So it's Christmas jumper day at DS school, we don't celebrate Christmas. Muslim household here, don't even have a Christmas jumper. AIBU to just send him in with his uniform? Feel sad that he might stick out like a sore thumb Blush

@MamaWeasel Grin Same! I heard jumper first when I cam e to UK. Still better than what americans call it..."upper".

SnowyChristmasTree · 13/12/2019 10:05

I know that it's too late but yabu. So what if you don't celebrate Christmas?

My dcs school celebrate lots of different religious festivals and it wouldn't even occur to me to stop my child taking part. These events are a lot of fun for children.

Any kind of winter/colourful jumper would be fine you're just being very silly.

Squidsister · 13/12/2019 10:15

Yes ours is school uniform with Christmas jumper in place of normal school jumper. DD1 has a tasteful one with a picture of holly on it, she will wear it other times too.
I think any sort of red / green / glittery / wintery top would be fine. It’s just something to make school more fun and raise money for charity.
It’s not wasteful if they wear the jumpers a few times and then pass them on - in our area there is a thriving trade in Halloween/WBD/Christmas outfits! Grin

FWIW I am not Christian but we celebrate Christmas as I see it as a pagan festival. But I can understand it’s tricky.

Delbelleber · 13/12/2019 10:17

My son wore his and daughter forgot hers, tried to run out the car to go back in and get it and the mean mummy that I am I said no. I'm sure your kid wont be the only one

PollyPelargonium52 · 13/12/2019 10:40

My ds doesn't like jumpers. He went to school today in normal school uniform.

littleducks · 13/12/2019 11:18

@TowelStripes because they wore the fair isle jumper on other occasions in winter (then passed it down) but a xmas jumper when you don't celebrate xmas would definitely not be worn elsewhere.

Lots of mums who do celebrate seem to but jumpers that are only worn once or twice though

anxioussue · 13/12/2019 11:20

We just did a normal jumper and pinned tinsel or streamers on it

Aquilla · 13/12/2019 11:21

Ffs when in Rome. What message are you giving him? A red hoodie, a green sweatshirt or would that be 'offensive'?

Thelnebriati · 13/12/2019 11:27

What does he want to wear?

OP says he went in green jumper and ger son was in reception so she didn't know about this in detail. Just posted here to check whether it was better to wear uniform if not g6o full blown xmas jumper or not.

RainRainGoAwayComeAgain · 13/12/2019 11:41

I don’t understand why you couldn’t just buy a Christmas jumper, unless you can’t afford to? Poor thing being left out. It must be hard being in a class full of children excited about Father Christmas when he won’t be coming to your child.

dementedpixie · 13/12/2019 12:28

Oh ffs, is that a wee guilt trip there?!. I think I've bought 1 Christmas jumper for each of mine in the past but they complained they got too hot in school as they dont normally wear a jumper so it was a waste of money

coconuttelegraph · 13/12/2019 12:42

I can afford a jumper but choose not to buy one as I think they are a waste of money and resources as a lot of them probably end up in landfill.

PlumsGalore · 13/12/2019 12:52

@coconuttelegraph did you only read what you wanted from my post? I said OR bright sweatshirt.

Some people read all the replies, you know. Hmm

converseandjeans · 13/12/2019 12:54

I think you're over thinking the religious side of things. Most UK people are not remotely religious - Christmas jumpers are often with reindeer or just winter pattern. I don't think wearing a jumper in this style is a religious statement at all. It's just a fun mufti day. Christmas Day for most people in the UK is just a time spent with family & excuse to give presents & eat lots. I don't think many people see it as a religious observance.

dementedpixie · 13/12/2019 12:54

@PlumsGalore, @coconuttelegraph wasn't quoting your post. Maybe you should read all the replies! Hmm

Dixiechickonhols · 13/12/2019 13:00

Own clothes. Red/green if you have it. At school music concert last week lots of Muslim children, some wore Festive jumpers eg robin on, some in Santa hats or reindeer antlers. My daughter had a present bow Headband reluctantly on her head as she won’t get an Xmas jumper. Will wear this and white top to Xmas jumper day - snowball?!

Badabingbadabum · 13/12/2019 13:01

Perhaps he's in the same school as dd1 as I forgot all about it and she's merrily gone in with her uniform.

FrostythefeckinSnowman · 13/12/2019 14:14

Mine was asked to wear a Xmas jumper earlier in the week so I sewed a set of battery operated lights onto a black Star Wars sweatshirt.
They’re not raising money for anything, so no donation required. Thankfully, they rarely ask for donations.

Christmas jumpers are pretty naff.

Villanelle1 · 13/12/2019 14:22

Personally I would just send him in a xmas jumper. Most people who wear xmas jumpers arent doing it for religious reasons and a Christmas jumper has nothing to do with Christianity. It's just a bit of fun for the kids and I wouldn't want my kid to stand out for being the only one not wearing one.

dementedpixie · 13/12/2019 15:01

It's a bit late now as the school day is almost over. Ds never wore one today but was in his own clothes. Dd had a long sleeved top with a festive scene on it rather than a jumper

lazylinguist · 13/12/2019 15:11

I don't see how the jumper/sweatshirt confusion is relevant. It's not as if schools are going to care whether it's a jumper or a sweatshirt. "Go straight home and change right now, Emily! That so-called jumper is clearly finely machine-knitted cotton and is therefore a sweatshirt! We don't tolerate that kind of thing here!" Grin

Acheypelvis · 13/12/2019 15:47

Ours had to wear uniform under the jumper and pay £1. No non uniform here

dementedpixie · 13/12/2019 15:50

Ours took in stuff for the food bank rather than give money

Acheypelvis · 13/12/2019 15:51

We are Muslim too btw. To the poster saying poor child father Christmas won't be visiting. We have our own holidays too which involve gifts. We can't do them all! We do take them to see Santa once and then say the parents do gifts at home. But we have our own holidays. My kids realised Santa wasn't real anyway which worked in my favour. They also haven't told their friends santa isnt real. We taught them that like others don't believe what we believe we don't believe in santa but you mustn't say anything to the other children as you would bed sad if someone said what you believe is wrong. And they haven't said a word. Aged 5 and 6. Kids are a lot smarter than you think! And understanding and compassionate.
