Would you be sad if the Queen died?

I've just been reading the thread about Prince Phillip going into hospital and a poster said they wouldn't be sad if the Queen passed, as she doesn't actually know who we are.

I'm not a royalist by any means and I don't know how I'd feel if the news broke that she died.

How would you feel?

Nope. It’ll be noteworthy, cos, well, she’s the Queen, but sad? No. I was sad when Freddie Mercury died, when David Bowie died, when Alan Rickman died. And lots and lots of others, because they gave something to me, meant something to me. But the Queen, she’s always ‘been there’ but affected me in no way whatsoever.

I'd have a moment of fleeting sadness for the family, in as much as, that's a shame. I think it's a shame Harry is in Canada whilst his Grandad is ill, but that is only reflecting my own views of my own family set up and how I would want my family to be together. Changing the national anthem will be weird though!

GrimDamnFanjo · 21/12/2019 01:49

I don't know her so I wouldn't be dad. I'd acknowledge her family would be sad though.
From a constitutional perspective I'd hope that her passing would usher in some long due reforms regarding the monarchy.

rockingchaircandle · 21/12/2019 01:53

No

Andahelterskelterroundmylittle · 21/12/2019 06:02

Not all sad. Not even for a second.

speakout · 21/12/2019 06:03

I've never met the queen- so no I wouldn;t be sad.

Peacocking · 21/12/2019 06:08

Like others on here, I'm a Republican. But - she reminds me of the elderly relatives that brought me up. With a certain dignity and ethics and composure mainly lost in todays world. I'll be sad when she goes as I suspect shes one of the last of a dying breed. She makes me think of my childhood, and my grandparents. I can tally events in my own life with royal events. Just because I'm a Republican doesnt mean I don't hold respect for her and feel like shes linked to my history and own memories. I dont feel the same way about any other members of the royal family though!

jay55 · 21/12/2019 06:17

I'll be sad it means Charles will be king.

shiveringsparklingtimber · 21/12/2019 06:18

Yes, extremely sad. She's an amazing woman; I admire her loyalty and commitment deeply.

The rest of the royals can dry up and blow away as far as I'm concerned.

SnorkMaiden81 · 21/12/2019 06:26

I'm betting the 'no, I don't know her' gang will be sad

SnorkMaiden81 · 21/12/2019 06:30

Sorry....posted too soon...

The 'no, I don't know her' gang are the same people who will wail in the streets when Attenborough goes too.
He doesn't know or care about you either, but THAT will be a National tragedy.

I'll be a bit sad, I have a lot of admiration for her and the way she's conducted herself personally and professionally in a world of toxic male leaders. She's stoic.

Leedsmom · 21/12/2019 06:31

I’d be quite sad. End of an era and all that plus I think she is a remarkable woman. Privileged of course but her sense of duty is admirable.
Also the fact that I will never see another female monarch and neither will my children in all probability.
I wouldn’t be sad if we no longer had a monarchy but as we’ve got one we’ve been very lucky to have the queen.

speakout · 21/12/2019 06:36

SnorkMaiden81

I can assure you I won't be sad.

nespressowoo · 21/12/2019 06:36

I wouldn't be sad at all.

lowlandLucky · 21/12/2019 06:37

I will be very sad when it happens, HM has been the one constant in this ever changing crazy country.

PhilCornwall1 · 21/12/2019 06:40

On the bright side, we'll probably get a day off work if the funeral is not at the weekend.

Juliette20 · 21/12/2019 06:43

The Greatest Generation are about to walk offstage forever

This. I would be sad for the end of an incredible era of stability she has presided over. The future is very uncertain for the country and certainly the monarchy after she passes away. I'm not a great monarchist but not sure I want a president either, when you look at er, some of the examples around the world.

Juliette20 · 21/12/2019 06:46

That said, I'm not that fussed about Attenborough either way. I find his wildlife programmes often rather melodramatic and manipulative of the audience.

StoneofDestiny · 21/12/2019 06:47

None of us will get anything in her will, despite paying for her lifestyle all her life!

KatherineJaneway · 21/12/2019 06:51

Yes I'll be sad. She's served her country faithfully and is a remarkable woman.

longwayoff · 21/12/2019 06:53

No, I won't be sad, assuming she doesn't outlive me. Expect her to be here ten years hence, not expecting the same for myself. However, when she's gone, hopefully the faux deference that the media displays, the reverential hushed tones of semi-worship, will also go. And, whilst here, TV news rooms, it isn't necessary to send a real, live 'royal correspondent' to stand outside Buckingham Palace in pouring rain to report on a royal story. Any old background pic of the palace would do. Stop it.

Waxonwaxoff0 · 21/12/2019 06:53

No. She's lived to a good age so it won't be a shock. I think she's done a very good job as queen but I don't get sad when people I don't know die.

slipperywhensparticus · 21/12/2019 06:54

I will be sad in an unstable world she has been my only constant

NearlyGranny · 21/12/2019 06:54

No. You can't really be sad when someone who has lived a full and useful life and has reached their 90s dies, can you?

But it will be a time to look back and forward. A watershed. We probably won't have another reigning queen for almost a century, if then, and we'll certainly never have another like her.

I was born between the accession and the coronation, so her reign has literally been my lifetime. It will feel odd to hear "God save the King!" but I hope I'm around to hear it cried twice.

Bluntness100 · 21/12/2019 06:57

I'd be sad, she's been the queen my whole life. I think she's a good few years left though, she looks very sprightly and in rude health.
