To think 19 isn't too cold for heating

DH is constantly turning the heating up saying he feels cold. Any more than 19 and I get too warm, but he would prefer 22, night and day. I only wear leggings and a t/shirt, he will wear a couple of layers and still complain. We use a summer duvet, we have it set at 20.5 as the compromise but neither of us are comfortable with that temp. What temp do you think is reasonable. It's a new build that retains heat very well.

Mines on 23°.
I'm in warm clothes but would be happy at a higher temp.

lisasimpsonssaxophone · 17/12/2019 18:31

I’m someone who is generally too warm but I’m baffled by the temperatures usually cited on mumsnet where anything above 16 degrees is apparently balmy and anything over 20 is tropical!

22 seems ideal to me but I know people here will say they’d be walking around in their underwear at that temperature.

ThreeAnkleBiters · 17/12/2019 18:31

I think it depends a lot on where the thermostat is located. In my old house anything over about 18 was roasting (I think the thermostat was the coldest point in the house). In my current house it's the opposite.

That said if you're hot and he's cold isn't it better for him to wear a jumper? I say this as the person who's always cold. I'm currently sitting in a huge sweater while DC run around in just their T-shirts and PJ bottoms.

donkey86 · 17/12/2019 18:32

We have ours on 19.5. It’s easier to warm up (layers etc) than to cool down, so I’d say the one who wants it lower should get their way. Feeling too warm is so unpleasant.

cocomelon23 · 17/12/2019 18:32

Mine is set to 18. Anything higher and it makes me feel sick.

MrOnionsBumperRoller · 17/12/2019 18:33

19 is hot in our (very well insulated mid terrace ) house. We sleep on 17 with windows open currently (midlands).

MirandaWest · 17/12/2019 18:34

Ours is at 18 at its highest and goes off at about 10. None of us like sleeping when it’s too warm (DH and I sleep with the window open)

Oblomov19 · 17/12/2019 18:38

Ours is set at 19. Always has. Never moves.

TheSpottedZebra · 17/12/2019 18:39

There probably shouldn't be, but there's a big difference to what the thermostat is set at, and what a thermometer reads in my house.
19 on a thermometer would be fine for me, but I'd need to set the thermostat higher to get that.

ooooohbetty · 17/12/2019 18:39

Mine hasn't been on since this morning. It's so old I don't have a thermostat. I'm wearing pj's and a blanket whilst sitting on the sofa and I'm cool but not cold. I much prefer it on the cold side and I hate being too hot.

doadeer · 17/12/2019 18:43

I would be cold at 19 degrees... I think 22 is nice so I'm with your DH. I also hate being cold and don't mind feeling too warm

ArlenesWoodBurningStove · 17/12/2019 18:44

The report mentioned in this BBC article suggests we should all be setting our heating to 19.

granadagirl · 17/12/2019 18:46

Would not do in my house
Daytime 20.5*
After 4pm 22/23*

Alarae · 17/12/2019 18:46

Ours is set to 18C and I feel like I am roasting.

However I am quite literally cooking a baby at the moment, so I relish going outside in 2C weather...

Iwantacookie · 17/12/2019 18:48

Mines on about 18 but I knock it down to 15 over night

AllergicToAMop · 17/12/2019 18:48

I have mine on 18.5 in a hallway which makes rooms 19.5-20.5.
Any warmer and I am changing into shorts.
I don't deal well with warmBlush
I am secretly a snowman

blackcat86 · 17/12/2019 18:49

We have the heating set to 17 officially but because it's in a drafty hallway it's not really an accurate reflection of the house temp. We use gro eggs as we have a toddler and find under about 18.7/18.8 starts to feel a bit chilly and over 19.5 maybe a little warm. By 20.3 I'm sweating and realising I've forgotten to turn the heating off. We keep it warm for toddler DD, if not I'd keep it at 17 and just put a big onesie on.

Kensie · 17/12/2019 18:50

23 in winter. But this is mumsnet so anything over 12° is too hot and you're single handedly causing global warming.Smile

HeyMac · 17/12/2019 18:51

I'm a cold person, it really is miserable.
I've got mine set to 20 and wear sheepskin lined boots and a fleece in the house too.

BlueThursday · 17/12/2019 18:51

We can set each room individually so our bedroom is 17, DDs room 20 and the remainder of the house 18.

We only close the windows during high winds

FizzyIce · 17/12/2019 18:51

Ours goes on if it goes under 17 and we turn it off completely at night and it comes on at 7am for an hour .
My dh is the one who’s always warm but I get a bit chilly if it’s 18.5 and will boost the heating (I love Hive)
Luckily an hour is usually plenty as we also live in a new build so it heats up pretty quick

Dawninglory · 17/12/2019 18:51

I'm always cold compared to DP and kids! Temp about 21deg, but often they're in t-shirts whilst I'm in a jumper!

Lweji · 17/12/2019 18:52

Make him do house work. He'll warm up soon enough.

More, or less, seriously, the first question people should ask prospective partners is optimal temperature, but everyone forgets it.

cardibach · 17/12/2019 18:52

19.5 here, but I don’t trust thermostats, so who knows what the temperature really is?

foodandwine89 · 17/12/2019 18:52

way too cold. 22 at the very least needed
