Doesn't matter whose fault that is, it's appalling if true. Seriously successive governments of both parties have seriously failed.

Oilyoilyoilgob · 20/12/2019 16:54

Comparing Brussels and Vienna to places like East Yorkshire (where I’m from and live), yep not the best bit of data to go on 🤣

Bluntness100 · 20/12/2019 16:58

Honestly op. You're going to have to get over it.

mindproject · 20/12/2019 17:04

The turkeys voted for Christmas because they are all potato heads who hate Brussels. So now we're all stuffed. Wish I was on the gravy train so I could afford a pudding.

Merry Brexit Christmas.

You're all crackers.

Teateaandmoretea · 20/12/2019 17:04

Firstly, "the North" is not a homogeneous mass. It is more than one region, it has cities, rural areas, pockets of deprivation, pockets of affluence, and everything in between. And where is "the North"? What many people consider to be "the North" is still Southern to many other Northerners

Totally true, couldn't agree more.

Justaboy · 20/12/2019 17:05

Labour managed to lose how many former pit areas?

The coal industry has gone, we don't burn coal anymore it really needs a differing mindset in the North, perhaps it might now change least the populace there have voted for it!..

Chillyourbeans · 20/12/2019 17:07

So utterly fucked off with Northerners being referred to as Turkeys voting from Christmas. Miner's daughter here, grew up in Wansbeck (the constituency Ian Lavery came so close to losing) in the 80s. We lived through the year long strike - Thatcher and the Tories brought us to our knees; you know things are bad when you're receiving food parcels from Russian miners at Christmas. Labour needs to take a long hard look at itself - because something has gone very badly wrong when the people who felt such a visceral hatred for Thatcher that they threw guys of her on their bonfires are now turning to Boris for answers.

kateandme · 20/12/2019 17:10

this shit does my brain in.not a helpful post.sorry

Teateaandmoretea · 20/12/2019 17:10

It isn't about north just most people in mining areas are bright enough to know that coal mining wouldn't be a viable proposition in the amounts of the 70s in 2019.

It's the London labour lot who like to harp on about it without any real plan to actually make it better.

I really really hope that the next a labour leader is from elsewhere in the country (or at least engages meaningfully outside Islington)

adaline · 20/12/2019 17:11

Money has always been primarily concentrated in the south - because that's where London and the capital is. If Carlisle or Durham or Newcastle was the capital of the UK, the picture would be very different.

derxa · 20/12/2019 17:11

,

mindproject · 20/12/2019 17:13

Chilly - maybe you just need to wait and see if Brexit improves your life or not before deciding whether the phrase 'Turkies voting for Christmas' is accurate.

mindproject · 20/12/2019 17:14

*Turkeys

scaryteacher · 20/12/2019 17:16

Love the use of French Guiana as being in the EU.....doesn't seem right somehow.

Patroclus · 20/12/2019 17:20

Not in Hull we didnt

Patroclus · 20/12/2019 17:25

Yes dusty, students are well known for voting Tory.....

It works the other way actually, many studies have shown higher intelligence tend to be more left wing.

DaydreamingDay · 20/12/2019 17:27

The North of Ireland at 8. We need Irish unity NOW.

Patroclus · 20/12/2019 17:30

Labour did a hell of a lot of good in their last stint actually. And the peole local to me could tell you why they vote labour, desite patronising southern shit about 'tribalism'. Our Labour MPs are very visible and active localy, whilst our Tory local has spent the last few years trying to get a hostel moved from near the expensive houses.....

Chloemol · 20/12/2019 17:32

This is from 2014.

The one thing I hate about MN is all the skating of conservatives, either voters or the government. It just goes to show how intolerant people actually are, it’s there way or its wrong

Conservatives won, get over it

Chloemol · 20/12/2019 17:32

Slating not skating

Teateaandmoretea · 20/12/2019 17:33

Money has always been primarily concentrated in the south - because that's where London and the capital is. If Carlisle or Durham or Newcastle was the capital of the UK, the picture would be very different.

In Scotland one of the wealthiest parts is around Aberdeen.

Historically there was a lot of money in fishing, agriculture and other industry.

There are plenty of well off places not in the south so it clearly can be done. Equally there are deprived towns in the south and even more bizarrely deprived parts of London.

A start might be to stop accepting that the capital has the best schools and start funding the rest of the country properly!

It makes no sense at all that in 2019 with fibre broadband that we cannot turn into a modern economy that has opportunities for all.

It is certainly not something to accept as 'how it is' for the future of our children.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 20/12/2019 17:33

oh Please, go away

HoHoHoik · 20/12/2019 17:36

Labour got complacent. I've lived here for decades and have never once had our old Labour MP or any of his representatives knock at my door, have never seen him at any community events, never even had a leaflet through the door from him yet he still expected to be voted in each time because he was one of the good old boys, a former miner, "loves the area". He did nothing for the area, employed his wife as his PA on the maximum allowable salary, and claimed a council flat for his son fitted out to a far higher standard than the usual council fixtures and fittings.

The new Conservative MP has loved and worked in the area for over 30 years. He was out knocking on doors, he was at community litter picks, he attended town hall events, he had videos on social media showing what he loves about the area and what he wants to change and - most importantly - how he plans to change it. He was engaged and interested, the previous MP wasn't (and unfortunately it was his replacement candidate that paid for his errors as he was retiring but she lost the election).

I didn't vote for this new MP but he seems fairly passionate about the issues he campaigned on and has stated he will be getting his local office up and running as soon as possible because he wants to hear from his constituents about the changes they want to see. He wants to improve transport in the area as it will help improve employment and opportunities, which is something I actually do agree with. So while I didn't choose him, I am stuck with him along with every else who didn't vote for him (and those who did) and he hasn't been in the job long enough yet for me to be able to say whether he is good for the region or bad.

The turkeys voting for Christmas thing comes from absolute frustration and downright depression that no-one can say how any normal persons life will improve due to brexit. For me personally I am pretty confident I’ll be ok but I don’t want to see the already struggling, struggle more. Im also very concerned about the level of debt the UK is in - £65k for every taxpayer. That is likely to get worse. I will be depressed about the result for months let alone a week! I hope BJ proves me wrong but on his past performance that’s very unlikely. It’s all spin and lies.

LillianGish · 20/12/2019 17:47

Brexiteers in the north (and elsewhere) have been persuaded that their woes are due to the EU and nothing to do with the austerity policies of the previous Tory government. It will be interesting to see what happens once we have left - and the government has no-one scapegoat. A lot of leave areas actually did rather well out of EU subsidies - now they'll be relying on the Tories throwing them a bone. By the time the penny drops it will be too late to turn the clock back. So yes - turkeys voting for Christmas.
