To think 19 isn't too cold for heating

DH is constantly turning the heating up saying he feels cold. Any more than 19 and I get too warm, but he would prefer 22, night and day. I only wear leggings and a t/shirt, he will wear a couple of layers and still complain. We use a summer duvet, we have it set at 20.5 as the compromise but neither of us are comfortable with that temp. What temp do you think is reasonable. It's a new build that retains heat very well.

mine is at 17. We have a newborn and any higher and out bedroom gets too warm. My mum was not amused when she came to visit. Grin

Treaclepie19 · 17/12/2019 19:28

Ours is 19. I feel more of the cold than DH so although I'd like it over 20, it makes sense for me to be the one in pjs and blankets.

scaredycatz · 17/12/2019 19:28

Ours is set at 16 but rarely even gets up to that because our house is so poorly insulated, single brick walls etc Sad

LeekMunchingSheepShagger · 17/12/2019 19:29

Ours stays at 18. Any higher than that and the bedrooms get boiling hot.

TracyBeakerSoYeah · 17/12/2019 19:30

Around 19 - 20 during the day & then down to 18 at night.
The boiler is set to constant so the heating only kicks in if the temperature in the house drops below the set temperature on the thermostat.
The heating doesn't really come on that much as the house never gets too cold.
A plumber years ago suggested we do this as it saves money because the house never gets too cold compared to having the heating on at set times & the house getting really cold so the heating has to stay on longer to get the house warm enough again.
Our bills are much cheaper compared to when we had the heating on timed.
Another one here who has to have the window in the bedroom open all year round (I think the only time it got closed was in the Arctic Winter of 2008 when the temperature was down to minus 12 at night)
I feel like I'm being suffocated if I can't get any fresh air in the bedroom & then have trouble sleeping.
I'm lucky that I can like the weather he colder the better as I realise not everyone is so able to.

I would find 19c as the actual temperature in the room as being too cold. It would make my joints hurt. I also hate being bundled up in lots of clothes and don't like wearing tights or socks in the house. I grew up with no central heating for much of my childhood and vowed as soon as I could afford it I would have a warm house and not have to wear thick layers inside.

I want to be warm and cosy sat in my PJs in the evening. So probably around 22c in the actual room - its also what I have my car set too.

At night time I would want it a couple of degrees or so colder. We don't actually have the heating on overnight - goes off around 10pm and comes on around 6am - as our bedrooms get too warm and I dont like to be hot in bed overnight.

We have a 3 storey new build and it gets very warm. Only problem is the thermostat being on the ground floor. If it is set too high the middle and top floor are very warm. So we have it set lower to keep the living room on middle floor at around 22ish. We have a Dyson fan heater to give the kitchen diner a little bit of a boost.

YouRemindMeOfTheBabelfish · 17/12/2019 19:31

I have to go to 19 or 19.5 to make sure the boiler goes on if it's a little cold, like a boost. We've not actually programmed our thermostat since moving into this home. If I programmed it, it would be to come on at 18 or 19.

But I'm one of those weirdos who cannot deal with warmth.

Greywalls12 · 17/12/2019 19:33

Mines on 23 and I've got a thick jumper and under a blanket and I'm only just at a comfortable temperature! I really feel the cold! DH walks around in shorts and t-shirt

newbingepisodes · 17/12/2019 19:34

Mine only goes on when it gets to below 14 and then it's off again by 17/18 which is perfectly warm enough for us.

passthetea · 17/12/2019 19:35

Mines on 21 day and night. Permanently. I'd rather be hungry than cold Confused

PotteringAlong · 17/12/2019 19:36

Ours is set at 15, boost it on for 15 mins if we feel chilly, it’s been on 3 times today and isn’t on now! But I will have a hot water bottle on the sofa tonight

ArkAtEee · 17/12/2019 19:39

Has he been tested for anaemia/thyroid disorder? Those are famously conditions where the sufferer is cold all the time.

misspiggy19 · 17/12/2019 19:43

19’would be too cold in my house

WellTidy · 17/12/2019 19:43

20.5 here. That extra .5 is important, it is the difference between feeling a bit cool and feeling neither warm nor cold so just right.

I turn the heating off completely a couple of hours before we go to bed (adults, I mean) and just make sure I close doors when someone goes in or out of a room. That keeps it warm enough.

And then I turn it on when I get up in the morning and it stays on all day, as there is someone here pretty much all day every day.

speakout · 17/12/2019 19:47

Depends what you are doing.

I don't use a thermostat or timer for heating. I rarely have heating on overnight, outside is minus 5 or so. Then I will set it for 15 overnight.
Day time temperature requirements are so variable.
I may have come back from a morning gym class, then strip beds, hoover and mop.
I really wouldn't want any heating on for that.
Or the family may be tired and having a restful evening, people taking baths, watching a movie etc. so I will set a temperature of 22 degrees for a few hours.
I don't need the house to be heated to the same temperature constantly.

KittenVsXmastree · 17/12/2019 19:48

Our thermostat is set at 15..... Most of the house is at 19 (except the hall where the thermostat is, I guess). I'm sitting in a jumper, DS is in shorts and teeshirt. The heating will go off any minute (8pm), and stay off til 6am tomorrow.

giggleshizz · 17/12/2019 19:57

Maybe be is on 20-22 day and night in the winter (down to 19 when I'm out). Not a well insulated house so it feels colder I think. I hate being cold so would rather pay more for heating and feel comfortable

Josette77 · 17/12/2019 20:01

19 is too cold for me. 22-23 during the day. 17 to sleep at night.

Armadillostoes · 17/12/2019 20:02

Eeek! As far as I am concerned 23 is the minimum comfortable temperature. I would say your house your choice, but obviously that doesn't work as it is your poor (freezing) DP's home too.

goingtoneedabiggercar · 17/12/2019 20:06

I have my thermostat at about 19 but it's behind the front door so is probably the coldest room in the house, by the time the hall gets to 19 the rest of the house is pretty toasty

Paintedmaypole · 17/12/2019 20:10

19 is too cold for me. Iam happier at 22 but I turn the radiator off in the bedroom.

MrsTerryPratchett · 17/12/2019 20:13

19 is bloody freezing and miserable, hurts your hands. 22-28 is about my comfortable temperature range.

28 is a hot sunny day. Not warm, hot. Mind you, I'm open windows at night all year round so I'm not a good barometer.

StinkyWizleteets · 17/12/2019 20:14

We don’t have a thermostat but when we did I needed about 23degrees. My partner is like a radiator and doesn’t think to ever put the heating on. I don’t like the heating on overnight and if it’s been on in the evening don’t really need it. I control each room at the radiator So upstairs is always cooler than down.

Allthepinkunicorns · 17/12/2019 20:19

I have mine on at 21.5 and I can tell when dh has turned it down. I switch the heating off at night though as It gets to hot and stuffy. I only have it on at night if it snows to stop the pipes from freezing.

MyNewBearTotoro · 17/12/2019 20:21

Mines at 25 and I’m in lots of layers and under a blanket. It’s a cold and draughty house with poor insulation so I find the temperature the thermostat thinks it is and the temperature it actually feels vary hugely.
