So it's Christmas jumper day at DS school, we don't celebrate Christmas. Muslim household here, don't even have a Christmas jumper. AIBU to just send him in with his uniform? Feel sad that he might stick out like a sore thumb Blush

Why do people make Christmas Jumper day such an angst fest?? Confused

starfishmummy · 13/12/2019 09:05

I used to decorste an existing jumper for DS. The when he decided that hedidnt want that I bought him a christmas cardigan on the basis that he normally wore (uniform) fleece jackets so a cardi was similar. It was also a lot more forgiving in sizing as he could do it up or leave it flapping. Hes had it about 5 years ....

I always thought a jumper had to be knitted but was soon put straight when my children started school. Everyone but everyone called what I thought were sweatshirts, jumpers.

It really makes things confusing when people make up their own meanings for words, the dictionary definition confirms it means knitted

Well ,I'm worried about child overheating whatever type of jumper is worn .
Can we have a diagram of school layout and journey to school with average temperature readings ?

GiveHerHellFromUs · 13/12/2019 09:14

Why make him look like a spoilsport? Just put him in a brightly coloured jumper, job done.

Isawthathaggis · 13/12/2019 09:22

I think the donation to save the children or UNICEF or whatever the Christmas Jumper day is for is probably more important than the jumper itself.
But to echo all the PP, any non uniform jumper counts.

FlemCandango · 13/12/2019 09:23

I have two children at the same school and dd is wearing her Christmas jumper, while ds refuses all non uniform days and is going in uniform as usual. Both are making the required £1 donation. As long as your child is happy then do what is right for you / your family.

TaliZorahVasNormandy · 13/12/2019 09:24

I sent DD in a sparkly jumper. They said non school uniform if they dont have anyth8ng christmassy.

MamaWeasel · 13/12/2019 09:25

"jumper" is a v strange term, when you think of it, for something that doesn't jump.... The more I think about it, the odder it sounds. misses point of thread

christmasjumperday · 13/12/2019 09:29

He's got a green jumper pheew.. but I forgot the £1 donation Blushwill donate once I pick him up. He's in reception, so all of this is a first for me.

Don't worry about the donation - there's about sixty gazillion things to remember this time of year and you won't be the only one!

FlemCandango · 13/12/2019 09:32

To weigh in on jumper debate - I agree that the dictionary definition has been broadened - but the function of language is communication so if everyone understands what is included when we use the word "jumper" then I don't have an issue.

Dd Christmas "jumper" is a black sweatshirt with a muted design and "Have an awkward Christmas" written on it.

But sweatshirt fabric is knitted.

Wait til Secondary.
In dds new one the rules are as follow.
Christmas jumper with full multi. But this requires a donation via parent pay. List of those that have donated passed to form tutor. If you have not, you can take an item to donate to food bank. If no item you have to be in full school uniform!

Sixgeese · 13/12/2019 09:41

D'S refused to wear a Christmas jumper, he does have one that fits from a couple of years ago. He chose to wear uniform.

gottagetbetter7 · 13/12/2019 09:41

I have worked in 50 odd schools on supply in past decade and in most cases if kids come in in school uniform on these sort of days they are given something else to wear from dress up box so that they don't stand out. They are thankfully usually asked if they want to put something else on but I think I only ever saw one kid say he just wanted his uniform. So in this situation you putting him in a green top is best solution so you are still deciding what he is wearing.

I have a very good friend who is Muslim and she told her children to think of the prophet during any Christian celebrations. I wonder whether the school could also do a celebration of other religions (esp if it is not a church school).

Most things at Christmas nowadays are not really celebrating religion ... all the decorating at this time of the year goes back to preChristian times.

Depending how you feel, maybe you could just send in school uni or another jumper of his choice. I can see it is tricky but maybe just a red jumper could be found that could be worn on other occasions?

NeedAGrip · 13/12/2019 09:48

I never knew there was so much debate over what sort of top a jumper is!

I’ve sent DS1 off to Christmas jumper day at school today wearing a sweatshirt with a Christmassy design.

I hope his school is a bit more flexible about the definition of a jumper than some pp!

Redyoyo · 13/12/2019 09:49

My kids school lets them wear a xmas jumper every day in December with their uniform. My eldest dd doesn't do xmas jumpers so she just wears her normal uniform, youngest dd spends the whole month of December like a Christmas fairy - jumpers, tights and hair accessories!

Well then most t shirts are jumpers then as they are also knitted?!?

dionysus19 · 13/12/2019 10:01

Muslim here too. we too don't celebrate christmas but don't mind taking part in celebrations with the school as they do the same thing for us for Eid. We had a few tops which were bought last year in sale with reindeer on them. I send mine with that on. It's not christmassy but still festive.
