So it's Christmas jumper day at DS school, we don't celebrate Christmas. Muslim household here, don't even have a Christmas jumper. AIBU to just send him in with his uniform? Feel sad that he might stick out like a sore thumb Blush

We dont celebrate xmas here either, but we always have wintry jumpers as I love them..I.e with a snowflake on or a fair isle pattern but this year ds wanted one with a reindeer that when you pressed his nose it lit up..fine by me, if he likes it he likes it.

However I do understand what you're saying and I also feel I HAVE to buy things for these stupid days at school.

Weve had yellow day(one of mine owned nothing yellow so felt like I had to go buy a yellow top) , pj day which was ok but our house gets boiling hot so all our pjs are always thin so again bought my youngest some new thick pjs for that. Then we have superhero day and world book day.
It's all costing us too much money so for half of them I refuse to take part then feel so guilty about it.

GlitchStitch · 13/12/2019 08:15

Does he have a wintery jumper? Penguins, snowmen etc? Or a plain one that is red or green?

Catinheat · 13/12/2019 08:16

Oops didnt answer the question...send him in a red or green or just a bright top if you have one, or check if you have anything like that..one year I stuck pom poms on a plain black thick jumper and that worked.

PlumsGalore · 13/12/2019 08:21

Surely he has a winter jumper though? Something bright and cheerful or a bright sweatshirt.

coconuttelegraph · 13/12/2019 08:27

It depends on what the culture of the school is, probably too late now but do you know any parents of older children you could ask?

Not everyone has jumpers @plumsgalore my dc have never had knitwear of any type, they wear sweatshirts, hoodies, zipped tops. People are different you know

WaterSheep · 13/12/2019 08:31

Random question but isn't a sweatshirt just another name for a jumper? A jumper doesn't need to be knitted to be a jumper.

coconuttelegraph · 13/12/2019 08:34

I've only ever used or heard jumper to mean a knitted top. A sweatshirt is something quite different. I haven't checked the dictionary but I'm pretty sure a jumper needs to be knitted

Send him in normal clothes, dont send him in his uniform. Im sure the pupils wont bat an eyelid and the staff will understand why.

TowelStripes · 13/12/2019 08:37

@littleducks
I really dislike the wastedulness of it, so many mums buying cheap jumpers as pretty much single use.
Over years my kids have worn:
A fair isle print jumper again bought big to last more than one year and I just pulled it out the loft for ds2 to wear as 6 year gap between my sons

What's different between doing that with a fair isle jumper and a Christmas jumper? Confused

I guess you learn something new everyday. My family use the term jumper as a catch all for any long sleeve garment.

I'm guess the fair isle jumper was worn throughout the winter rather than the Christmas one worn only a handful of times

Rosere · 13/12/2019 08:43

We aren't Muslim but DS just goes in uniform. He doesn't like dressing up. They wear their uniform with the Christmas jumper though.

partyhatsoff · 13/12/2019 08:46

Put a coloured non-school jumper on him. Our school is having a Xmas jumper if you want, or another jumper, or uniform if you prefer day. All the kids will wear a non-uniform top of some kind I would imagine.
it's just a bit of fun, parents get so up in arms about this kind of thing but kids tend to like wearing something a bit different.
If you're not Christian - Xmas can/is more than just about the Baby jesus ( for starters it's a winter festival nicked off the pagans by the people trying to into christianity to the country) and you can still take part.
Like Some schools celebrate Diwali, Eid etc.

Sh05 · 13/12/2019 08:46

Our school have just done an own clothes day in exchange for a £1 so nobody has to stress about a particular piece of clothing. In the past they've said wear a Christmassy theme so basically anything, even red socks will do.

TowelStripes · 13/12/2019 08:47

What, you only wear your Christmas jumper on Christmas jumper day? You need to think outside the box! The plenty of opportunities to wear it over winter 🤷‍♂️

BrightonBB · 13/12/2019 08:47

Christmas jumper Day at school to me means any ‘winter-ish’ themed top (woollen, sweatshirt or long sleeved t shirt) and doesn’t have to be a Christmas picture so grab a top and run with it.
If in doubt just a red top.
The kids just view it as fun to not have their school top on for a change.

FAQs · 13/12/2019 08:49

My dd went in uniform her choice she is a teen, she doesn’t like to follow the majority though.

myself2020 · 13/12/2019 08:52

We usually have a scandi style or fairisle jumper that we use as christmas jumper (so general winter themed)
out school wear uniform under the jumper though, not mufti

my2bundles · 13/12/2019 08:53

My son has always just worn his own clothes (altho we do celebrate Christmas he just hates Christmas jumpers) .

iklboodolphrednosedreindeer · 13/12/2019 08:53

I think a jumper in some US states is a pinafore dress type thing. Confused me for ages.

Rubyupbeat · 13/12/2019 08:56

His favourite Jumper or sweatshirt?

Allyg1185 · 13/12/2019 08:57

Our school is an xmas jumper/tshirt/decoration day. My work is also xams jumper day. Mine i don't mind so much as I just wear the same one every year. Ds obviously grows so his is a new one every year which is really unnecessary

RedandYellowSunrise · 13/12/2019 09:00

A jumper is a long sleeved top, thicker than a tee shirt to be worn over something else. Def doesn't need to be knitted in my world

Back2Bali · 13/12/2019 09:04

Like others have said send him in, in something bright and colourful he wont be the only one not wearing an xmas jumper... there will be some for reasons like religion, parents forgot, or cant afford them... I send our son in mine or hubby's last two years he is big for his age and was not going out especially to buy one for a stupid day... they'd be far better off just saying it's a no uniform day rather than xmas jumper day
