Whiny and ungrateful DS

So DS (6) has been badgering me for some big outdoor xmas decorations as a few houses in our road have really gone to town - think inflatable snowmen and santas riding sleighs and a shit ton of lights. Money is very tight at the moment and these sort of decorations are expensive but I didn't want to disappoint him so I spent all morning adapting some existing outdoor halloween decorations we had in the shed ( a four foot Frankenstein and a four foot witch) and made them into Santa Claus and Mrs Claus by adding red/white clothes and hats and wigs and a beard for Santa. It took me ages especially I was "helped" (hindered) by DD (20 months) but was still pleased with the finished result. Anyway when he came home from school and saw them he started crying and pulling at their clothes and spent an hour lying on the sofa crying saying "I don't like Santa with a nail in his neck" (he means the bolt) and "I don't want Mrs Claus to have a big nose". I am gutted - me and DD spent ages on them and DD loves them and keeps looking at them out of the window and clapping. I think he's tired from his school play last night as he was in bed very late but I don't think I'm being unreasonable to say he's ungrateful after I went to all that trouble. Also I asked my neighbour what she thought and she said her granddaughter (she's about 12) had said they "looked weird" and had sent a picture of them on her phone to her friends. I don't know why I bothered now but at least DD loves them.

6 year olds don’t do empathy. They sound like they do look a bit weird! In my family we’d embrace the weirdness Xmas Grin

He wanted to be like everyone else and adapting Halloween decorations sounds absolutely mental TBH.

If I was walking down your road and saw a four foot Santa Claus with a bolt through his neck it would frighten the fucking life out of me!

Sorry, your DS is right. "No, we don't have anough money for big outdoor decorations this year. How about making some paper chains?" would have been better.

Honestly? They sound horrible and scary. They look good to you but not to him. DD likes them because she is a baby and has no idea what’s going on. You can’t make a monster into a freaky scary santa and expect a 6 yr old to be happy about it! Have some empathy.

I get that you worked hard but no decorations are better than scary freaky santa.

Poor little dude.

Sorry but I think we’re going to need photos to make a proper judgement!

Is this a joke? Your kid and any kid walking past will be terrified to see Santa with a bolt through his neck! I’m not surprised the 12yo next door is photographing it and sending it to her friends to take the piss. It sounds ridiculous and inappropriate.

Sorry, I’m with the others, my mum used to try and do this sort of thing, “we can’t afford a guide uniform so here are some random blue clothes,” but the point is that kids want to fit in and if you can’t afford it that’s fine but don’t try to do something weird instead - unless of course ds is involved and has the sort of self confidence to style it out and make everyone else wish their house was the same.

It does sound like he was embarrassed... sorry. And they do sound a bit ‘weird.’
However, he does sound like he is being a bit ungrateful and you should have just said ‘no’
He needs to realise that.
That being said, hats off for ingenuity.
