To think Ben Stokes shouldn't have won Sports Personality of the Year?

Personality: The combination of characteristics or qualities that form an individual's distinctive character.

It's just two months since those photos of him grabbing his wife's face, allegedly playfully, were released.

Am I missing something or is personality purely about their sports performance?

What he did over the summer for cricket was spectacular.

His wife said those photos were misinterpreted. That may or may not be true but we can only go on her word.

He behaved with huge dignity when tabloid scum went digging around to find out his family tragedy from before he was born.

On the field he is a player of great integrity. He tried to give away run that were lawfully awarded when his bat accidentally hit the ball running in which ended up winning us the World Cup.

BIWI · 16/12/2019 11:28

There's a clue in the title of the award ...

JacquesHammer · 16/12/2019 11:29

I don’t think he was more deserving than the other entrants whose efforts were a more individual contribution.

He was a part of a team (which quite rightly won team of the year!)

tillytrotter1 · 16/12/2019 11:31

Since when did being judged Not Guilty by a jury of one's peers mean nothing? You sound like my late Mother, no-one was ever Not Guilty, they 'Got away with it'.
I wondered why they bothered holding SPOTY at all though, it was done and dusted in Summer with the WC victory!

TheTruthAboutLove · 16/12/2019 11:32

His heroics in the summer at the Cricket World Cup will be something that will most likely never be repeated.

It's Sports Personality, not Sainthood of the year - he's massively deserving of this award. When the tabloids went after his grieving family over a tragedy years ago he acted with dignity and called them out like they deserved, and they got the backlash they deserved too.

For me, he's a very worthy winner and I wouldn't have chosen anyone else.

Goodnightjude1 · 16/12/2019 11:34

I think he thoroughly deserved it.

JacquesHammer · 16/12/2019 11:34

I always find it a shame that the programme has changed the way it has.

It used to be an interesting look back at the year across the whole sporting world. Now it’s a bizarre nod to some sports more than others.

SerenDippitty · 16/12/2019 11:37

Being Welsh I wanted AWJ to win it. Gutted he didn’t even come second or third.

ballsdeep · 16/12/2019 11:37

Me too. I love AWJ.

BlueJava · 16/12/2019 11:43

YANBU, I voted for Dina Asher-Smith. I think she's been massively dedicated and seems lovely. But for me the Ben Stokes pics meant there's no way I'd have voted for him.

Floralnomad · 16/12/2019 11:45

If it’s based on sport then he rightly won , I think they should remove the word personality from the award . What amazes me is who votes for Lewis Hamilton , I’m sure he is probably quite talented but a lot of it must be down to having one of the best cars .

nanbread · 16/12/2019 11:45

I suppose I'm asking - what constitutes a sports personality?

Surely it should be called sportsperson of the year if it's just about sporting prowess?

How does the personality element fit in? My interpretation is someone who is a good role model and someone to respect and look up to. Personally his general behaviour makes me question that.

@tillytrotter1 I've not mentioned his court case, purposefully.

He does have a well documented history of violent behaviour, for example breaking bones punching lockers etc - perhaps not on the field but in the sporting arena. Maybe he's now got that under control...

I wanted Lewis Hamilton to win. Just how many times does he have to be F1 World Champion to actually win it?!

Choccyp1g · 16/12/2019 11:50

Lewis Hamilton did win it, in 2014

midnightmisssuki · 16/12/2019 11:57

He was amazing - he deserves it because he was the best sportsman. Mind you - Lewis deserved it to.

JacquesHammer · 16/12/2019 11:57

he deserves it because he was the best sportsman

That’s really telling.

ilovesooty · 16/12/2019 12:01

He's a deserving winner in my view.

Livedandlearned · 16/12/2019 12:08

I wanted AWJ to win too. He's an amazing role model.

steff13 · 16/12/2019 12:08

I suppose I'm asking - what constitutes a sports personality?

A person who's famous for playing a sport is a sports personality.

charley50 · 16/12/2019 12:09

Lewis Hamilton has one it. I think they should check they pay their taxes in the UK before they can win.

charley50 · 16/12/2019 12:10

Won it, not one it Blush

AllergicToAMop · 16/12/2019 12:14

The meaning of the word personality is also a "famous person"...

Sharonthetotallyinsane · 16/12/2019 12:25

I find it an odd concept. Someone who has won awards for sport, wins an award for winning those awards. I only saw some of it because I was expecting His Dark Materials to be on.
