Great idea @musicinspring1

paranoidmum2 · 17/12/2019 22:02

An old lady had an amazing one that I saw once, it didn’t look like the usual ones you see, very modern. She said she has bought it in Aldi years ago so I couldn’t get one.

Amazon has a good selection.

gamerchick · 17/12/2019 22:04

Do it, I loved mine. The problem is they're not built to last. If you're fill them more than half way often then the wheel can come off and roll down the street. That's fun Grin

Vulpine · 17/12/2019 22:15

Posie - so if youre not walking far, even less reason to need a trolley

RiddleyW · 17/12/2019 22:17

I’ve been meaning to get one, I carry loads to work and I’m worried about my back.

Faffandahalf · 17/12/2019 22:26

I live in London and was in Shoreditch over the weekend. I didn’t see a single trolley (previous poster said they’re all over shoreditch?)
I’ve been to a few shopping centre and oxford st and hardly saw anyone who wasn’t obviously a tourist and under 70 with one either.

Where are all the London people using them?!

I would love one. (Nearly 40) but the elderly image of them is off putting. I already feel a bit haggard and this would finish me off.

Having said that some lovely ones linked. Grin

Faffandahalf · 17/12/2019 22:27

I meant I’ve been to oxford st and some shopping centres in the last few weeks.

(When will MN get the bloody edit function)

willowmelangell · 17/12/2019 22:31

Get one. You won't look back. You fill it up at the till. No buying bags anymore. You will get your money back.
One tip though. Approach kerbs straight on. It doesn't damage the wheels.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 17/12/2019 22:34

I've got one but it's shit. Don't make the mistake I did when I bought mine. I got a really trendy looking one from Habitat but unfortunately it doesn't have a rigid frame and handle, the bag bit is all soft. This means you have to support the weight of the stuff in it and although it has wheels, it's still heavy.

Get a proper granny one. Tartan, strong handle, sturdy frame. 👍

Topseyt · 17/12/2019 22:38

Just do it. I am 53 now, but I bought mine around 5 years ago, possibly longer. I couldn't give a shit what anyone else thinks. I like it.

I found the gap after children outgrowing the buggy to be hard, even though I do drive. Suddenly you are without the buggy and it's integral shopping basket and expected to just carry everything while also managing potentially still young children.

Get one. Mine has pictures of yellow New York taxis, red London buses and images of various capital cities all over it. I like it.

WellErrr · 17/12/2019 22:41

Do you pull them or push them?

GidgetGirl · 17/12/2019 22:42

I’m 35 and I’ve had this one (from Ikea) for a few years. I’m usually on my bike, but when I’m not and I know I’ll be needing to carry a lot of stuff, it’s perfect. It’s never even crossed my mind that it’s a weird thing for a younger/fit person to use.. Just practical, innit?

Ginandsonic · 17/12/2019 22:47

I'm 32 and I got mine a year or two ago. I use public transport so it's great for getting my food shopping, and in the summer I load it up for trips to the beach or picnics.

kevintheorangecarrot · 18/12/2019 06:18

I'm going to buy one. I drive but I want to start walking and get bits of shopping here and there. I live about 40 min from the supermarket.

Watchagotcha · 18/12/2019 06:59

I live in France. Everyone has them for car free shopping. So useful. Great for dragging picnic / games to the park in summer too.

Watchagotcha · 18/12/2019 07:04

@DianaT1969

In France they either get used as the shopping basket then unloaded / reloaded at the till. Or they get left (empty) near the tills and people nip through and reclaim them once their shopping is in the conveyer belt.

Roselilly36 · 18/12/2019 07:06

I have been using a trolley for about 8 years, due to my disability I can’t carry bags of heavy shopping I started with the pull behind you type, and then moved on two a four wheeled, trendy Carlett one, it looks just like a buggy, I am often stopped and asked where I just my trolley from, the handle is adjustable and it looks modern. As others have said, it’s only here that people struggle on the continent trolleys are used by most people. Go for it OP.

Cremebrule · 18/12/2019 07:25

I do like the idea but feel too middle aged. If you’re a student you can get away with anything and the trolleys are normally an older lady thing. But, when my buggy days are over it’s so tempted.

CatsMother66 · 18/12/2019 16:46

I’m on my third! I take it on picnics to the park, to the beach as well as shopping. So much easier than carrying bags. Loads of Mums use them in my town and they come in funky designs. Don’t care what other people think.

BumpyNugget · 18/12/2019 19:29

Never not had one. Used to even pull my mum's when I was a child. As a non driver, I wouldn't be able to cope without one. DH even uses it.

As we both say, "who the hell is paying attention to us in a shop, nobody". It really is a strangely common thought that everybody in the supermarket is observing them, like they are super gorgeous or a pop star. Nobody cares and if they do, they are the odd ones.

Anyway, this is my current one.

It looks a bit like a big rucksack on wheels. I chose it because the frame is all metal construction so no plastic joints to snap. It has a zip nearly all the way around the front which you unzip to increase the capacity which is very useful. It has a slight tendency to fall forwards if you put a very heavy load in but keeping a hand on the handle lightly on the handle is enough to stop. You would not believe the amount of stuff you can get into this thing. Just got to be careful not to overdo it if you need to get on a bus or train because you still have to lift it briefly to get it on.

I love mine.

katseyes7 · 18/12/2019 19:34

My best friend has one. She has arthritis and hypermobility and she doesn't drive. She's in her 40s.
l've actually contemplated getting one, as l have the same conditions, but l drive and l don't do 'big shops'. l'm hanging fire for now, but if l feel l need one, l'll get one.

This is mine. Absolute godsend when I'm doing an Aldi shop and need to get the bus.

DancingPyjamas · 18/12/2019 20:10

I've had one for donkeys years. I wouldn't be without it, especially when I'm shopping in town.
When it's full, I put a bag of shopping on the top with the handles looped over the trolley handle.
I can hop on and off the bus with it, no problems.
I even brought the dog home from the vets in it following her operation. Vet is only a 10 minute walk away, but dog is too heavy to carry and was sleepy after anaesthetic.
My current model is neon pink.
