AIBU?

To not let car out until the morning

Had a phone call earlier this evening, someone has parked in our private office car park without permission and everyone in the office has now left, locked the gates and the car is stuck in the car park.

The phone call came as we were in the middle of cooking dinner and about to settle down with a nice glass of wine. We have offered to meet them at 8am tomorrow to let them out, they were not happy.

AIBU to think that if you can't be bothered to pay for the public car park across the road and decide to park in a small courtyard where the signs clearly say 'no unauthorised parking' then there is a good chance the gate may be locked and you won't be able to retrieve your car?

Serves them right if you ask me! Kind of you to offer to get up so early on a Saturday to let them out!

I wouldn’t go. But I’m awkward. And would have been in the pub since work closed so no chance of going back.

Yanbu. This happened to me once - I fully accepted that it was my own fault for parking there. Had to climb an 8 foot fence to get my house keys out of the car. It definitely wouldn't have occurred to me to phone up and ask to be let out.

Very good of you to go tomorrow at 8am. I would tell them to come back at 9am on Monday

You can’t possibly drive to let them out if you have had a drink!

I would absolutely be “away for the weekend, returning Monday morning”.

Surly all the key holders have now gone away for Christmas

See we shut for Christmas today till the 6th January. They’d be without their car for quite a while in my case. 😂😂

I’d tell them that the office is closed until 6 January!! CFeryin action parking in a private car park. Unless you are next to a hospital maybe, and they had an enegevct or woman in labour. I might be a bit sympathetic to that.

This happens frequently in our office car park as we don’t have a barrier - but plenty of warning signs and where we are the parkers are very unlikely to not know this. It’s people using it to avoid paying on the street charges. I’d fek them off til Monday if I’m honest.

Monday morning is tempting, but it's Christmas and we're going away so tomorrow actually works better for us.

Nope, "Office closed for Christmas, please come back 6th Jan".

X-post!

I'd have made them wait until Monday. How dare they park somewhere that they obviously weren't meant to, and then expect someone to take out from their family weekend to go and get them out of the shit. No way would I be going today or tomorrow. And if you've shut down for Christmas now then so be it!

I wouldn't go out of my way to help them tbh. However, are you the only person with a key?

Nowhere near a hospital, it's a tiny courtyard with seven spaces for the five offices, if you have an office you get a gate key

You choose the action, you choose the consequences. 🤷 I'd let them out when it's convenient for me.

Please come back in January. 100%

It's very CF behaviour to be unhappy with you! Leave the car there until Monday.

I thought the title of this thread was a typo for “not let the cat out until morning”.

All the offices have keys but we're the main leaseholders, we sublet to the others, so it's our phone number that's on the board outside.

Bloody cheek to park there!

Report

Gazelda · 20/12/2019 19:52

8am tomorrow is a generous offer. And I bloody hope they apologise for the huge inconvenience they've caused you.

this happened somewhere I worked once, except we had rising bollards rather than a gate. Was great fun watching them on the cctv come back to car, scratch head, wander around for a while, come back, try and drive back and forth to bollards, get out, tuck wing mirrors in, try and squeeze through, etc...Grin
