12/2019 00:58

That would be a no from me! I once had someone I talked to in OLD suggest we met in the Costco cafe as he had to do some shopping for work. I told him I wasnt interested in watching him buy cut price bog roll and left it at that! Him asking to come to your house is weird though!

FruitcakeOfHate · 24/12/2019 01:06

WTF? You seriously have to ask if it's unreasonable not to travel 100 miles to see some online losers in bloody Tesco? Geezo! Bin off.

YoungHun · 24/12/2019 01:10

Do not travel 50 miles for a first date!! If they're interested they'll come to you. Car problems or no car problems!

I always used to go to Costa for first date when OLD. It's not really a first date it's more a meeting to see if you fancy each other in person.

81Byerley · 24/12/2019 01:11

He sounds weird...don't meet him.

Sushiroller · 24/12/2019 01:15

It's a hard no from me.

While I don't need the moon on a stick, I do believe a certain ambiance is required for love to bloom. To my knowledge this ambiance is yet to be found in either a Tescos or a crap pub.

BillHadersNewWife · 24/12/2019 01:31

If his car's 'off the road' and he's asking you to meet in Tesco...then he's not a good bet OP. Surely you can see that!?

AmICrazyorWhat2 · 24/12/2019 01:44

Tesco's for a date, he's having a laugh.

Don't bother, OP!

Sally2791 · 24/12/2019 01:51

More scary was him asking originally to come to your house- totally inappropriate. Run.

VanyaHargreeves · 24/12/2019 01:53

HAHAHAHA hell to the no. Both counts.

Surprised he hasn't suggested McDonalds.

Maccys is obviously 3rd date territory if Tesco is First Date to Impress and Crap Pub is second meet up territory

Run.

VanyaHargreeves · 24/12/2019 01:54

Lol X post with the poster above and us both going :

Run. GrinGrin

NightsOfCabiria · 24/12/2019 01:54

Ah yes, the old ‘my car’s off the road’ - i.e. He doesnt want you to know the plate/make/model or, he’s broke and doesnt have one/cant drive/banned.

Added to that, a proposed date in Tesco?

Be still my beating heart!

Sounds like he was after an easy, cheap coffee then back to his or a quick shag at yours (before the car trouble).

Never make an effort for someone who makes none for you.

SavageBeauty73 · 24/12/2019 01:54

He sounds weird!!!

1forAll74 · 24/12/2019 01:55

Would Waitrose be better for you !

VanyaHargreeves · 24/12/2019 01:56

Any supermarket cafe for a first date is fuckery tbh

HowDoYouLikeThoseSuedeApples · 24/12/2019 01:57

That’s not low cost or effort on his behalf - surely he’s in negative date equity here. I would Drop and Block.

Dogno1 · 24/12/2019 02:00

He's wanting to do a stock up /freezer shop, but doesn't want to spring for a taxi. Has he asked the capacity of your boot OP?

gumpforestgump · 24/12/2019 02:02

Oh god no!

FineWordsForAPorcupine · 24/12/2019 02:40

Wow. Two possibilities:

  1. he is on a completely different page to you, ie : he thinks you guys are meeting up for a shag, and therefore the venue to meet is immaterial, since it will be quickly back to his.

  2. he's checking to see what your boundaries are like. I've experienced this with OLD - men doing things like changing the venue/date /time at the last minute, picking an unappealing place or activity, etc etc to see if I will fall in line. Its actually a standard move in the PUA world - they are checking to see how compliant (and desperate) you are. It also creates a "fallacy of sunk costs" in the victim - the more effort you have to put in to make the date happen, the more you invested you feel in it going well.

My bet is that if you complain about the choice of venue, you will get back an accusation about "women who expect to be taken to fancy restaurants" and thinly veiled accusations of being a gold digger. Again, designed to make you want to "prove you aren't like that" and accept his crappy offer.

katy1213 · 24/12/2019 02:48

Not worth the petrol money!

katy1213 · 24/12/2019 02:50

PS Does he know that it's free coffee in Waitrose?

KC225 · 24/12/2019 04:58

Is it Jarvis Cocker?

Remember the lyrics to Common People, 'I took her to a SUPERMARKET, I don't know why but I had to start it'

If not 'NO'. It doesn't sound as I'd yiu are on the right page or will ever be.

Obligatorync · 24/12/2019 05:06

Oh God. At first I thought he might have been joking, but clearly not.
Don't do it. He'd book your wedding reception in the garden bit at Homebase.

Oysterbabe · 24/12/2019 05:15

Why on earth have you been chatting so long without meeting? Have a date after a week or 2, you won't fancy them 90% of the time so that's a lot of wasted time.
