Genuinely feeling mortified for Jo Swinson

Wow that was kick in the balls if ever I have seen one. Jesus how absolutely humiliating. I was curling up just watching the footage last night, and then the clip about her claims that she will be PM.

Just mortifying on every level.

I hope she is able to leave with a shred of dignity, because I am not sure she is ever going to recover her creditability after last night's carnage. She was seriously out of touch, and she paid the ultimate price.

Her self ID policies can’t have helped, it may be that they cost her the seat it was a very small margin.
She allowed the party to be dictated to by lobby groups- she ended up at odds with ordinary female voters.

FruitcakeOfHate · 13/12/2019 17:23

She is a fascist who voted to penalise the weak and vulnerable in society, regardless of her sex. People saw this and voted accordingly. She deserved to lose her seat.

CatInTheDaytime · 13/12/2019 17:34

I think there was a degree of misogyny in people's reactions to her

I think people reacted to her misogyny. There, corrected it for you.

Surely it can be both. She's a massive misogynist, but doesn't think she is and hasn't done the thinking that would allow her to grasp why. At the same time she's a woman, and I have no doubt she's on the receiving end of misogyny. On top of that there is the massive disappointment of feminists when a women leads a party and then fails to be a feminist - leading to a loss of votes.

I don't think the self-ID thing is at all the only reason this happened. Her Brexit stance was OTT, because however shit Brexit is going to be for most people, people don't like to be overruled like that. Her voting record was awful, and she came across as pre-scripted, unable to think on her feet and not very bright.

I do think its interesting that the self-ID and gender issues were used to trip her up and give her enough rope to hang herself, because up until now it isn't an argument that's been at the forefront of mainstream politics, or much discussed in interviews with leaders. Her bumbling confusion on the topic has probably done a huge amount for the GC argument, just by leading people to start thinking about why it's an issue. And I think it will be the start of the whole GC argument coming more out into the open. So thanks for that Jo - and... joiiiiin ussss. :o

TriangularRatbag · 13/12/2019 17:39

Didn't like the woman. It was down to her that we had a general election at all. Johnson couldn't have done it without her assistance.

AllideasAndNoAction · 13/12/2019 19:04

She is a fascist

Hmm
AllideasAndNoAction · 13/12/2019 19:12

In every single interview or speech, she came across like a gauche teenager participating in youth parliament or a secondary school debate. Embarrassing.

Absolutely. Listening to her always reminded me a bit of this, which makes me cringe myself inside out every time I hear it. up

CrazySpanielLover · 13/12/2019 19:15

It's really cringe that she was banging on about the possibility of being PM and she didn't even win her seat. Her post-humiliation speeches reek of petulance.

kikisparks · 13/12/2019 19:17

Nope. I feel sorry for the people who suffered based on her voting record and her not being my MP any more is one of only 2 good things for me about this election (SNP landslide being the other).

mrsglowglow · 13/12/2019 19:22

Sorry to say she deserves it. So completely out of touch with reality and her awful condescending speeches telling the public what is best for them.

kikisparks · 13/12/2019 19:28

Also I really trust Amy to protect the NHS which saved her life in 2 battles with cancer, Jo had her chance to vote to protect the NHS and abstained. She has only herself to blame.

Self ID and gender were nothing to do with it for me, or for anyone else I know who voted in the constituency. I don’t even know what Amy’s views are on it.

VisionQuest · 13/12/2019 19:57

She's a very unlike able character.

Bumbling and incompetent. Good riddance.

madeyemoodysmum · 13/12/2019 20:05

Yep as another poster said. None of my aquaintance seem to. Be aware of the women Id issue which makes it all the more scary

SandySpain9 · 14/12/2019 11:52

Agree with OP. She lacked maturity bobbing head up and down continually when talking...keep still for a second! She giggled at her own lame glass ceiling joke yesterday. Can only assume nerves...not that she thought it was funny.
But essentially they were foiled by Labours pride in not teaming up an EU voting pact like Boris and Farage brilliantly executed. Look at Kensington votes to see how Remain (ish) vote split...9k lib and 16k labour. Tories won with 16.5k !

avocadoze · 14/12/2019 12:00

I didn’t like her policies on women’s rights, but the gleeful misogyny being doled our by bits of the media and the contempt she is getting here isn’t deserved. She’s mocked for how she dresses, for her teeth, for her boobs. That’s not deserved, whatever her political failings.

ACouchOfOnesOwn · 14/12/2019 12:00

It was the LibDems who refused a Remain pact with Labour and spent more time attacking Labour than they spent attacking the Tories.
Are we already re-writing what happened? People's memories aren't that short.

CatherineOfAragonsPrayerBook · 14/12/2019 12:02

@AllideasAndNoAction

That link was truly eye wincingly, vomitingly cringe. I agree that the similarities in presentation and style are uncanny.

SandySpain9 · 14/12/2019 12:04

Thanks ACouch... didn't realise libdems avoided pact too

Then libdems FULLY deserved their fate!

Did you see how Andrew Neil got her to say sorry 4 times? Pure comedy! Hes a genius interviewer though

Nat6999 · 14/12/2019 12:54

Her voting record is all you need to look at, she voted with the Tories on any welfare benefits or anything to help the less well off. She got what she deserved

IcedPurple · 14/12/2019 13:02

Ah the agony of seeing her face, and when she tried to clap I could have cried for her. I don't like her, but would not wish that one anyone. All on the world stage too.

You're making it sound as though she were the victim of a natural disaster or had been diagnosed with an incurable disease. In fact she is a highly ambitious and arrogant politician who chose to put herself on the 'world stage'. Humiliating defeats are occupational hazards.

mudpiesfortea · 14/12/2019 13:04

Watching the news with DH last night and he said "If she (Jo Swinson) self identifies as an MP, do you think she'll get her seat back?" 😬

SandySpain9 · 14/12/2019 13:08

@mudpiesfortea like it!

That's another thing Swansong missed..humour!

Cheeserton · 14/12/2019 13:12

Funny how the smugness of male MPs gets a much more muted reaction.

No it isn't. She's a party leader who lost her seat while aiming to be PM. Anyone else fit that description? No? Thought not. Nice try.

siring1 · 14/12/2019 13:19

Maybe she should identify as an MP and turn up in Westminster anyway.

OllyBJolly · 14/12/2019 13:24

I think there is some misogyny directed at Jo Swinson and she does get criticised for stuff that would never be aimed at men. However, she wheeled out the "I'm a woman, I'm a feminist" card when it suited her while she was shitting on other women. She didn't lose her seat because of any glass ceilings; she lost it because she led a piss poor campaign.

I find it hard to feel sorry for her. She'll get a decent pension for what has been a relatively short parliamentary career and she'll leverage her term of office to maximise her earnings to way more than she would have got as an MP. She's operating way beyond her talent and capability whilst many far more deserving people suffer under a regime she helped build.

SingingLily · 14/12/2019 13:33

At least Jo Swinson now knows what a woman is -
an adult human female with a vote

I think Lordamighty wins the thread. I'm filching that one, if it's OK with you Grin
