Phrases you hate

Which are the phrases you hate in a conversation?

OP posts:
Wynston · 18/12/2019 10:25

I will be there now in a minute.

dayslikethese1 · 18/12/2019 10:48

I agree re "curated" faerie, see also "artisanal" and "bespoke".

I hate it at work when people refer to "drive-bys", meaning problems that come up on the day and need to be dealt with immediately (I think). It just sounds kind of violent and melodramatic Grin

Hingeandbracket · 18/12/2019 11:44

Where has this come from all of a sudden?
The USA like most of this crap. I blame them for over-use of curated too.

Btw may I give a special mention to “misnomer” which is now used incorrectly in 99% of cases?

purpleme12 · 18/12/2019 11:58

It is what it
What is the actual point of the the phrase?!
Of course it is what it is otherwise it would be something else!

StealthPolarBear · 18/12/2019 12:07

I always assumed "you do you" meant do the things that make you happy. But that's part of the reason it irritates me.

RuthW · 18/12/2019 12:11

Can I get
Xmas
Gotten

All drive me mad!

FizzyIce · 18/12/2019 12:13

Hubby, holibobs, crimbo, fur babies , munchkins when talking about kids and when people say
“ who’s pissed on your chips” Only ever seen it on here and it’s fucking awful

VictoriaBun · 18/12/2019 12:18

I hate the phrase that people say when someone dies.
' They had a good innings ' . I want to punch the people that say it.

Blinkyblonkyblimey · 18/12/2019 12:29

Reaching out.
Gifting.
You guys.
My bad.
Just saying.
Pronouncing sixth as ‘sickth’.
It’s down to you.
The present trend of dropping the ‘ly’ off adverbs in adverts. Eg; ‘Live Life Comfortable.’

getyourgrooveback · 18/12/2019 13:20

110%

Just call it 100% and get on with it. GRRRR

rhubarbcrumbles · 18/12/2019 13:37

It's stopped being used now I think but 'sourced', people talk about where the sourced a bit of furniture or whatever.

I got in touch with an old acquaintance a few years back as I had been asked to pass on some important information to them and they asked (via email) 'where did you source me?' no idea now but I wished I hadn't for a moment there!

SoftBlocks · 18/12/2019 13:43

‘Randoms’. Dismissive in a crappy way.
‘Done and dusted.’

Mordred · 18/12/2019 14:26

"Gotten"

Actually I don't mind this. It simply fell out of everyday use in British English while it was preserved in the US.

We still use it in a way, or have you for-gotten?

fairygodbaker · 18/12/2019 14:31

'Everything happens for a reason.'

purpleme12 · 18/12/2019 14:52

Yes I don't like everything happens for a reason

It's like making light of everything and it might be something really bad that's happened

Justgivemesomepeace · 18/12/2019 14:59

My sister says 'in no way shape or form' all the time. Grrrrrr
A colleague uses 'At this present moment in time....' about 10 times a day. Drives me insane.

Ocomeocomeimaginaryfleas · 18/12/2019 15:45

I'm sick of hearing about someone's "truth". His truth, your truth. Reminds me of that "Your map of the world" bollox that used to be trotted out by trainers.

QuickstepQueen · 18/12/2019 15:52

Not being Funny
Get Brexit done

Newkitchen123 · 18/12/2019 15:53

Call someone out.
When did people start saying this because I've only noticed it the last year or so

fairygodbaker · 18/12/2019 16:10

I'm sick of hearing about someone's "truth".

I went for a trial at this yoga studio about a year ago and I still remember being sent an email on 5 ways you can 'find your truth on and off the mat'.

ClinkyMonkey · 18/12/2019 19:53

Oh God, one appeared on my Facebook thread yesterday. Someone was exclaiming about how her 'work family' had remembered her birthday. Work family? Is that a thing?

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/12/2019 21:41

"Kicking the can down the road" ( said loads in all the Election reporting )

StealthPolarBear · 18/12/2019 21:50

Don't forget about your journey
