To think that Stephen Kinnock should run for labour leader?

I'm a leftie but I think to stand any chance to appeal to a broader range of voters labour needs to reign it in a bit.

Mr Kinnock is much more left of centre, campaigned to remain in the ref but was of the opinion that we must leave to preserve democracy.

Thoughts?

I can think of worse choices, but Kinnock is right up there in terms of terrible ideas.

marvellousnightforamooncup · 15/12/2019 12:10

Dear God no! I've voted Labour all my life but I'd draw the line at that.

Unusualusernames · 15/12/2019 12:11

Absolutely not. Have you seen that documentary about the run up to the last election? Not unless you want another twenty years of the tories 😔

ElfAndSafeKey · 15/12/2019 12:16

According to Boris, Brexit will be done in a year, so it doesn't matter if the next leader supported leave, remain or second ref.
They do need to be "likeable", populist and have some decent sound bites though it seems.

scaryteacher · 15/12/2019 12:20

I did wonder if Miliband D would come back from the U.S. and stand again. I presume he would be a shoe in now for the leadership. Had he and not his brother been elected leader, then Labour would not be where they are now. I couldn't understand why Ed got it and not David.

ThatssomebadhatHarry · 15/12/2019 12:24

It doesn’t matter democracy as we know it is dead. We are now living a dictatorship. Whoever they have will be attacked and lied about. The electorate will lap it up. They convinced the people a man who spent his entire life fighting against injustice and who spend his younger years at apartheid marches is a racist. Meanwhile the man who said black women have water melon smiles among other vile things is the man of the people.

Then the sheeple come online and gloat about their ‘win’.

Tolleshunt · 15/12/2019 12:26

Umunna wasn’t pushed out. He left because he was more interested in his own power grab than the people of the country or the party that got him into parliament.

Eh? He left because of the Momentum/ Corbyn/ McDonnell suicidal lunacy. Which makes him one of the more sensible ones, in my book.

I think Kinnock is not impressive or charismatic enough, in addition to having too much baggage because of his parents. Of course, he should be judged solely on his own merits, but we all know the hysterical right-wing press won’t do so.

I would prefer to see Keir Starmer or Yvette Cooper in charge. Or ideally, either David Milliband or Andy Burnham to come back to parliament and take up the leadership.

We need a competent-seeming moderate to take the party back to the centre/left. No other offering stands a chance of getting in.

Gingernaut · 15/12/2019 12:27

Kinnock Junior is part of the current, Corbynite Labour Party.

No.

For now, he can support a candidate, but he needs to back off from being a nominee.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2019 12:27

The sandwich did blast Ed

I’m for Keir he has that no nonsense vibe

Tolleshunt · 15/12/2019 12:27

Sadly, I think there is much truth in this. Whoever the Daily Mail takes agin has a really rough ride. If they have any baggage at all relating to anything the Fail can spin as being Marxist/will result in higher taxes, that person will never be PM.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 15/12/2019 12:27

It does to me. Lexiters are tainted and will not re-unite the party.

They do need to be "likeable", populist and have some decent sound bites though it seems

Sadly I agree, and this is why I think we are fucked as a nation.

My first choice would be Yvette Cooper, but realise she’s also tainted with Blairism. I’d get behind Jess Phillips, but the misogynists really hate her. David Lammy is great, but won’t appeal to racists. Probably has to be Keir Starmer.

SpringFan · 15/12/2019 12:30

Ed got it over David because he had union support. In particular, my union Unite. Not that I ever had the chance to say where our votes should be cast in the Labour Party leadership election. Never had, and I go back to the days of ASTMS.

BowermansNose · 15/12/2019 12:31

I like Jess Philips at this stage - I think she is able to go up against Johnson, and comes across as a "normal" person. Honestly, I don't know too much about her political positions, but in the political era we're in, that doesn't seem to matter too much.

BowermansNose · 15/12/2019 12:35

They do need to be "likeable", populist and have some decent sound bites though it seems.

Agree, I posted a similar point. We're not at the stage where actual policies seem to really matter. It sadly seems to be about personalities (who would you rather go for beer with)

Tolleshunt · 15/12/2019 12:36

I agree. He also comes across as v clever (which he is), but not in an off-putting way. He could quote Latin too, he’s just not twatty enough to do so. He might appeal to the type of voter who thinks Boris is an intellectual heavyweight Hmm

I agree Jess Philips comes across as very normal, but may seem not clever enough.

JasonPollack · 15/12/2019 12:37

Membership will never vote for him.

WiseUpJanetWeiss · 15/12/2019 12:43

I’ve just stumbled over BlueLabour on Twitter. Culturally Conservative??
What fresh hell is this?

ColaFreezePop · 15/12/2019 12:46

I’m for Keir he has that no nonsense vibe.

No new Labour leader should have a London or South East seat IMHO due to the fact people from outside London and SE rightly felt that Labour was not listening to them.

It also doesn't matter whether they are a remainer or leaver as that ship has sailed.

MarshaBradyo · 15/12/2019 12:51

Corbyn doesn’t listen to anyone except his blasted cronies so the north are not alone there.

I would consider a more moderate London based candidate who actually reaches out and considers the whole country before dismissing them outright.

Keir would be good at exposing Johnson’s weaknesses.

astralweaks · 15/12/2019 12:51

Baldcrusader

I thought anything inherited was anethema to the Left?

A very good point. Do Labour really want to be in the wilderness for all time?

MitziK · 15/12/2019 12:57

I do think that Keir Starmer would be the logical choice.

Paintedmaypole · 15/12/2019 13:05

I suspect Stephen Kinnock of being a career politician rather than a conviction politician. He pops up opportunisticly when he thinks he can advance himself. He doesn't appeal to me at all. I find Jess Phillips to be incapable of keeping her mouth shut when it would be wise to do so. Keir Starmer and Yvette Cooper I like.

kenandbarbie · 15/12/2019 13:08

I think his main problem is his surname.

This ^^ the reason many people don't like Corbyn is his old style labour persona. So labour would still have that problem.

Tanith · 15/12/2019 13:11

Lisa Nandy sounds as though she’ll stand.

For heaven’s sake not Angela Rayner! She simply doesn’t have the intelligence. Can’t see Jess Phillips as leader, either.

BeardedMum · 15/12/2019 13:23

It’s KS or YC for me.

Totally agree about all the comments about what the Tories can get away with saying and doing. Shocking.
