AIBU to think that it's antisocial to paint your nails on the train?

Currently on a long distance train journey, fairly empty coach. Across from the aisle there's this woman who is painting her nails. I loathe the smell. Now, I realise this is a minor annoyance, and that I can move to another empty seat, but just for the sake of passing the remaining 3 hours on my journey: AIBU to think that personal grooming (nail painting, applying full face of makeup, extensive hair brushing etc.) is best reserved for behind closed doors?

YANBU OP, nail varnish smells horrible. There is no good reason why someone would do that on a train.

MissE6791 · 15/12/2019 08:47

Anyone who applies or removes nail polish on public transport is an anti-social arsehole. I don’t think applying make up is the same but it makes me squeamish in case they stab their eye with a mascara wand when the driver slams on the breaks. It takes me about 3 minutes to do my make up in the morning and I’ve never done it on the train. If I really didn’t have time at home (which has never happened) I’d just do it when I got to work.

Riddo · 15/12/2019 08:52

YANBU. The smell of nail varnish sets off my asthma.

Expo · 15/12/2019 08:53

For gods sake grow up

LolaSmiles · 15/12/2019 09:03

Nail varnish, clipping nails, spraying perfume or deodorant etc shouldn't be don't in public.
Make up I also think is better done with personal grooming at home but I couldn't care less if someone does it on a train as it doesn't affect me.

The difference between eating/drinking on a train and painting nails is that one is socially acceptable and it's reasonable to need a snack/drink when travelling. Nobody needs to paint their nails and groom themselves.

Vulpine · 15/12/2019 09:09

I hate someone putting on make up next to me too. All that gurning and pouting

CourtOfProtection · 15/12/2019 09:27

YANBU op. Good post. Though I disagree with 'I realise this is a minor annoyance'

To the 51% of others who would do this:

  • MAST CELL ACTIVATION SYNDROME (MCAS)
ukmasto.org/about-mcd/mast-cell-activation-syndrome-mcas/

-MULTIPLE CHEMICAL SENSITIVITIES (MCS)

When you realise how very sick you make these people, you might think twice about your selfishness Sad Anaphylaxis anyone?

echt · 15/12/2019 09:33

Having no RTFT, it is not antisocial to paint your nails, it is inappropriate and unsociable.

That's why you don't get ASBOs for public nail painting.

FAIL2PREPARE · 15/12/2019 09:42

Completely agree with you, nail polish stinks. It's also not necessary to paint your nails imo, people need to eat and drink to survive. If you want to paint your nails it should be done on the platform or at the very least in the train toilet to try and confine the smell.

AloneLonelyLoner · 15/12/2019 09:55

@9ofpentangles HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

This reminds me of when I was a kid and on the train with my mum (early 1980s NOT 1880s) and a woman was brushing her hair. My mother was clutching her (own) bosom and exclaiming loudly about the impropriety of brushing one's hair in public. It's private. It's private! Like the woman was giving her (own) lady parts an aggressive fondle. Makes me giggle now and I still can't brush my hair without feeling rude.

emilybrontescorsett · 15/12/2019 09:59

Funny how times change.
My mother finds it completely unacceptable to eat on public transport. Her mother found it common and in a acceptable to smoke in the street.
Thinking about it my mum and all her friends were always slim, they never snacked.
Now I see children and parents eating in public and there is a link to this and obesity.
No need to eat on public transport, even on a long commute.
It's just become a habit for people to do as they please.

emilybrontescorsett · 15/12/2019 10:01

Alone yes I remember my grandma telling me not to brush my hair in public, it was not the done thing!

CountFosco · 15/12/2019 10:19

My mother finds it completely unacceptable to eat on public transport.

My Mum would never let us eat while walking down the street. Never went on public transport with her so no ideas about her views on that (lived in the back of beyond so no public transport).

