AIBU yo ask when the first selfie was taken? I think I can date it to 1985!

Was re watching National Lampoon's European Vacation last night ahead of the Christmas one tomorrow

Anyway, at one point in the film, Chevy Chase takes a selfie of himself outside the Coliseum. He's doing it in an embarrassed, self conscious, saddo type fashion as he's sightseeing on his own instead of with his family and it made me think how things have changed!

So, can you date a selfie earlier than 1985? You've got to have proof Grin

Sadly I was only born in '87.

I do have a selfie somewhere of some time in the early 2000's though 😂

AhoyMrBeaver · 23/12/2019 19:27

I think some of the pioneers of photography were taking photos of themselves, so mid-1800s? You'd have to Google it, I can't remember the names and dates.

Paul mccartney took one back in the 60s. Pretty sure it wasnt anywhere close to being the first one ever tho.

my2bundles · 23/12/2019 19:34

Not going to add a link. Google Paul McCartney selfie in the 60s. Pretty sure it was 68 during a beatles tour or film.

my2bundles · 23/12/2019 19:37

I also took selfies with my sisters way back in the late 70s so 1985 is pretty late. So no Cheryl didn't invent tne selfie 😂😂😂😂

What counts as a selfie - pointing your own camera at your own face, perhaps?

The standard way of including everyone in a photo used to be by setting up the camera, setting it to "delay", then running into place before the camera was triggered.

my2bundles · 23/12/2019 19:46

Yeah a selfie is holding the camera and pointing at your own face. We did it in the 70s, it's certainly not a new thing despite what today's youth think.

haverhill · 23/12/2019 19:48

The first photos of people were essentially selfies (1830s!).

ScreamingValalalalahLalalalah · 23/12/2019 19:48

Does taking a picture with your mates in one of those old black and white photo booths count? Grin

SquishySquirmy · 23/12/2019 19:50

Rembrandt painted a few I think.

tillytrotter1 · 23/12/2019 22:54

Self-timers have been around for years, do they count as selfies??
