AIBU to think that it's antisocial to paint your nails on the train?

Currently on a long distance train journey, fairly empty coach. Across from the aisle there's this woman who is painting her nails. I loathe the smell. Now, I realise this is a minor annoyance, and that I can move to another empty seat, but just for the sake of passing the remaining 3 hours on my journey: AIBU to think that personal grooming (nail painting, applying full face of makeup, extensive hair brushing etc.) is best reserved for behind closed doors?

YABU(ish). I have painted my nails on a train before but on a mostly empty carriage, wouldn’t do it if anyone was sat next to/opposite me. Also would wait and use the station loos instead if that was an option. But it’s just an inconvenience to other people and not the end of the world.

I’ve had to endure passengers that have hideous farts or smell like urine. And you just have to deal with it because it’s public.

Saying someone shouldn’t apply makeup is ridiculous though imo! I will do a full face on a 3 hour journey with absolutely zero fucks unless someone sits on the seat next to me/it’s a busy train. Is it not becoming of women to show that process? Coz I promise you most of us couldn’t care less Smile

Also the WORST passengers in the world are drunk middle aged, middle class, white women on a weekend who feel the need to yell and whoop everything Hmm

motmormal · 15/12/2019 15:14

I don't mind as much as it is a "clean" strong smell.

On a flight yesterday and one of the cabin crew had a really strong perfume on, Angel I think, it was giving me a migraine she had so much on. Also they were spraying perfume samples which I've never come across before, partner had to use his inhalers, it was awful. Anything that causes a smell in a confined space should be banned

Actually you really can go 4 hours without eating
Yes I am sure I could though having 4 hours to myself on a train is amazing to me, it happens at least once a year, bloody right I'll have a sandwich, some chocolate and peanuts, I dont push it to cheese and onion crisps but do have a processco to wash it down if it is an evening trip.
You are being condescending. This is not an obesity thread for a change. Grin

Chocolate? Chocolate?!
No wonder you're so fat like everyone else in the modern world. Enjoying a bar of chocolate on the train proves you're a slave to consumerism don't you know WinkGrin

Tbf I never realised that nail varnish set off migraines for people or asthma attacks. I've only painted my nails once on a train (rarely use public transport) but now I know, I won't do it again.

Really?

In my limited experience, we’ve got:

  • Rangers fans on the Glasgow - Edinburgh train. I can say with absolute confidence that Glasgow missed out on £100m investment due to these people. I know because I look after the investment that my European colleagues mandated will never go to Glasgow
  • Chelsea fans on the overland between Shepherds Bush and Chelsea
- England rugby fans on the train between Waterloo and Twickenham

Need I go on?

FreyaMountstuart · 15/12/2019 16:32

My DH is allergic and would have to move to hopefully avoid an asthma attack and potential death - but hey get your nails done in public!

Smelborp · 15/12/2019 16:34

YANBU, this is so rude. It stinks and it’s really antisocial to do something that smells so strong and chemically in a confined space.

AlrightyyThen · 15/12/2019 18:01

Need I go on? No I believe you, Never experienced sports fans on a train but it must be an absolute nightmare!

Vulpine · 15/12/2019 19:50

I prefer to be around people who care a wee bit how their actions affect others, preferably not the 'zero fucks' brigade. Horrible phrase

Ah, thank you Dorisdoughnut!

AftonGlen · 15/12/2019 20:52

I don't find the doing the make up on the train inappropriate or anti-social but I do find the fidgeting about and rummaging about in make up bag or whatever highly irritating. I think when I'm in other people's personal space I like to sit at peace, just out of courtesy really.

9ofpentangles · 16/12/2019 11:27

Fucking mumsnet, what the fuck are people allowed to do on the train?!

Sit down and shut up or get a taxi Xmas Grin