LolaSmiles · 15/12/2019 10:39

Yes, eating lunch on a 4-6 hour train journey is just a habit to do what I like. 🙄 No need to eat or drink during that time at all. The tea and coffee trolley and the buffet carriage are there for no reason. Grin

I agree with you that there's no need to snack every 5 seconds, but then some people (like me) prefer to eat little and often rather than 3 large meals so I'd happily eat my packed lunch in two sittings. I don't think a difference in eating little and often Vs 3 meals is the hats causing obesity. What's probably more causing obesity are people who need to snack regularly on top of 3 meals and the snacks (and this is promoted from childhood when seemingly some children cant manage to go from lunch at 12 to home at 3:30 without needing to snack on the way home).

emilybrontescorsett · 15/12/2019 10:49

Actually you really can go 4 hours without eating.
Fast food outlets are not there for your wellbeing, they are there to make a profit by encouraging you to eat shit.
Seriously my mum's generation were all very slim, probably a size 6-8 In a dress size today. It's no coincidence that they only are at meal times, never whilst commuting or on the streets. Also you cooked your own food which often stopped you from over eating. That's another thread but even so you aren't legally entitled to a break until you have worked 6 hours so it is totally possible to survive a 5 hour commute and not die from starvation.
You have been taken in my consumerism encouraging you to over eat.

LolaSmiles · 15/12/2019 10:57

Emily
You really do sound condescending.

How on earth can you possibly decide that me choosing to eat little and often, or to eat my packed lunch in two sittings rather than one possibly warrant such ridiculous leaps to fast food and totally stupid claims like this:
You have been taken in my consumerism encouraging you to over eat.
Grin Hmm

Has it ever occurred to you that people might just be capable of managing their own calorie intake, eating according to their preferences and still manage to eat a healthy diet and remain slim?

Or do you routinely equate "eating habits other than 3 meals I approve of" with "gluttons who've been taken in by consumerism guzzling fast food every 5 seconds"?

Olliephaunt4eyes · 15/12/2019 10:59

Strong smelling nail varnish is antisocial. Hair brushing/make up doesn't really affect anyone else so I think is fine.

Smelly food is also antisocial. Probably worse than makeup, I think.

Pfefferkuchen · 15/12/2019 11:09

Actually you really can go 4 hours without eating.

Are you mad? People will die of starvation, literally die if they didn't eat for such a lengthy period of time!

Sadly people have no self-respect and love doing their personal grooming on public transport, wear pjs to go to the supermarket. You can only pity them, they feel like rebellious teenagers when they are just ill-mannered and embarrassing.

BringPizza · 15/12/2019 11:11

Wow, what a bunch of snowflakes some of us are. If you can't cope with make up and someone managing to squeeze their breakfast into their morning rush maybe one should have travelled in the Rolls? Grin

SerenDippitty · 15/12/2019 11:25

I'd rather someone paint their nails than eat, drink or make noise

I’d rather sit opposite someone having a coffee and eating a kitkat than painting their nails or doing their makeup.

Recently DH and I were travelling from London to home. We’d just flown back into Heathrow, no meal on the flight, we’d last eaten at the departing airport and had a 2 hour journey home. We got sandwiches, crisps and wine to have on the train. Don’t think we were being unreasonable.

orangejuicer · 15/12/2019 11:26

If it's basically an empty train and isn't for long then I don't think it matters too much.

Honeybee85 · 15/12/2019 11:28

YANBU

My father is very sensitive to paint smells and also nailpolish smell. He would get nauseous and a massive headache from sharing a train car with someone painting their nails. I’m sure there are more people like him. Very inconsiderate.

burnoutbabe · 15/12/2019 11:30

I have done nails on a train but only when I have a seat to myself or just my partner.
But I would not mind if someone said the smell upset them and I'd then stop.
Most of my polishes have no smell, I did chuck some cheap ones that smelled horrible. So it may be a brand thing. Remover mostly does smell chemically so I'd not do that outside the house.

BringPizza · 15/12/2019 11:31

I have a friend who is incredibly allergic to oranges, and the airborne spray caused by peeling one is enough to have her vomiting for hours. She doesn't expect the world to stop eating oranges.
