To want a Christmas game that fufils the following criteria...

Can be played by everyone from age 13 to 86
Can be played while sitting down on the sofa
Can be played by people who aren't board game fans

I'm trying to find something for the 5pm lull in Xmas Day. Ancient and infirm PILS and a 13 year old with the attention span of a gnat. The rest between 17 and 54. About 8 of us.

My favourite is Settlers of Catan for you and your daughter though can you play it with 2?

I bought the 'Yes No' game from Amazon to put in Ds2's stocking. No preparation or difficult rules!

OhMrDarcy · 15/12/2019 10:00

Who Finds it First - a board of 500 things and then you take it in turns to get out 4 tiles from the bag and try and find the matching picture on the board. It is fab - we play it all the time with a range of ages. No rules so easy to learn and you can stop whenever you like. Very competitive!

ineedaholidaynow · 15/12/2019 10:06

Card game like Uno?

Yahtzee? Can pass the box round with the dice in it so don’t have to sit at the table.

Waitrose have lots of stocking filler type card games. One is like Just a Minute and is Christmas themed, so have to speak for a minute about a particular Christmas phrase/word without repetition, deviation, pause. If you fail it passes onto the next person until the minute is up.

Countdown

How broad minded are the oldies? Cards Against Humanity?

There's always Top Trumps?

Trewser · 15/12/2019 10:07

Not broad minded at all, sadly

Colour brain- really good game and very simple

Rockbird · 15/12/2019 10:07

The Minister's Cat. Involves no moving at all!

Trewser · 15/12/2019 10:10

ohmrdarcy that sounds quite good

Linkee? It’s a great game, good fun and really simple to play. I’m not a lover of board games but do love a game of Linkee!

ineedaholidaynow · 15/12/2019 10:19

Charades type games, but the more infirm guests just guess and nominate someone else to do the actions.

Crystal Maze, again the more active people do the activity tasks

Trewser · 15/12/2019 10:25

I'm going to have search for all these on Amazon. Thanks for all your great suggestions!

@BeBraveAndBeKind that is a great game, we played it with friends and we all ached the next day because we laughed so much! Incredibly funny game, amazing how it changes in playing!

BeBraveAndBeKind · 15/12/2019 10:37

So simple as well Jigsaws. It never disappoints and in all the times we've played it, we've only ever finished a round with the correct topic a handful of times but the fun is in the weird and wonderful directions it ends up taking. Smile

Google these ones:

Werewolves - you can print the "cards" online or buy a deck. Each person has a character in the village and everyone tries to work out who is werewolf before they kill off all the innocent villager.

Or charades, everyone can guess

Or card game called, chase the ace. Everyone gets one card (use normal deck of cards), and the idea is to have the highest number (ace is low). Then person to left of dealer decides if they want to keep their card (ie. it's high card, say a Jack) or pass it to next person. If they pass the next person has to swap. Then the next person (who received the swap) decides whether to stick or pass, then the next etc etc. Once it gets back to dealer, they have choice of sticking with their card, or "swapping" with the top card of the deck pile. Then everyone shows cards and lowest card loses a life (you get 3). If two people have same low card, no life is lost. It sounds complicated, but is simple - if someone has low card (A, 2, 3) they pass it along the whole circle. Only other rule is if someone has a King (other than dealer) they have to declare it and they can't be swapped.... so the low card gets stuck with person before the King. Google it for a better explanation!

Linkee would definitely fit the bill, we've played it for several Xmas's and it's gone down well. Colour Brain is also great fun.

al2616 · 15/12/2019 10:53

If you can link your phone/laptop up to the TV then I'm a big fan of Geoguesser. It's (free) online. It gives you a google street view of somewhere and you have to guess where it is. The famous landmarks round is good for the littler ones since they are more recognisable.

Bargebill19 · 15/12/2019 10:55

The left right game- bit like pass the parcel. Google it and the words come up. - one narrates the rest do the actions.

Trewser · 15/12/2019 10:58

Love the idea of Linkee but I'm brilliant at only connect so might have to be question master.

Geogeusser also sounds good

I have got DD the Game of Things which I think/hope will fulfil these criteria.

I think it's one of those where there is a question, everyone writes their answers and you have to work out who said what. Questions are eg things you shouldn't laugh at, things you would do with a million dollars etc etc

Baboutheocelot · 15/12/2019 10:59

Code names is good for groups but you do need to see the board.
Spyfall is very good too. You take it in turn to ask questions to each other about your location. You have to guess which of your group is the spy but you can’t make it too obvious where you are otherwise the spy will guess and win the game. Can be played while sat on the sofa.

ineedaholidaynow · 15/12/2019 11:01

You can get Hidden Room type games, not played them so don't know whether they would be suitable

ghostyslovesheets · 15/12/2019 11:01

Are you there Moriarty? Hours of family fun 🥳😂

CeCeLaine66 · 15/12/2019 11:52
