Boris Watch - Thread 1

chomalungma · 17/12/2019 19:11

Well, it's been done for Trump since he got elected.
No doubt some people will complain it's on AIBU - but it's a place with traffic.

So let's use this to keep an eye on the changes under Boris.

First Thing:

Boris introduces clause in the withdrawal agreement so the UK must leave with WTO rules if there is no trade agreement with the EU by the end of 2020

www.theguardian.com/business/2019/dec/17/pound-slides-to-pre-election-levels-in-wake-of-bid-to-outlaw-brexit-extension

Feel free to comment and add things that you notice changing. The Trump threads are at 97 now.

am still waiting for any 'Boris' supporters to give a clear reason why they are so happy he won, without any hashtags, slogans or Corbyn mentions. I'm genuinely waiting. I'm not particularly a BJ supporter but the idea of Jeremy Corbyn as PM absolutely horrified me. What is there about that point of view don't you get?

Alsohuman · 20/12/2019 13:02

Once again this is about the current government and PM. Why is the only answer anyone who supports it has is “Yes, but Corbyn ...” He’s gone, over and done with. Now back to Johnson’s performance.

CendrillonSings · 20/12/2019 13:04

All right, Alsohuman, I take your point, not least because you really seem to get where your side went wrong despite obviously wanting them to win very much. I’ll try and stay off here till the New Year at least, so the best of Christmas spirit to all, political friend and foe alike.

Andrew Bailey as Bank of England governor is
bad for the many and good for the few

this is how things will be

Peregrina · 20/12/2019 15:18

I was at least pleased to find that a cousin of DH's in a north west town who was all in favour of Leave has made it clear that she values the NHS more than Brexit. Too late to save her seat, but good to know where her true sympathies lie.

chomalungma · 20/12/2019 17:37

Interesting headlines in the Daily Mail about the removal of the concessions about the child refugees and worker's rights.

www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-7813423/Boris-Johnson-accused-direct-attack-child-refugees-Brexit-law-change.html

We'll see if he keeps those promises.

@CendrillonSings reminds me a bit of kids on a school trip to Germany stomping around the streets chanting "We won the war" "We won the war"

chomalungma · 20/12/2019 17:59

Well, this is going to be a long period with lots of change.

I think it will be interesting to keep track, to see how Brexit goes as well as the rest of the promises.

I am in 2 minds about this - on the one hand, I want him to fuck up and show that his whole plan is a disaster. But on the other hand, I don't want this country to be fucked up and I don't want the region where I come from to lose out - I want to see positive local changes.

So they are going to be scrutinised.

Very keen on finding disabled people FIT for work.
Not so keen on actually enabling it so they can GET to work.

ListeningQuietly · 20/12/2019 18:08

If by some miracle Johnson ( American slang for penis ) manages to create a Brexit which does not make my family poorer
I'd be delighted

Iamagree · 20/12/2019 18:15

OP and other posters: "OK, so a Conservative government's been elected, maybe not what some of us wanted, it would be good to keep a close eye, and record how this goes, especially given the various made up blatantly impossible ambitious and populist claims made in the campaign and the manifesto, to hold the Johnson government to account ..Here are some of the concerns already, from the Queen's speech etc""
Certain Other Posters: "Yeah Corbyn's rubbish, he was going to have a Stalinist dictatorship, definitely. You lot are sore losers."
Who's a little obsessed with Corbyn?

ssd · 20/12/2019 19:12

@dexra, as I said above, I'm waiting to hear why tory voters are so pleased, no mentioning Corbyn, as you did in your reply to me. I want to hear specifically why tory voters are pleased to have another tory government in power. Cendrllion above said they are pleased as it means no change for them. I get that, though frankly why they are pleased with this country and its levels of poor and homelessness I don't know. Still, they face mean answer, nit just I'm pleased as Corbyn didn't win
As a pp said, Corbyn lost and will go soon
He is no more, so stop rehashing him please.

Walkingdeadfangirl · 20/12/2019 19:15

Well I have been watching Boris today and he has swiftly got his EU withdrawal agreement past a vote with a majority of 124. So he is already keeping his promises and getting Brexit done.

#GBD 😆

MidnightCircus · 20/12/2019 19:17

Ok. I'm pleased the Tories won as I thought their manifesto was less likely to bankrupt the country.

HeIenaDove · 20/12/2019 19:20

@Walkingdeadfangirl OK Boomer.

chomalungma · 20/12/2019 19:23

So he is already keeping his promises and getting Brexit done

Not exactly difficult with a large majority.

This thread will hopefully be able to monitor the trade deals that get done and any changes in regulations etc that take place.

Not this bollocks again.

It's a bit rich you implying other people are stupid when you still haven't twigged that attitudes like yours were a big factor in Labour's loss. You don't win votes by telling people that they're stupid racist gammon boomer scum who need to shut up and let their betters dictate what is best for them because they know better. Multi millionaire London luvvies patronising working class northerners with lectures about socialism went down like a bucket of cold sick. You don't win votes or friends by insulting and patronising people. The fact so many left wingers still haven't grasped that shows exactly who is stupid here.

Ditto your tiresome fucking trope about 'nobody has been able to tell me a good reason'. Remainers and left wingers have been doing that crap since the referendum. I've seen many, many Conservatives and Leavers being asked what their reasons were and giving thoughtful and intelligent answers just for the same people to be going around saying the same thing. As a Leaver or a Tory online we'd be asked to justify ourselves several times a day by the left but they just never listened, weren't interested and were often incredibly abusive so people gave up responding. This changed nobodies mind and just alienated voters. Again, the question is who are the stupid ones here. It's basic knowledge that there are pros and cons of right or left governments alike. Ditto pros and cons of being in the EU. I covered both in my politics A'Level in 1996 if you don't know those things it's not for you to demand your political opponents to fill your knowledge gap. Pretending there could never possibly possibly be a single positive reason that anyone should deviate from left wing dogma is not only spectacularly dim, it made left wingers look like swivel eyed fanatical cult like loons who think you hold some universal and eternal truth and are unable to tolerate any dissent.

I live in the north and many, many people are livid at the way the left wing elite ignored us and took our votes for granted.

Until the left realise they can't insult people and treat them like shit then expect them to vote for their parties they will remain unelectable.

MidnightCircus · 20/12/2019 20:36

ibiza that's also a great reason, I fully agree with your post! Beautifully put. Its so patronising how we are held to account, have to "justify" why we votes a certain way and "don't know any better". The left is not the only or best way, it's simply a different way. I'm also fed up with being told I'm right wing. I'm not. I simply voted Tory. Not the same thing at all

MidnightCircus · 20/12/2019 20:36

Voted* not votes. Stupid fingers can't type

Peregrina · 20/12/2019 20:56

What baffles me when people are singing the praises of 'Boris' is how they can't see that he's betraying the old values of Conservatism. I can't imagine a Tory from 40 years ago saying Fuck Business. I can't see why the Boris apologists are not questioning why a number of decent Tories stood down at this election and why people like Major and Heseltine are saying that it's not the party they represented any more.

HeIenaDove · 20/12/2019 21:03

If Tony Newton was still alive he would feel the same as Heseltine. I met Newton back in the 90s.

Alsohuman · 20/12/2019 21:46

I'm also fed up with being told I'm right wing. I'm not. I simply voted Tory. Not the same thing at all

If you voted last week for the most right wing government of my six and a half decade lifetime, you’re deluded.

ssd · 20/12/2019 22:05

@Ibiza2015, your post explains the divide between Scotland and England. Up here, many people feel shafted they have done for years. But they know a Conservative vote will never solve their problems. For some reason, you feel forgotten by Labour but see a tory vote as a way to improve your lives. Up here we know it won't, we'd rather not vote than vote for the Westminster establishment. I genuinely can't understand why a working class northerner in England would. Its time we got independence, there's too much of a gulf between the working classes now.

BeardedMum · 20/12/2019 22:15

How can you vote for the Tories if you are not right wing. It does not make sense.

Antigonads · 20/12/2019 22:19

There you go again.
